Nintendo Gaming / RE:Bloody Zelda?

Yeah but I doubt they included nude men.

In all honesty, they wanted to. Particularly on the monsters. Jaffe wanted to be kind of like a zoo, where there's no magic anatomy shield, you see it right there as it's attacking you (he talks about it in the "Character Graveyard" bonus feature). You weren't particularly supposed to enjoy it, but it was just one more aspect trying to make it seem like a mature, honest adventure, not something glossed over. (Sony ultimately made him cut the male nudity, but not the female.)

Oh, and if you can't look past an M rating to enjoy God of War's gameplay, you're far shallower than someone buying it just for the nudity. I know this is an N board, but God of War is an enjoyable game. Saying it's crap just because the content is rated accurately makes things questionable when Geist stumbles in, which, last I checked, is also destined for an M rating, complete with "Partial Nudity."

TalkBack / RE:Namco Announces Sigma Star Saga for GBA
« on: January 20, 2005, 09:44:11 AM »
Hm, shots are up... wow... the character sprites for the RPG portions are huge compared to the shooter sequences...

It does sound like an awkward mix, but I'm still interested. WayForward's an excellent developer that can really do things to push a system. Of course, now that the DS is out, we don't _need_ the GBA pushed, but you get my point. :/

kirby_killer_dedede: Exactly. Sega acquired Sammy? Bull. It was a hostile takeover by Sammy, Sega had originally rejected their merger proposal. (They talked afterward with Namco, and then just decided to stick it out on their own, but Sammy went after them anyway.)

TalkBack / RE: Editorial: Free NOA!
« on: January 13, 2005, 04:51:43 PM »
It's good to read a dedicated editorial promoting this idea. I had heard that Reggie's decision-making limits were far out of the NCL norm, hence the jokes about a "Reggie-lution" were actually potentially true when it comes to how Nintendo's marketed in the US. It's always painful to read about the GCN demo disc situation, how everyone but NCL is yelling at the latter to allow them, and NCL refuses to because... because... apparently they don't like helping product sales.

At any rate, I believe the DS was sort of an experiment, a field test for Nintendo. The way the console was designed (Built-in WiFi? For a company that swears online gaming is still far away?), the way it's been marketed... But unfortunately, if NCL is stubborn enough, even the best results could be "not good enough" and they use it as an excuse to not repeat those development and empowerment decisions.

TalkBack / RE:EA To Create Arena Football League Game
« on: January 11, 2005, 12:55:26 AM »
This just in: EA has purchased the rights to kids throwing around a football in their yards.

"EA is excited to exclusively bring this latest simulation to a market eager for it, and we look forward to our upcoming agreements sealing other play areas, such as playgrounds and parks, as well as reaching an agreement with the all-important father-son 'toss around the pigskin' right holders."

EA is currently prepping a lawsuit against a comic strip named "Peanuts," which depicts attempts to kick a football regularly.

IGN just recently posted updated impressions from CES. It's very arcade-y in terms of design, at least that's the impression one gets. Half of the game consists of Baby Mario falling like in the demo, the other half involves Yoshi walking at a forced rate across the ground. The game is set up to have multiple difficulty levels, and even if you die, you can apparently still continue on to the later levels.

Some kind of multiplayer will supposedly be included, as well.

TalkBack / RE: Nintendo and Konami Announce DDR with Mario
« on: January 06, 2005, 11:12:36 PM »
It's a neat idea... but I wish Nintendo had organized it with a different license instead. A very similar polymodel already looked awkward in NBA Street, now we've got to watch it try to dance? That's just going to look bad. :/ But the minigames look decent, at least.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:cheap gba games?
« on: January 06, 2005, 06:50:14 AM »
Hm... keep an eye on sites like Byte Size Deals and CAG for good GBA game sales (not to mention other consoles)... off the top of my head? Sabre Wulf is usually around $10-$15, and quite good... Sonic Advance 2... Can't think of many right now which I know the price for...

Oh, this week Minish Cap for the GBA will be about $22 at Circuit City, surely you can spend two dollars above your limit to pick up such a popular game for so cheap. ;P

Huzzah! I remember being treated as if I was mad for pointing out the news and clues that it was supposed to happen, like I was someone suggesting a Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat in the early 90's. It's nice that he answered about it, instead of avoiding the question any longer.

And about "leaving a door open for the future" (approximate quote, there), could that be an implication about a Revolution SSB having Sega characters? Things might've changed with Sammy taking the lead, though, since this interview was obviously done some time ago.

Because those ideas are stupid...It makes more sense to put him in a "all-franchise" game as Melee than in a Mario game...What they are waiting for is nothing more than the next Smash Brothers...

But didn't Miyamoto himself make a comment, half-joking (but only half?) about Sonic potentially appearing in Double Dash? (I'm glad he didn't, Double Dash was such a weak effort- er, whoops, don't want to invite that flame war :/ ) Is the idea so stupid when even Miyamoto suggested it once? (I'm not saying it isn't, I just know some people defend Miyamoto's opinions to the end, I'm just curious if this would lead to contradiction for some.)

TalkBack / RE: Nintendo Touts 2005 Software Lineups
« on: January 06, 2005, 06:21:55 AM »
Right, I think it's listing First Quarter 2005 titles only.

I've heard that a Mod Chip has been recently created for the GCN, that allows it to play Mini-DVDs. It might be possible for you to use that and burn the homemade software to a Mini-DVD, and base it off that. Although maybe the software has to be designed to play like that, I don't know, yet.

I know Mod Chip talk is frowned upon here, but I'm just pointing it out since it relates to playing homebrewn games.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Mortal Kombat Deception coming to cube!
« on: December 23, 2004, 04:43:15 PM »
But in exchange, I don't think the Online functionality will be included... (Why take it out? Just to avoid testing costs? I mean, don't PS2 and GCN online function virtually the same way? There's no Xbox Live specifics or standards, the game just talks to the modem any way it wants...)

I thought the initial estimates for how many characters added were much higher than that (didn't some publication or quote say as high as seven?), but that sounds like a more realistic number, really.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:The hell? (Players Choice Oddities)
« on: December 23, 2004, 04:16:50 PM »
But that'd be difficult for consumers (and retailers) to spot. Plus, that "Only For" is not always there, it's only there for games that are technically GCN exclusives, so that balance is lost if it's not an exclusive.

I like the idea of a classy gold banner, though. Not a gaudy yellow, but a muted gold color.

Every experience I've had with Nintendo's Customer Service has been good. They're generally very intelligent, and very honest. Even via e-mail, the responses aren't just canned trite, but actualy feel like personalized responses to your specific question(s). They're really a rarity anymore.

TalkBack / RE:Mario Appears in NBA Street V3
« on: December 15, 2004, 01:17:06 AM »
Restricting it to just Mario characters doesn't make as much sense to me, though. A group of All-Stars that's just a bit more "street" (and I mean that in a vague sense), like say Mario, Link, Samus (sans most of her armor, probably? It'd be fun to see the lady under the battle plating still doing what she does best), and Fox McCloud, might fare better.

I mean, I like Peach, but if that corner logo is depicting some or all of the Mario characters included, I don't think she'll be a very popular pick, particularly for a game like this. Heck, Miyamoto hates the idea of Peach not being a damsel in distress anyway (I really don't think he liked what HAL did with her in Melee), I'm surprised it's OK for her to rough it up in a game of football, unless she's just going to watch from the sidelines and wave stupidly or something. (Not putting down Peach, but the way Nintendo insists she be depicted lately, like she's on a permanent dose of Valium.)

TalkBack / RE: Baten Kaitos and Xenosaga on the DS
« on: December 01, 2004, 06:43:11 PM »
What if this is like ZoE or Silent Hill for the GBA, though? Not really the same gameplay style at all. It's nice to imagine the DS will exclusively get a Xenogears saga in line with the PS2 titles, but that does seem like a better fit for the PSP, doesn't it?

But I probably shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. Thank you, indeed, Namco.

TalkBack / RE: Independent and Objective Ratings System Initiated
« on: November 30, 2004, 03:54:27 PM »
I think the ESRB does a fine job, personally. I remember some really poorly thought-out game ratings in the early 90's in reaction to Mortal Kombat (Sega's own was horrid... a 13+ rating for Mega Man: Wily Wars because he flinched when he was hit, that's why it never got a US release, and the equivalent of an M for Switch because there's a joke where the kid grows boobs as one of the bad endings later on, we're talking stick-figure quality anatomy), but most of the ESRB ratings I've not had a problem with. It's just an issue of parents failing to read the warnings, and then later blaming the companies for whatever issue they ran into.

Thanks to them, we have to tap the screen each time we start the DS to pass a Health and Safety warning. -_-;

TalkBack / RE:The Treehouse Interview
« on: November 30, 2004, 06:22:27 AM »
Excellent interview, I found it informative, and it's good to know that they're trying to work with what they reasonably can in terms of translation (instead of just cleansing/rewrites), and they seem to enjoy what they do.

I'm fairly sure the Hunters demo is a seperate DS Game Card, not built into the system.

There is the free RAM for the downloadables (1-card multiplayer, et cetera), but that goes away once the system is fully powered off.

Just as a bit of an update, I saw Capcom's airing a new Mega Man commercial promoting several of their upcoming titles, one of which was MMAC for the GBA, so I don't think they'll be delaying it too much longer...

TalkBack / RE:The Big Contest: Nintendo DS Launch!
« on: November 16, 2004, 04:55:54 PM »
I know people are going to say otherwise, but I couldn't get a thing done on that server, and I'm sure it wasn't my connection. I know the popularity is what caused it to lag to high heaven, but it doesn't make for an appealing contest when it takes several minutes just to get into the channel, and when I do, the lag is so bad.

I tried multiple mirrors with the same result.

I'm happy the contest was so popular for PGC, but I really don't think the IRC backbone was strong enough for what you organized and offered. A contest I was supposed to be excited about I feel quite put off by now, and I don't think it's anyone's fault in particular, except the response was really underestimated, and, at least in my observation, that caused some serious negative side effects to this.

Congratulations to the winner, whoever he or she may be, as well as whoever wins the books during the half-time sequence. I apologize for sounding like such a wet blanket, the technical problems (which I'm sure I'll get two or three replies to saying that they experienced no problems and that it must've been my fault) just made for a very disappointing experience.

Ironically, that's the problem. Sony and Microsoft are actively farming out early PS3 and Xbox 2 development kits and showing off the capabilities to 3rd parties. Nintendo's playing secretive again and thus most third parties have only the vaguest idea of what it might potentially be able to do. Logically, they're going to start (in some cases, already have) developing games for the consoles with the clearest frameworks already present, even if Nintendo shows them the dev kits _later_, they'll already be headlong into PS3 and Xbox 2 dev, and the most Rev fans can hope for is quick and potentially shoddy ports.

After hearing this news, GC has not lost a game, so it still has what it had before that announcement so this should not make you more or less happy or content with GC's lineup than before.

They lost the console selling power an exclusive title can provide. Imagine if Halo had received a GCN release in addition to being on the Xbox, with all the same capabilities, and maybe more (built-in online play, let's say, since that's a possibility for RE4 PS2). Halo wasn't an instant console seller, it was a word-of-mouth title that generated fans more and more as they got their friends to play it. Now, eight months after the Xbox release (this was back when the console wars this gen were still somewhat of a tossup between GCN and Xbox), this great game they've been hearing about has a brand new GCN release with these extra added features and a few new levels. Well, let your friend have the old Xbox release, but you're going to get the brand new one. This saves you from getting your own Xbox anyway to play the title regularly, because you already owned a GCN.

Oops. While Halo as game might still be a huge hit, Halo 2 suddenly isn't something Microsoft can rely on to exclusively sell consoles for their side. In fact, if the GCN version had sold well, we'd see a simultaneous release for both consoles. Suddenly there's not as much of a clear-cut advantage unless Bungie illogically built in some major flaws to one version or the other. (They don't want to bother with Microsoft's proprietary online service, so only the GCN version has online play, or the GCN version's audio is heavily compressed from the smaller disc format.)

What's funny is this anecdote reminds me of something Capcom tried, the Viewtiful Joe PS2 port, with the added Dante playability, and now VJ2 coming to PS2 and GCN simultaneously. The only part that doesn't work is that I heard the PS2 VJ port's sales weren't that fantastic.

Anyway, RE4 wouldn't have generated THIS much buzz, but it was a heavily-wanted game in Japan, and had Nintendo and Capcom advertised it well and it still remained exclusive, it might've really pushed some GCNs off the shelves. But now the news will get around that the PS2 is getting a port, possibly with more features (and gamers love their extra features), so for PS2-only owners, why bother buying a new console for the game when you can just wait and get it a little later with more added?
