Might as well keep the drive to 75 going by getting Mafia 72 underway. With the cancellation of Silenced from hosting and no takers at this point, I've decided to go ahead and undertake hosting this game.
Despite the title, this actually won't be based on Super Mario RPG. I just liked the riff on the title. I was just going to call it Mafia RPG but decided to throw in the Super for fun.
This is probably going to be one of the most subversive types of Mafia games we've played yet in that it is really going to stretch just what a Mafia game is. For this game, my thinking is that everyone will be given an HP count and that votes act as an attack on that HP count. In addition, there will be other abilities (and possibly items) that players will be given or acquire that allow them to use further attacks against other players to decimate the HP of a player. At the same time, there will also be defensive powers and items. What this means, though, is that we could possible have some days where no is eliminated because they still have HP left and some days where a lot of players are if they are low on HP so I guess we'll see how that plays out.
Another element I'm toying with is the idea of having parties. So, there would be the Townie Hero who could start recruiting other players to his party to increase attacking power against other players and the Mafia Villain who could do the same. I may even include a possible wildcard third player who could do this also but I'm still working out scenarios for this game. Again, it sort of changes the base game of Mafia with the Mafia forming and organizing at the same time as the Townie Party. I may end up just having the Mafia party fully formed but I want to make sure things are balanced and both forming at the same time strikes me as more balanced. There will be more details on this as game time approaches.
As for the game itself, feel free to role-play as any RPG game character you wish. We'll make it a mish-mash of games. The Smash Bros. of RPG's as worlds collide. If you have some ideas of what might be neat for an RPG Mafia game, mention it below and I'll see if I can incorporate them. I'm hoping we can see a good turnout again.
EDIT:
Well, I've been going over this game for awhile and I just don't think it is going to work, at least, not in the way I envisioned. Having hit points, items and abilities was something we could have pulled off back in Mafias 20 - 50 but these days, I think inactivity might be a factor. Moreover, there is a lot that can go wrong i.e. make it unbalanced to the Mafia's favor over the townies. I envisioned a game in which players could gain wealth from their votes which they could use to buy items to allow themselves to replenish HP or gain a special attack. At the same time, the further in the game players advanced, they could level up and get better stats and attacks. I even thought of throwing in abilities to successfully restore a player back into the game if they were voted out. I wanted to have the Mafia all know each other and work together from the start allowing for them to team up and unleash powerful attacks much like facing a boss in an RPG in which the boss and some minions would all take their turn attacking your party and then it would be your parties turn to return fire. This would be the night and day actions except the Mafia can also vote in the day. At the same time, I wanted the townies to be able to form their own party slowly with the hero being able to swap in different members and allow them to counterattack. But the whole thing gets very complicated in trying to figure out what on how to keep things balanced. As players level up, what else has to increase or decrease to keep things fair for both sides? If you don't have levelling up, what happens when the mafia loses a couple members? How can you ensure they still have a chance of success if their attack power is weakened early in the game? If the townie hero is eliminated early on, do I need to establish a hero chain much like the mafia has a godfather successor in order to allow the townie party to keep forming and progressing to counter a powerful mafia team? How should wealth be established and divided? What should items be priced at that is achievable yet also not going to let their abilities overpower the game?
The story itself would be that of the local poor boy trying to help the amnesiac girl with the magical crystal he just met help save the realm and banish the mad usurper and his minions by locating the forgotten oracle under a giant tree along with his friends. It would just be a lot of jokes about RPG tropes and play along with that. Yet, while I think it could be fun, it doesn't incite passion in me like another theme I've been thinking about this past week and am going to do instead.
On Monday, I came across a topic on Star Trek and started reading the comments following it and it reminded me of the time I spent watching various Star Trek series. I realized that we've never done a Star Trek game although we've done two Star Wars games in Mafia. I think it is time to rectify that. As such, I'm going with a simpler game instead and running with a Star Trek theme.
While the setting will take place in The Next Generation universe, feel free to roleplay as any Star Trek character you wish from any series or movie. The only exception would be Q which I am claiming as host.
I will post all the roles later tonight for this game.
