Revolution Name Announced!
« on: April 27, 2006, 07:24:37 AM »
The real name for Nintendo's next console is...

The new name for the console tentatively named Revolution is "Wii". Pronounced "we", the name was chosen for being easily memorised, pronounceable by people all around the world, and not needing abbreviation.

The mysterious Nintendo statement and logo are below. Expect to find out more as E3 creeps ever closer.

Wii

 Introducing … Wii.

As in “we."

While the code-name “Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we," which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive “ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.

Because, it’s really not about you or me.

It’s about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything.

Well it could be worse... but I was really hoping they would stick with the "Revolution" code name. It just had a certian ring to it and made it clear that Nintendo was intent on changing the face of gaming.

On the plus side, maybe this new name indicates an increased focus on community interaction in gaming?

Yay!  A name lots of people will hate so I can say I like it and feel counterculture and superior!

Seriously, though.  I see the cleverness.  It takes a little too much effort to explain the cleverness, though.  Marketingwise, a simple "cool" name is probably easier to work with.  This is nothing like what I expected.

This is possibly the stupidest Nintendo decision in their history. It's almost like they decided that the DS was having too much success for comfort and they wanted to stay carefully behind Sony in marketshare.

Ugh. Revolution was infinitely better. I'll just hope that massive fan outrage in English-speaking countries convinces them to change their minds before they start producing the system.

My first thought was World War II. Not a good first impression.

It looks like it's pronounced "Why" and that is my feeling exactly.

Revolution was perfect for what they wanted to accomplish with the system.

So Nintendo is using it's consoles as some kind of tax sink hole now? That would make sense.

Nintendo Wii.

I still think it's a joke! I checked Nintendo's site and voila: http://revolution.nintendo.com/ . Now, why would they call it Wii and their site still be called revolution.

I even got to see a vid of Wii but now it's not even loading. I don't mind the name btw, I actually find it quite funny and quirky good.

Well, if they plan on selling 1 billion systems, and making this system a household term around the globe, then this will be effective, however it could be it's own barrier in reaching that success. Unless there's something really huge shown at E3 that makes everyone have to have a Rev... er... Wii, regardless, then everything will be fine. However, the public perception in English speaking markets is going to be an uphill battle, just when we thought everything was going right.

This new name makes "Revolution" seem too uptight and serious. I like the style of the new name, the simplicity and the fact it's not generic, but not the name they chose to fit that.

Wii...............

If the new Pikmin is called Pikmin Thwii, it'll be all worth it

OK, maybe this is looking to far into it but it says
" Introducing … Wii.

As in “we."

While the code-name “Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. "

Now, that may not mean that they are going to change the name of the console....it could be something else. Even on their website all it says is revolution has a new name...does that mean that the name is changed or that Wii is a new revolution....of course then I read it more and it says "wii as a name and a console" and get bummed out again. But the fact that on their website it still says revolution just gives me too much hope...maybe I should just wait til E3...sigh.

Also, it could also read like "W-2" or "W-i-i".

This is just massively confusing. Esp. American nongamers, who is allegedly the target market for this.

Stupid thing reminds me of the "Knights of Ni."

Wii is definitely the new name of the console.  It's not some marketing double-talk to mean the name of the Virtual Console service or the controller or anything like that.  Revolution is now called Wii.
