NWR Mafia Games / Mafia XLIX: Mafia Party II, Turn 3, Chilly Waters
« on: March 30, 2011, 01:22:39 AM »
Things are really starting to heat up now, as the party goes into full swing. The group are currently in the middle of their next game, Snowball Rollers, where they are trying to knock each other off the summit with snowballs. This match really counts, as the loser is out of the competition for good.

After the count down, Yoshi furiously builds a snowball. After increasing it to a satisfied size, he pushes it toward Mario, who is building one of his own. Hearing the snowball rolling towards him, Mario instinctively jumps, just in time to clear the snowball. When he lands, he quickly pushes his own snowball back at Yoshi, who grabs it with his tongue and gulps it down. As he pats his belly, he hears a cackling, and turns to look in the sound's direction to see a snowball speeding at him. Quick on his feet, he dodges the snowball just before impact. "Cheater!" Waluigi exclaims, stomping his foot.

Little did anyone realize, Tatanga was quietly building a huge snowball near the edge of the summit, ignored by All of Mario and company. Once satisfied with its size, he aimed the snowball at an unsuspecting contestant, Optimus Prime, powered up his thrusters, and gave it a big push. It rolled across the summit, growing ever larger, and rocketed toward the robot. Just before it reached him, Luigi jumped to dodge a snowball, which landed him in the path of the big snowball, and he became encased in it. It kept speeding and plowed through Optimus Prime, and knocked both of them off the ledge.

"That's game!" Tumble said. "It looks like we have a tie! But I know how to settle it." Everyone peered over the edge to see the two lying dazed in a big splat of snow. Tumble picked three numbers for each person, then folded his limbs inside himself, making himself a full six-sided die, then rolled down the summit. It landed on a six, a number assigned to Luigi. Tumble then popped his limbs back out and declared that Luigi, AKA Maxi the townie, has lost the round (AKA voted).

Hearing this news, Luigi grew mad, madder than ever before. His face turned redder than a boiling lobster, steam spouted from his ears, then in a puff of smoke, he transformed into a Bob-omb. He rushed at Vudu with blindly speed, screaming furiously about how his snowball caused him to jump into the big one, thereby causing his loss. Before Vudu could react, the Bob-omb exploded on him, leaving nothing but a smoking crater behind. Vudu the townie was exploded by Maxi's Bob-omb.

Bowser's disguised cronies watch the insanity with their mouths dropped, and are so bewildered that they forgot to make a move.

Results
Maxi lost the vote tie and was voted out, he was a townie.
Vudu was exploded by Maxi's bomb from being the first to vote him, he was a townie.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia XLIX: Mafia Party II Bad Luck Thread
« on: March 29, 2011, 01:41:25 AM »
Oy. There could be a number of reasons you ended up here. Always landed on red spaces. Just couldn't get enough coins for that last star. Lost everything on Chance Time during the final turn. Got targeted by one of Bowser's cronies. Bottom line is, you lost the game, and may even be dead.

Please refrain from making comments regarding living player roles and strategies.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia XLIX: Mafia Party II, Turn 2, Western Land
« on: March 29, 2011, 01:31:00 AM »
Mario and his friends were nearing the completion of their first round of games. "The loser of this next game will be out of the competition." Princess Peach announced.

The game? Hot Bob-omb! The group tossed around the bomb until it exploded on one of them. Yoshi started with the bomb, and nervously waited a few seconds before tossing it to Mario. He calmly held it up and flaunted it in front of the others, then casually passed it to Donkey Kong, who held it in one hand and pounded his chest with his fists. The fuse was now almost down to the detonator as he passed it to Shy Guy, who began to sweat profusely staring at the bomb in his hands. By the time he passed it on, his robe was dripping wet. The bomb ended on poor Luigi, the fuse no longer visible. He knew the time would be up by the time he could pass it on, so he closed his eyes and quivered. After a few seconds, he realized nothing happened, and opened his eyes to discover that the bomb was no longer in his hands. Someone had snatched it and placed it in the hands of Dasmos, the townie, and the bomb exploded before he could react. Dasmos has been eliminated from the Superstar competition! (AKA voted out)

During the game, Wario decided to sneak off from the group. "There's got to be some hidden treasure around here somewhere." Wario said softly to himself. "You can't be royal and have a castle, and not have a treasure room! And Wario's a gonna find it!" As he walked down one of the castle's many large halls, he checked each door as he passed them. Dozens and dozens of rooms he searched, but found nothing. Ever determined, he continued, until at last, he opens a door to find a huge pile of golden coins!

"Wah hah haaaaaaaaah!" Wario cackled in delight. "Jackpot!" He immediately ran up and dove into the coins, tossing them into the air and raining them down overhead. After swimming a few laps through the coins, he stopped for a breather. He heard a snap sound echo through the room, and looked up just in time to see a large jewel-filed treasure chest fall on him. Even he was no match for its weight, and was crushed. Wario, AKA Silenced the townie, has clearly become a victim of Bowser's goons!

Dasmos was voted out. He was a townie.
Silenced was hit by the Mafia. He was a townie.

Rules

Fast Facts:
-Game starts Monday, March 28th. Days end at 12AM (midnight) EST, player actions are due in by 12:30AM, and the new day starts as soon as all actions are processed.
-There are no special roles, there are only basic Mafia and Townies.
-There is no Godfather; one Mafia member is randomly selected each day to perform the hit.
-Each day, every player will receive one ability to be used that day.
-All actions happen overnight and are not time-sensitive.
-There will be a minigame available each day. The explanation for it will be in the second post of every thread.
-Role PMs will be sent to every player.
-All random actions are decided by the roll of a die.
-In the event of a voter tie, it will also be determined by the role of a die.

Game Rules and Roles and Rolls

General
This game has no special roles, not even the Godfather. Instead, every ability is granted randomly each day, determined by a role of the die. This gives each and every player a chance to use a special power, but also adds an element of unpredictability. You never know who will end up with what, so anything can happen!

All actions happen overnight. An action can be sent in at any time during the day, and must be received before thirty minutes after the daily thread closes. Actions are not time-sensitive; some take priority over others. If an ability is not used by the end of the day, it does not carry over to the next day.

The Townies
There are no townie roles. Every ability which is usually associated with a townie role is now a random ability which will be assigned to each player every day, that will change every day.

Townie rolls
1: Red Space
The player's vote for that day will not be counted in the tally. They may still cast a vote in the thread, it will just not count.
2: Ballot Box Space
The player can change the vote of another player.
3: Protection Space
The player will be protected from the nightly hit.
4: Investigator Space
The player may investigate another player and learn their role.
5: Blue Space
The player's vote for that day will count as two votes.
6: Bob-omb Space
The player transforms into a bomb! If they are hit that night, then the Mafia member who performed the hit will lose along with the player. If the bomb player is voted out, the player who cast the first vote against the bomb player will be taken out as well.

The Mafia
The number of Mafia members will depend on the number of people who sign up. If we get the typical number of signups as we have these past few games, then there will probably be 4 Mafia.

There is no Godfather role. Instead, one member of the Mafia will be randomly selected each day to perform the nightly hit. All members will be informed who currently has this ability. If the member with the power is voted out that day, the hit will be stopped.

Mafia rolls:
1 or 4: Feign Innocence Space
If this player is investigated on this day, they will come back as a townie.
2 or 5: Nullify Space
The player can choose another player to nullify their ability, causing whatever it may be to be ineffective. This ability can be used on another Mafia member too.
3 or 6: Starman Space -or- 3: Red Space, 6: Blue Space
These numbers are situational. If the player with the hit power gets this, it will guarantee the nightly hit will be successful, regardless of any protection the target may have. Also grants protection from being exploded by a bomb player. If a player doesn't have the hit, they will receive the effects of the coloured space corresponding to the number rolled.

Minigame and Reward
Each day, there will be a minigame which all players can participate in. What kind of minigame will appear? Nobody knows! It will appear in the second post of every daily thread. The player(s) who win a minigame will be rewarded with one free roll, to be used at any time. This item allows the player to receive a different roll for the current day. Although there is no limit to the number of free rolls a player can collect, only one can be used in a single day.

PM Dump
To keep things fair, here are the PMs that were sent to townies.

One peaceful afternoon, Mario and his friends began to argue over who was the real Superstar of the Mushroom Kingdom.

“I'm the Superstar!” Mario declared. “I'm famous, everyone knows who I am!”

“I'm the Superstar!” Peach claimed. “There's no one fairer in the land.”

“No, Yoshi the Superstar!” Yoshi contested. “Yoshi adorable, everyone loves Yoshi!”

“You guys crazy?” Wario belted. “I'm the Superstar! I'm super strong because all I eat is garlic!”

Donkey Kong grunted and pounded his chest, showing his strength.

“You're all wrong! I'm the Superstar!” Tatanga yelled. Everyone turned their heads and stared at Tatanga with a puzzled expression, then continued with their argument, ignoring the interruption.

“I'm the Superstar!” Toad proclaimed. “I'm always helping Mario out my giving him items and hints, I'm totally the unsung hero here!”

Shy Guy just stood there, watching everyone make their claims. He wanted to speak up, but he just couldn't find the courage.

“Enough, everyone!” Peach exclaimed. “I know how to settle this! I'll throw a huge party at the castle, with lots of games! Whoever can win the most will be officially made Superstar of the Mushroom Kingdom! You're all invited, so let's get started!”

Little did the group know, hidden in a nearby bush was Goomba, who happened to overhear the loud conversation. After returning to Bowser's Castle and informing the Koopa King of the event, Bowser paced about in his throne room, grumbling.

“I'm the real Superstar of this world,” Bowser growled, “not any of those chumps! How dare they throw a party without inviting me? Afraid of a little competition I guess. Well, I'll teach those impertinent fools a lesson!”

A little while later, back at the castle, Mario and company had just started their first minigame when Toadsworth came stumbling into the room.

“P-p-princess!” the old Toad gasped, “Y-y-you are... in... danger! Bowser's cronies... are... disguised... amongst... us...” After his last word, he collapsed onto the floor, revealing his cane driven into his back.

“Bowser is here?” Peach yelped.

“Don't worry Princess,” Mario said, “my bro and I will keep a lookout for suspicious behavior. We'll figure out who here is one of Bowser's fiends, right, Luigi?”

“Why me?” Luigi asked. “ I thought you were the Superstar! You do it!”

“Okay,” Mario said, “I'll just count on my pal, Yoshi!”

“Y-Y-Yoshi no Superstar!” Yoshi cried in fear, then scurried up a nearby curtain and hid.

“Um... Donkey Kong?” Mario asked.

Donkey Kong grunted and pounded his chest.

“...Maybe not.”

“I'll help you.” Tatanga said, but Mario ignored him.

“Guys, don't make me rely on Wario....”

“Wah hah haaaah!” Wario cackled. ”Don't even try it, loser! I'm the Superstar, you do the grunt work!”

Can Mario talk sense into his friends and discover the hidden identities of his enemies? Or will Bowser crash the party?

Game Rules and Roles and Rolls

The Story

Who is the real Superstar of the Mushroom Kingdom? Is it Mario, with his fame? Is it Yoshi, with his cuteness? Is it Donkey Kong, with his strength? Is it Wario, with his wit? Is it Luigi, with his, uh... hat? After a heated argument breaks out amongst Mario and his friends, Peach decides to host a grand party filled with fun and games at the castle to determine who has the qualities of a real Superstar. Catching word of this event, Bowser paces back and forth, plotting a way to ruin this party, since he was not invited. Will the good times roll at the castle, or will Bowser and his cronies crash the party?

Nintendo Gaming / The Conduit Game Night, November 17th, 7PM EST
« on: November 01, 2010, 10:16:19 PM »
With a host of new shooters to release soon, why don't we have one final game night with The Conduit? I'm sure that once The Conduit 2 comes out along with the others, I'm not going to touch the game again, and I doubt I'm the only one. This way, we'll give it a grand send off before it becomes another trophy on our shelves, shoved into a box, buried in the bargain bin at the game store it was sold off to, or whatever other horrible thing you plan to do with your copy.

The time is Wednesday, November 17th at 7pm EST.

A few people from the forum in Maxi's signature will be joining us as well, including the host, Joie, with me as the backup host. If Joie can't make it or has to quit early, I will take over hosting. Our two codes are the only ones that you need to add.

Nintendo Gaming / Vertical console placement: Does it affect durability?
« on: August 03, 2010, 08:24:46 PM »
This is something I've always wondered about. When the Wii or any other disc-based system is set up in a vertical position, does it put more strain on the disc spinner? Or does it not make a difference? I've always figured that being vertical would cause the drive to wear out faster, because it has to work against gravity. But some say that the momentum of the side of the disc spinning down would even out the extra effort needed for the other side to spin up, so it would make no difference.

Have there ever been any tests on this?

They were reenacting Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for the younger children, and Bob happened to have been playing Willy Wonka, himself. He was a dashing Willy Wonka, with his purple suit, cane, and top-hat! Anyway, his big line came up, right before he was about to yell at Charlie and his Grandpa for drinking the Fizzy-Lifting Drinks...
And, oh my stars, if his face didn't turn a bright shade of red! He stood up on the stage, as red as a cherry, standing frozen, stiff as a board! Then all of a sudden, there was a bit of a wet spot in his pants! Next thing you know, a little girl in the audience started shouting "He peed!  He peed!"
And little Bob ran off the stage crying!

Nintendo Gaming / Problem with Nunchuk connector
« on: March 27, 2010, 01:54:08 PM »
All right, so I'm having a weird little problem with one of my Wii Remotes. Sometimes, when a Nunchuk is connected, it will register as if it became unplugged. This is pretty annoying, because most games have a little message which pops up when the Nunchuk becomes unplugged, and the ones that don't usually have weird things happen with the analogue stick movement. Usually all it takes to get it to register again is a little wiggle of the plug. This happens with any Nunchuk, and only with the one Wiimote, so the problem must be with the Wiimote.

Has something like this happened to anyone else? Is there anything which can be done about it? I'm guessing there isn't, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Nintendo Gaming / What makes a sequel?
« on: January 22, 2010, 08:37:01 PM »
There has been an awful lot of talk about New Super Mario Brothers Wii lately, split in equal parts of praising it for its fun gameplay and chastising it for its decidedly lack of effort in its presentation. All of it has left me with one simple question: What makes a good sequel? Does it need to offer up an innovative gameplay feature to be worthwhile? Is being "more of the same" acceptable when the game was great to begin with?

The answer, at least to me, resides with the game to which the sequel is based. With the aforementioned New Super Mario Brothers Wii, which is a direct sequel to the DS game New Super Mario Brothers and a distant sequel to 2D Mario games of old, it uses an established formula for greatness. New Super Mario Brothers on DS was a good game, though the level designs were a bit uninspired. The fundamentals were there however, and there was nothing lacking or broken about it from a technical perspective. With the groundwork already done, this means the focus of New Super Mario Brothers Wii is on its level designs, making it a well-designed game based on its own merits. I'm perfectly content receiving "more of the same" when that same is greatness.

There are other games which were good for a start, but have some issues that should be ironed out; these are the games which need to bring changes to the table. Boom Blox comes to mind. Although its sequel, Boom Blox Bash Party, scraps the shooting stages which suffered from inaccurate control, it does little to correct its main problem of unpredictable physics. Quite a few stages eventually result with performing the same action over and over until the desired result is achieved. There were a few things added to the game such as new types of blocks, but without improvements to the gameplay itself, it wasn't something I was willing to purchase until it hit the bargain bin.

Here is a nice article which looks at the best Wii games of 2009 which unfortunately didn't make an impact on sales charts, and it is presented without much negativity or hostility toward Wii which seems to be an increasingly rare thing these days.

The stigma surrounding Dead Space Extraction is kind of a shame, as it sounds like it is a good game in its own right. I'm not personally very interested in that type of game, but I might check it out if I find it on sale or something.

Little King's Story was one of the best games released this year. It would seem most people have passed on it due to its overly "kiddie" presentation, which personally I love the style of the game but can understand why it is a turn-off. Plus, such a style belies the relatively complex game found underneath the bright and cheery surface.

ExciteBots may be my pick for overlooked game on Wii, period. Once again I think its style is what turned people away, as racing transforming animals and insects is just too goofy for most. Sadly I'll bet it would have met better sales if it were titled Excite Truck 2.

To be fair, We Cheer has gotten some decent reviews. It would seem it delivers what it promises, so I can think of worse examples of games that shouldn't sell but do. Game Party comes to mind...

:o and  at Sexy Poker. Even worse than its existence is that people downloaded it.

There are other games listed there that are on my to-buy list as well.

Nintendo Gaming / One-third of Wii owners are female?
« on: November 26, 2009, 02:59:57 AM »
Am I seeing this right? According to THIS article, Nintendo stakes claim to 80% of female console gamers, which would be 9 million:

http://kotaku.com/5411707/nintendo-boasts-9-million-player-advantage-among-female-console-gamers

Well, it appears there are just under 27 million Wii systems sold in North America, which would mean that one-third of them are female. Can I get that pink Wii now?

Nintendo Gaming / Which NES game should I get?
« on: October 27, 2009, 07:41:30 PM »
People who paid for the Internet Channel recently received their credits for an NES game, and I'm having trouble deciding what I should get. I've been considering these and would like some opinions on them:

Bubble Bobble
I've heard it's a good arcade game but I'm not sure. How difficult is it?

Adventures of Lolo 2
I like the first one and also Toki Tori on WiiWare which is similar; is this one just as good?

River City Ransom
Heard it was a side-scrolling fighter with RPG elements, but also that it is much harder without a co-op partner.

How long do I have to redeem the game? Because I was also thinking of waiting to see if anything I want gets released soon.

Nintendo Gaming / Unofficial Wi-Fi Night - Mario Kart Wii Autumn Tour

8/10 Update:

I will open a room at 8:45PM Eastern and will start at 9:00 or 9:05. I won't be watching the room however, as I'll be at my computer checking to make sure everyone sees that it is open. Once the races start, I will not be at my computer because it is in a different room, so I can't check anything on the Internet. You can still join if you are late, I'll show a track reminder before we start each GP so you'll know which one we are on. I hope to see you all there!

Original post:

Hi all!
I'm hosting a friendly get-together in Mario Kart Wii to try out some hopefully fun ideas for GPs that I've had. Anyone who is interested is welcome to sign up and join the fun.

Please vote for the day on which you'd prefer to play. You can select as many days as you are available. Please post in this thread the times you'll be available on the days you selected, so that we can agree upon a time.

Now, first, I must list the rules. I don't expect any such problems from any of you of course, but I must cover this anyway due to legal reasons.

-No hacking
-No exploitation of glitches such as those found on Grumble Volcano, Mushroom Gorge, etc.
-No playing like a big meanieface. This means no driving backwards, camping on an item box, specifically targeting a certain player, or other such behavior.
-No excessive complaining about item "rape". It happens to all of us.

And now, here are the five GPs we will play! Please write down the information for each one so that you do not forget it. Before each GP I will list the track order as a reminder.

GP 1: Taking The Title Literally
In this GP, it is all about the one and only Mario! Bowser wouldn't stand a chance against this mob!
Character: Mario
Vehicle: Standard Kart
Courses:
Mario Circuit
GCN Mario Circuit
N64 Mario Raceway
SNES Mario Circuit

GP 2: Dino Duo
Yoshi and Birdo decide to take a romantic bike ride around the locales of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Characters: Yoshi, Birdo
Vehicles: Bon Bon/Sugarscoot, Zyp Zyp.
Courses
DS Yoshi Fails
DS Peach Gardens
DS Delfino Square

GP 3: Low-Tier Cup
In this GP, the Mario cast find that all of the fast vehicles have broken down because they drove them too much! But that won't stop them from holding the GP! Only low-tier vehicles are allowed in this cup, which basically means any vehicle with a speed rating of less than 45.
Characters: Any
Vehicles: Booster Seat/Baby Booster, Cheep Charger, Standard Bike S, Bit Bike/Nano Bike, Classic Dragster, Royal Racer, Bon Bon/Sugarscoot, Offroader, Wario Bike, Phantom, Standard Kart S, Standard Bike M, Zyp Zyp
Courses:

Koopa Cape
Maple Treeway
Dry Dry Ruins

GP 4: Girl Power!
The women of the Mushroom Kingdom want to show the world that they're more than just a pretty face!

Vehicles: Standard Kart S, M, L, Standard Bike S, M, L.
Courses:
Daisy Circuit
GCN Waluigi Stadium

GP 5: The Veto Cup
Everyone has a say in how this GP is formed! Each participant will choose one each of character, vehicle, and track that will be excluded from this GP, meaning that nobody is allowed to select that choice. And "Random" counts as a track which can be vetoed. Use this thread to make your selections, and be sure to get them in before the day of the meet up.

Here's what's been vetoed:
Characters: Funky Kong, Donkey Kong, King Boo, Rosalina, Birdo, Daisy, Baby Daisy
Vehicles: Bullet Bike, Mach Bike, Bowser Bike, Standard Bike Large, Magikruser, Dolphin Dasher, Flame Flyer
Track: Luigi Circuit, Mario Circuit, Rainbow Road, DS Yoshi Fails, N64 Sherbet Land, GCN Waluigi Staduim, N64 DK's Jungle Parkway, GCN DK Mountain

If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask them in this thread!

NWR Forums Discord / Unpopularity Contest [Prize Game]
« on: September 01, 2009, 06:26:35 PM »
It's time for another prize game!
This time around, the loser will be the real winner!
The game is simple: whoever receives the LEAST amount of votes in the poll is the winner. Each person can select up to seven options. Try to guess who has received the least votes so you can increase their count.

The poll will run for a week, and the winner will receive a redemption code for 200 Wii Points.
In the event of a tie, a new poll will be created containing only the tied players.

Don't want to participate? TOO BAD! I'm dragging you into this whether you like it or not!
