Stupid Adware Ruining Life

Okay.  Don't know how it installed itself onto my comp, but every two minutes, four-five popups show up on my comp.  At first it's at ad-w-a-r-e.com (I think) and then it redirects to a popup ad.  I want to freaking get rid of it...any tips on any programs?  I've run Spybot and fixed everything, but that's the only super-reliable program I know of.  This Adware is seriously a pain in the @$$.

I've had the same exact problem.  Funny thing is it happened right after I clicked on a link in the PGC forums from someones thread.  I was then bombarded with pop-ups, among other things.  I got rid of the other cr@p-e-o-lee but the popups were still coming.  Usually it would be about 6 popups simultaneously, as if one was being generated from the prior popup.  Other times when I left my pc idle, I would come back and there would be upto 25 popups up.  So I did a search on google finally and decided to dl a pop up blocker.  The file size for it was only about 500 kb.  Try Panicware.com that's the one I currently have.  It blocks about 90% of the popups I had.  The only thing is with popup blockers I guess is that it takes them a second to block the popup so instead of dealing with popups you manually close that can turn a 30 minute internet session into an hour long one, half the time closing the ads, you now get about a second where the computer stops while it closes the ads.  Also you have to hold down the control key when you actually want something to popup a new page.  Good luck, right now I'm deleting all my files, and am going to reformat soon.  I also use Lavasoft Adaware to get rid of all the spyware that comes too.

Download and use Ad-aware in conjuction with Spybot. Also, get yourself a different browser if you're using IE, preferebly Firefox.

Oh, and stop going to porn sites you dirty, dirty boy.

Definitely get Ad-aware, that's good stuff.  Also get security updates and stuff, so it doesn't happen again.

This happened to me so much, my computer was messed the hell up.  I needed to do a system restore to three weeks previous (luckily, I hadn't installed much during the interval).  If it gets horrible, you may have to try that, but only as a last resort.

Pr0n sites?  Me?  Neeeveeer...

No really, I'm a good boy, but when I ran PowerScan on my computer, it found some 750 porn related links/files, probably having to do with this adware stuff.  And I think I'll try this Ad-aware, my friend recommended it to me as well.

Ad-aware, Spybot, Firefox and
Housecall  Free Virus Scanner and your computer will  be safe from  just about anything, and probably running at least twice as fast as it used too.

Thanks forthe link, Syl I'll check that out later.  I am in dire need of a virus scanner, and a screwed up installation of Norton has prevented me from installing a new Nortan OR McAfee.  I'll see how that works out.

But seriously, spyware is a huge pain-in-the arse.  I've got something in my computer that could be a virus, spyware that Spybot doesn't pick up, a trojan, whatever, and I can't get tid of it.  I know when I used Internet Exploerer I got infected with "Cool Web Search."  You can probably google for a remedy to that, since adware and spybot don't detect it.

But what I have now infects Mozilla Firefox too, evidently.  It cahnges around my favorites all the time.  Sometimes it adds new stuff, sometimes it undoes changes that I've made.....and after it will all magically go back to normal.  Anyone heard of these symptoms?  ;___;

oh, random note: you must open trendmicro in IE, it needs activex at the moment to run, they're working on a firefox version though.
Still, its the most up to date virus scanner i've ever found, and the fact that its free and easily accessible is a wonder.

Everyone seems to be pimping out free virus scanners, but why doesn't anyone mention scanners that cost money?

I've been using VET Antivirus for the last couple of years - sure, it costs money for virus updates, but the program is OUTSTANDING! The best part of it is that it stops infected e-mail and/or attachments before I even see them, with a nice friendly popup message. It works with most e-mail programs thunderbird luuurve k and is backed by Computer Associates and their anti-virus fighting stuff. FIVE STARS!

side note: VET was an Australian project until they got consume'd by CA ;________;

Ah, so its a website. That's why its free. Fair enough.
I'm happy with my antivirus program - it does the job without needing my prompting to go to a website, or download a new update, or even telling it to scan. It just does it automatically.

And don't talk to me about Norton - that was what I had before switching to VET.

When using firefox how do you get the windows media player plugin installed.  I looked on their site but found nothing.

I'm not really sure about that, windows media plug in runs on about half of the firefox installations i have, either way, i prefer to save things to my desktop and watch them that way, but, i can see how that would be an inconvenience.

Well everything has it's downside. As does FireFox. But just knowing how much more secure you are using it makes it all worthwhile for me.

I used to have that problem but now I have like 7 different portections for it.

Norton Anti-Virus seems to catch them occasionally.

Windows XP update.

SpyGuard
Spyware Blaster

Those two just acts as shields.

Spybot
Ad-Aware

Scans and gets rid of it.

SBC Yahoo DSL pop-up blocker.  It doesn't block every pop-up but with some protection I only get like pop-ups on some sites like only once unless I leave the site and come back again.

Why do I have so many?

Well Spybot, Ad-Aware, SpyGuard, and Spyware Blaster I found were recommened on some helpful yahoo article and I'm really thankful I have these 4 dudes.

The others are obvious with the pop-up blocker just being there so why not?

These days adware and virii are so close together... My sister caught a virus and at first I thought she got infected with advertising. Adware should be officially considered virii so we can sue the living daylight out of those bastards who produce it.
