Honestly, I don't think a bunch of sequels to hardcore games people didn't play in the previous generation is going to make the new console appealing. It should launch with a new IP.

I just don't think Metroid was the type of game with a fresh enough visual style to get people excited.

Um, what? Fresh visual styles tend to lower sales, not raise them.

Can I see some evidence? A fresh excellent visual style is an advertising campaign in itself, the first 30 seconds of video footage is everything. It gets people talking.

Also, there have been a lot of Metroid games recently so it might have been a pie sliced to many times.

But Other M is a completely different game, it's barely related to those Metroid games! The reason it sold worse is that it's marketed as a Metroid game and yet is a significantly worse Metroid game than the rest. Maybe it's a good non-Metroid game but that's not what it was marketed as.

I disagree, I think we have been given too many Metroid games lately. Though I do really like Other M. My only comment on advertising is 1. there probably wasn't enough of it and 2. did other M get more advertising than games that sold less?

I mean compare it to the attention DKCR and Kirby are getting...

DKCR is going to be a genuine big seller, Kirby is not. Kirby gets attention for its visuals but I can guarantee that's not going to translate into high sales. Besides, the media gave a lot more attention to Other M when that came out than Kirby now, mostly because of the controversy and extremely split opinions. I'm pretty sure having angry people complain about the game isn't going to help its sales.

The consumer reaction to the quality was strong but it wasn't strongly positive.

I agree that negative consumer reaction destroys sales, I'm confident that that could be a major factor in Metroid's sales. Could it be stemmed from the initial complains about the NES control style?

Free MMOs are a bad idea. Because that would mean you pay money to progress like the games on facebook.

ahahhahahahahahhahhaahahahhaa

No. Free to play MMOs are some of the biggest up and coming games right now. There are some excellent ones like Vindictus and Battlefield.

They just have to be smart about how they make their money back. Some companies do it just on customization of character or increased inventory size, etc. It works good.

I'm going to be working with a DS devkit for about 14 weeks. So if you have any interesting questions for me to ask and find out about I'll see what I can.

One interesting thing I know about the DS is that it has no FPU (Floating Point Unit). Which means basically it has no hardware level understanding of decimal point numbers, such as 1.5. It only understand the 1. However, there are software ways around this.

Anyway, just thought ya'll would like to know.  Later I should be working on the Wii. Can't wait to try to figure out how TEV works and how hard it is to work with :P

When I played the PAX build, it was better than the Goldeneye build I played by a long margin. We'll see after it comes out though.

Ha well I don't know. Because I like Sports Champions depth of game play better than WSR's variety, I'm not sure. Honestly, I'm going to say yeah because the pointer controls on Wii are so much less delayed. Its so close though that it doesn't really matter.

The move is a nice piece of hardware.
I actually edited out that list before I submitted. It looked like this originally
WiiM+ >= Move >> Kinect

I guess that would be more accurate? But are we talking about the usability of the hardware or the user experience with the software?
I haven't used either Move or Kinect, but I have been very vocal about how Move seems like the best overall tech out of the 3 since it sorta runs a middle ground between the 2. It's not perfect, but it's a step in the right direction.

If the Wiimote 2.0 could just put a PSeye/Kinect like camera in the sensor bar and then some IR lights in the remote itself(around the top+
bottom edges), it would be one upping Sony at copy Nintendo's own ideas by copying Sony's but doing it even better.

But this is a Kinect thread so....

Yes that is an accurate representation.

So we own all 3 setups now.

WiiM+, Move, Kinect.
Initial impressions of Kinect with Kinect Sports is that there is a lot of noticeable delay, quality of play decreases with 2 player, it is not accurate enough to do quality throws in the Javelin and Discus events. In Table Tennis the game is no damn forgiving you'll never miss a shot. Navigating is slow and annoying, which is why they made Table Tennis so forgiving, cause its the same gameplay basically.

I'm probably gonna say this:
WiiM+ has the best pointer controls as long it doesn't go off screen.
Move  has the deepest sports game, which I like.
Kinect is even more casual than Wii at this point (due to accuracy) with this library. Maybe those hybrid games will help, but I doubt it.

When it comes down to Move vs WiiM+, unsure, the quality of the motion controls seems about the same. Offscreen pointer feedback is better on the Move, its just that the delay is bad on Move.

Dammit! I was banking on this game being good and having fun controls!

69
I see.

70
Which is exactly why I said there will not be a 3DS HD. Maybe the system after that will be HD, but I think that it won't batter with the 3DS since I think they will still be able to make the games look great.

I have a hard time believing any developer is gonna volunteering render in 1280x720 when they only need to render some tiny widescreen res. What would HDeee really do here on such a small screen?

71
Exactly, publishers bitched at Microsoft for making them release every game at 720p or higher (720p is considered HD) for years until they finally agreed to drop that requirement. If Nintendo tried that you would hear the same complaining.

WOT? The 3DS is absolutely, 100%, never EVER going to be able to output 720p.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Dead Space Extraction
« on: October 25, 2010, 01:54:59 PM »
My biggest problem with Extraction is that by the end of the game there isn't anything that can come close to touching you outside of the last boss battle.  You have an unlimited supply of Stasis, and all you have to do is Stasis + gunfire for every enemy in the game.  It leads to a spectacularly lame final level where all you do is fight off wave after wave of Necromorphs, and all you do is Stasis + gunfire them all.  It's not hard, it's not exciting, and it's pretty much not fun.

Hmm yeah if you played the game that way that would be retarded. I basically never used stasis, so it wasn't a problem for me. But I can see that being one @_@

General Gaming / Re: Sony's Motion in the Blue Ocean

My house has a Move, the pointer controls are fine but just a bit delayed. Don't navigate the Playstation Menu with the controller its to hard, but it is pointerless. Sports Champions is their casual title, and something I like a lot better about it is that each sport has a lot more depth then it's Wii equivalent.

As far as quality of motion controls, I'd say its as good as WM+ but not much if any better.

Do they really have more depth, though?  I mean, does Disc Golf have anything more to offer than what's on Wii Sports Resort?  While the gladiator mode has a shield, does it have the parrying ability that the WSR mode offers, to give patient players an advantage?  Even though there's more and varying archery targets in  archery, does it match the tactile feel and true, not cheap, difficulty of the WSR version?  Does Table Tennis even work on the Move?  I suppose I can't criticize everyone's favorite game: Bocce Ball.  You got me there.  Of course, WSR has golf. And bowling.  A competitive Disc Golf mode with targets and such. Also, basketball and more.  They might appear shallow, but they have a certain depth to them that I didn't experience or observe whenever I've dealt with Sports Champion's offerings.

Gladiator offers a shield, different fighting styles from AI, actual tactics, a powered-up attack, a usable versus mode, jump attacks, ring outs, rolling get ups, and other additional moves.

I know WSR offers tons of sports, but I would have appreciated some real good depth in a few of them.

Sounds like ya'll didn't finish the game. I'd likely agree if I had played only the first 2 hours, but the second half is all action and awesome weapons.

75
If by had do you mean 720p+ output? Your crazy and its not happening.
