Title: 2000 Wii points = 25€?
Post by: KDR_11k on February 24, 2007, 07:30:41 PM
I've seen stores start selling those 2000 point cards for 25€ (would buy 3282 points in the US and 3983 in Japan) instead of the normal 20€. WTF are they thinking?

I've seen US stores selling 2000 Wii Point cards for anywere from $21 to $24. I think they HAVE to mark them up ... and I think that people actually buy them considering I rarely see any myself!!!

Makes you wonder what the hold up is, or is it just that Nintendo has about average supplies when it comes to the additionals but people scarf them up because Nintendo has made people sick with Wii fevor! I'm sorry to break other people's bubble but I see the Wii train being quite hard to stop especially with things like Wii point cards getting snatched up!

Wii Points cards are priced (here in the U.S.) at $20 for 2000 points. Nintendo gets all the money; there is no profit left for the seller. You're probably thinking, "hey, they're being greedy!" Actually, not quite. Apple does the same with iTunes Music Store cards. Possibly Microsoft with the XBM cards, as well. So how does this all work out? Well, if you get a customer to walk into the store and buy a card, then there's a possibility (s)he may buy other products within the place. That's the hope anyhow. Redemption cards are really provided at a convenience, that's all. Some stores do mark them up to make profit though.

Also, Euros =/= USD, etc. You'd be surprised, but Japan is actually paying LESS than the U.S.A. for points. Historically, Japan always pays more for its games, but that's the market. Anyhow, I'm not bickering.

Which is why I've given comparison values for those markets. You get ~50% more points in the US and 100% more in Japan for the same money.

I don't understand why people bother going to the store to buy a Points card.....you don't get it any cheaper, and it's easier to just sit down at home and buy some on the Shop Channel.

Also, I find it very hard to believe that store don't make any money of Points cards.  Even if it's very little, like lottery tickets.  Stores only make .05 of every dollar....it's still some money.  I would have to think that stores at least make a dollar or so off of every 2000 points card sold.

Most banks give you a check card that's tied to your account, and works just like a credit card, except it comes out of your account as soon as you make the purchase (and you never pay any interest).

If you're old enough to regularly be spending your own money on games, you ought to have a bank account.  Not trying to be insulting, but I can't think of a different reason that you wouldn't have one.

Neither me nor anyone I know has a credit card (I had one as part of a special student bundle once but that was in a city at the other end of the Republic). Those things are useless baggage and the only companies that insist on them are foreigners. Some stores even refuse to accept credit cards because they cost too much (3% or so which is AFAIK bigger than the profit margin on groceries here and coincidentally the amount by which the US profit margin is higher) and noone uses them anyway. Cardless (i.e. without physically putting your card into a card reader at the store) debiting only works if you have transferred money to that company's account before AFAIK. Nintendo probably considers the cards sold in stores sufficient.

Wow, this concept is completely foreign to me (no pun intended).  I use a credit card for pretty much everything.  I've gone weeks without so much as touching actual money.

Oh, that's not a problem, our bank cards work for that just fine (though I think not for small sums, stores don't appreciate it if you use the card on less than 5€). Of course not for all stores, it'd be silly to expect a bakery to take card payment since few people pay more than 5€ on one purchase but as long as you only make big purchases you can "live by the card". Not that that's a good idea since card payments make you lose a feel for the money you're spending and can result in spending more than you wanted. Though I hear that latter part is exactly why they push so much for credit cards in the US, it's easy to get in debt with those and pay high interest rates until the day you die.
