Sony expects to ship over 100 million PlayStation 3 (PS3) game consoles globally this year, according to Tetsuhiko Yasuda, Sony Computer Entertainment Asia’s corporate executive managing director and senior vice president of Asia. He also said Sony may work with Microsoft in the future.

It's all over for Nintendo now.

edit: i got beat to the 360 remark!

honestly though, How the frig do they expect people to believe this? Unless they start producing finalized units RIGHT NOW, they'd never produce that many this year

If they make them as reliable as the PS2, it shouldn't be difficult!

Geese, you all act like Nintendo can actually do something right.

Nintendo is going to ship one.  Period.

Everyone go to your local Wal*Mart at midnight and see if your store was the lucky one.

They edited the article and removed the "this year" part.  The article says they sold approximately that number of the PlayStation and PS2 so basically Sony's expecting things to be the same this time around.  It's still arrogant, though.

And why do they want to work with Microsoft anyway?  I did hear of some PSP-Xbox 360 connectivity...

I'd think you'd be more likely to see 360-DS connectivity since Microsoft claims not to see Nintendo as a threat.

You might actually be able to do something cool with the DS version of MechAssault and a 360 version.

Like substitute the DS for the $280 controller?

On the subject, Sony can do this: they said SHIP 100 million PS3s, not SELL.

If I win the lottery I might have enough to buy a ps3. They should change it to 100mil and 1.

If it really costs around $900 to make, and they probably won't charge more than $500 for them, they're losing $400 on each one.

If manufacturing costs don't go down by the time they sell that many, assuming they can sell that many to begin with, then they lose:
$400 x 100 million = $40,000,000,000.

40 billion dollars lost.  Sheesh.  If they made all their own games, and reaped a full $50 from each one...:
$40,000,000,000 / $50 = 800,000,000.

That means eight games per PS3 sold, just to break even.  But they don't make all their own games, so I don't think they can reap a full $50 from each game, and even if they somehow could, selling 800 million isn't easy.  Games have enough trouble breaking a million...who can make 800 "million-sellers"?  Or 1600 "half-million-sellers"?

Talk about ridiculous.  I suppose if they did sell many, manufacturing costs would go down over time, but still.

JonLeung: I'd say the assumption that 900$ is nonsense is much more likely than Sony taking such a huge loss.

Okay, let's say they lose $100 on each console.  It's still a lot, and I don't see how they expect to profit.

They make profit by laying off thousands more workers worldwide.  They never seem to cut back on products/technology, yet I often hear about job losses.

They've lost around $100 on each PS1 and PS2 at launch and still eventually profitted after a year or so... I think it was 18 months for PS2. Something like that.

if i remember correctly and i believe i do (but i could be wrong) they only recently started making money on ps2 like less than a yr ago, maybe even less than 6 months. 2005 is kind of hazy for me.
