Sony learns the not quite so soft way.

It is still very early in the game.

2,000,000>200,000 no matter how early in the game it is, and nintendo's lead is only going to get bigger with 3 factories churning the things out.

Wait we're not taking into account that the PSP isn't out in the U.S.

you know what nintendo should do?? they should start advertising worldwide as if the PSP has already lost, as if its a complete failure from the start. It'd be way below the belt but it'd be genius. And more importantly, if done right, it'd work.  Man...thats the kind of stuff SEGA would have done...god bless their retired hearts.

Sony did a terrible thing releasing aat holiday time.

I mean, parents are gonna wanna pay as less as possible for their kids because they hate them, right?  The only people buying PSPs are the ones that specifically want them over DS's, or rich grandparents who have nothing better to do then relive their childhood fantasies through their spoilt little grandchildren, right?  And don't get me started about those great grandparents.

There's no doubt that the DS is a huge success.  With 2 million systems sold it's getting a lot of notice in the press (I've seen articles about it in the papers, on cnn.com, etc.).  It was definitely the "buzz gadget" of Christmas 2004, which was nice for Nintendo.  I can't see the PSP making as big a splash when it debuts in March; it certainly won't see the frenzied first-week sales the DS did because it isn't releasing during the holidays.  Analysts can say what they want about this being the DS' "honeymoon period" before the PSP debuts, but you can't argue with 1,000,000 consoles sold in the US in roughly a month.  The installed base alone ensures that we'll get some cool games coming out in 2005.

And the other thing is that developers can make games for GBA too and market them as GBA/DS compatable. The compatability is a HUGE deal because it means they can market games for a system with 1,000,000 sold and also for one with like fifty million.

I would't put the PSP in its grave already; while 1 million plus is a nice number to brag about, I can't help but think that these are the same people who most likely have written off the 'Cube.  I hate to sound like a broken record, but it'd be nice if the games were flooding, not trickling before the PSP comes out.

For the past two years, the big N has used the unsuspecting month of March to get good sales. Case in point: Wind Waker and Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire in 2k3, Metal Gear(Despite lack of advertisment, it was number 8 according to NPD) and Pokemon Colleseum in 2k4. Is Sony going for the "Me-too" attitude here with a (tentative) release date in March?

The installed userbase does put the pressure on Sony somewhat, but I don't expect much from the casual gamers who got caught up in the DS frenzy.  I don't mind being wrong though in this case....
