Topic: Forbidden words message

Whenever you type in a "bad word" like the f-word you recieve a message saying that you can't post that word.  Fair enough except when you go back to edit your message you can't repost it.  You get a "can't send duplicate post" message so you then have to copy your text, go back, and reply again.  Is there any way to fix it so you can post the edited message without having to "trick" the program into doing a duplicate post?

Yeah, that seriously bothers me too.  I am used to it simply removing the words that it doesn't like you using, rather than having you have to jump through 3 hoops to post your crap.  At least I am becoming very familiar with what words I am and am not allowed to use.

Yeah, I was getting annoyed before at how it works too, but you know they have to do that for obvious reasons.  I just wished that they fixed that so we could post our message without doing three extra steps....

A nice feature would be where if you put a word like, uh, the one starting with 'f' and ending with 'k', it automatically censors when you post so it shows up as f***.

The point is to get rid of bad language completely, not "cover it up" so the little kids won't get it. Everyone knows what "f***" means. That's a horrible idea.

Don't use freaking bad words. Jeez. You scum. You should be ashamed of yourselves You shouldn't have tried to use those words in the first place. You deserve to have to copy the post and refresh and paste

The thing is that for many people, profanity is an integral part of their speech and language.  Personally I think it's a vital tool for expressing an extreme position on something.  I just think that a better way of keeping the children free of profanity can be used.

And while I use profanity a lot, it's almost always in a comical sense. People who cuss all the time kind of annoy me because it shows they're not creative enough to come up with a good insult. Sometimes I'll let a word or two slip if I'm pissed off at a game or something, but like I said, I usually use it to get a laugh.

I have as much of a potty mouth as any one.  Ask the staff.    Still, in a forum where you can "self-edit", there's little to no reason for it, and just shows how little thought you put into what you're saying.

The thing is that I have been swearing freely since I first learned to talk.  Censorship was never really a big deal with my parents.  (and personally, I agree with that philosophy, and if I am ever dumb enough to have kids, they will be raised the same way.)  To me, I don't really discern the difference between profanity and standard english, although in formal settings I will generally not use the more profane language.

I do have a deep seated hatred of higher society and their customs though.  (Blame my sister for that.  She tries to be one, and annoys me incessantly with her attitude).  I prefer a more laid back "vulgar" attitude.

And no, the censor isn't causing me much mental anguish, but it's just a pain in the ass when you let one slip, and have to go through 3 steps just to fix your problem.  The complaint isn't with the censor (like most, I see the reason for it).  It's with the pile of extra work that results for one little slipup, rather than being able to follow the instructions on screen, or having the word edited for you to a series of ****s, or simply deleted (as in some forums)

I agree that curse words are nothing more than words- they just don't hold the same bearing among me and my friends that they do among a lot of other people. I still think it shows you're uncreative if you use profanity ALL the time, though. I don't mind people saying it, but people who do nothing but cuss seem like batckwater hicks to me. It seems a lot of kids cuss because it makes them look cool and the words just stick with them. I used to be vehemently opposed to cursing (even suck and crap I didn't like). I've done a complete 180 since then, but as a result I don't use curse words in every sentence. It's not a higher society thing- I don't think any less of you because you cuss a lot- but honestly it makes you look very uncreative if you describe everyone as an @$$hole or a sh!thead, etc.

Speaking of the word blocker, apparently ass is fine by itself, but not @$$hole- odd.

I think that your view of cuss words is a little narrow.  Using them adds a little bit of color to your speech I think.  If someone used the words "go", "nice", "went", "good", or similar general purpose words, it indicates a similar lack of vocabulary (imagination), but from what I gather, you wouldn't consider it to be as bad as if the same cuss word was used repetitively.  

The thing is that cuss words often have several different forms and meanings based on context, and that makes them powerful words.  They can be strung together in many creative ways to produce one long line of profanity, which takes quite a bit of thinking on the fly.  Using them in the right places can also enhance the structure of what you are trying to say.  For instance, you might be trying to insult someone.

"You suck at the internet!"

Might be a simple insult thrown at someone.  It becomes a little bit more powerful when a cuss is added:

"You suck at the internet ass-grabber!"

Just a simple (but very lame ) example of what I mean.

Dang, am I the only person you doesn't use bad words around here? I don't personally care about them and don't find them offensive (they are more laughable if you ask me), it's just I didn't grow up using them and I don't see the point...I never even say "damn" or "hell" (as in what the hell)....

Actually, I disagree. I find that people who use cuss words are unimaginative and immature, unable to use more sophisticated and impressive ways of expression their anger, or whatever it is that they feel the need to express. Also, the simple fact that most cuss words are so silly and make no sense (I'm an ***hole? Um, OK, if you say so...) gives people the impression that you are of low intelligent and an inferior being At least, that's the impression it gives me.

Do you see me ever at a real loss in writing ability?  I assure you that in spoken and in un-censored speech, I include a fair amount of profanity in my writing.  I just really don't see how it could possibly hurt the overall writing quality.  Have you ever read a Stephen King book for example?  The guy is a genius in writing, and his writing would lose a great deal of effect if there were no profanity.

just spell it differently and move on. Its just that it was being over-used, mis-used, re-used and abused and everyone got tired of that.

Kiddi works, we know what you're saying, and I would naturally read it exactly the same.
same with gey, sh!t, etc., etc.. Just get creative and work around the word filter, we've all been doing it for years.
