I'm so pumped that there is (what appears to be) a deeper stats-based armour and weapon system in this Zelda. Judging by how big the first area looked in-game and how it was only a tiny fraction on the world map by comparison, the world in this game looks like it's really going to be gigantic. Having a lot of different armour and weapons to find (and possibly craft with different materials you obtain during exploration and combat) that actually make a difference in combat and Link's aesthetic is a good way to make exploration feel worthwhile. They'll need to do more than that, for sure, but that's a really, really good first step for me. I've wanted them to start adding these RPG elements for a while now. It feels like the next logical step for the series to take.

I just hope this game isn't becoming too complicated. I've always liked that Zelda has been a straight-forward, focused adventure game.

Both versions will release at the same time. So NX will be out by the time you play this.

I'm with you on this. The dopamine treadmill trend in games with all the RPGified stuff is a bigger and bigger turn off for me every year. Looks like link now has armor stats with status effects, much more crafting, a food system, and gear degradation.

The game still looks incredible, though, so I will maintain optimism that Nintendo will implement these factors in a rewarding and non-loot grindy way. The steps toward this in Skyward Sword were mostly fine.

Poking around general focus forums, like half the posts are talking about how this game looks like dogshit, looks like a Wii game, kills all hype, etc. This hobby is so often disgusting!

If I had to describe it, it looks like Zelda: Western Pioneer/Native American. It makes me think of how Aonuma commented that this Zelda would be like western food which we took as a statement of what the gameplay would be like with the game being an open world style. However, that western food comment appears to also apply to the theme and atmosphere of the game with the North American Frontiersman vibe I got from it.

Really? I'm getting a strong western China/India vibe.

Im extremely happy with what has been shown so far. Its pretty much everything I have been wanting them to do.
Its nice to hear there is some voice work in the game, but its hard to know how much is voiced yet.

The game is definitely based on the xenoblade engine, it looks very similar.

I could see that with the ruined temples/stone structures in the winter mountain zone showed but what stood out to me was Link sneaking up and mounting a horse like Native Americans. Chopping a tree down with an Axe in a boreal looking forest, the wildlife of deer, elk and eagles, the burning of the field with fire, Link's weapons. It was the first impression I got. It's still a mixture of other Zelda elements and I was thinking of Twilight Princess even when Link starting running on a bridge over a canyon. But the Frontier type elements just stood out to me and seemed like the standout flavor in my mind.

I'm surprised you see it differently. You and I are usually on the same page about everything. It's weird that we would disagree about anything.

Not sure how I feel about weapon degradation and food.  Those are the sorts of unfun stuff that Zelda rip-offs tend to incorporate in a failed attempt to come across as deep.  Crafting and gear and stuff like that is awesome and will be a cool addition to Zelda.  But I really don't like it when my weapons get weak from use in games.  Like that just adds an extra chore to the gameplay, as opposed to adding to it.  Not that I won't give this a chance of course!  At the very least this looks like some new ground for the series instead of just a slight twist on the LttP or OoT formulas.

Finally watched the trailer.  Yeah, I'm buying this game. :)  Though I notice some weird inconsistency with the visuals.  Most of the time it looks great but some shots are pretty pixelated.  It might just be the sort of cel-shaded style.

While the game looks great, I realize it looks great more by Zelda standards as opposed to just general gaming standards.  Nintendo has kept Zelda rather small during this push for open-world games so it looks more caught up to date than groundbreaking.  It reminds me a lot of Xenoblade, which is a great thing, but that's not mindblowing simply because it's been done.  Zelda as a follower instead of a leader is kind of lame but the game itself still looks like a must-play.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA No female Link. Oh I love it.

I do have an issue with little to no NPCs. Because let's just take the barren, boring lands of Skyward Sword and make them more barren. Some of the decisions overall have me hesistant. Zelda might have needed a new direction. It did not need this direction, but we'll see.

Edit: Looking at the trailer....I am hesitant, but this game looks to have some shining moments of brilliance.

According to Nintendo the E3 demo represents 1% of the world (though it seems like they might have gone beyond that in some of the Treehouse stuff), so I wouldn't take this as an accurate representation of how many NPC characters there are in the game. They said they wanted to avoid story and spoilers at the beginning of the presentation, which I'm sure has something to do with it as well.

Edit: I'm a little behind in the stream, but Bill Trinen said that they specifically don't want to go into story or character details that may spoil the game at E3. There are towns in the game and you will encounter other people when you go into the larger world.

I like the the de-emphasis of NPCs. It really gives me the impression of the original LOZ, which had a very limited role for NPCs. This really does look like both a throw back to the original Zelda as well and a modernization of the series in an open-world direction.

Also, those new Link amiibo are gorgeous. I had hoped for an archer and horse riding Link in amiibo form and we got both! The only thing that would make it better is to combine them to have horseback riding archer Link as one figure. Also, the Guardian figure looks like it will be the largest amiibo to date. I hope they continue to branch out with amiibo in both size and scope.

Bill confirmed that there are towns on the plateau but they were taken out for the E3 demo. Speaking of which..

What we know from the Treehouse gameplay:

- Weapons break
- Armor (I bet the green tunic will be a legendary, endgame, piece of equipment)
- No hearts to pick up. Healing is done via food.
- You can mark enemies and see their health
- Items are pick ups just like Weapons, e.g. enemies that use bows drop them for you to use (until they break or you discard them to make space)
- Some weapons have special abilities e.g. spiked bows have melee attacks
- Fire and bomb arrows are simple pick ups (ammo)
- You have to dress up according to weather. Without a coat in cold weather you will take damage. Although you can also eat spicy food.
- You can use your shield as a snowboard and transfer from gliding to snowboarding on the fly
- Infinite bombs, but they have a cooldown
- You can climb EVERYTHING as long as you have enough Stamina
- Stealth system. There also seems to be an insta-kill. Might be useful for more powerful enemies.
- More aggressive enemy AI in groups
- Some enemies need to gear up first when they see you (e.g. they are resting and don't have their weapons at hand) so you could steal those first to leave them unarmed
- Cooking and possibly crafting down the line
- Physics based puzzles
- Wind has an effect, whether it's shooting an arrow or starting a brush fire.
- The shiek pad has many abilities that you get from shrines.

- Amiibos summon helpers. The Wolf Link amiibo summons an AI Wolf-Link companion that will hunt and fight enemies for you.
-Rafting. You can get on boats and even use the deku leaf (that you find randomly at trees) to boost the sail.

That is sort of funny. I guess that disproves the Emily Rogers rumours? Not sure what the current scorecard is on that.

I agree with you on concerns of the world being barren. One other thing that stood out to me was how solitary the world seemed to be. Compared to XCX where you can pretty much always seem some wildlife or NPC's, it seemed to have a lot of clips of just Link and scenery. Yet, it may not be a bad thing. Sometimes that can add to the atmosphere and narrative but it is a fine line.

Also remember that the game still has a lot of development time left. They may add more items and creatures to the world later on. They confirmed that they did remove some material from the E3 demo.

Oh yeah. I realize there is a lot of game world yet to be shown so I'm not making any final judgment on this game anytime soon. It's why I didn't say anything about the lack of roaming creatures before. It seemed like the trailer wanted to give that particular expression of a lost or wild Hyrule. Plus, it's clear there's a bunch of these guardian stone-type creatures around the landscapes that can spring to life so what might look barren may just be sleeping/hidden. It was just something that struck me when I watched the trailer.

If there are plenty of towns and NPCs, then I have no worries for this game, for now at least.

I just thought about it, this game has more meaningful stat-based gameplay then Skyrim!
