Title: Nintendo World Report Game Club #1 - 2009 Releases Edition
Post by: NWR_Neal on March 08, 2012, 02:59:52 PM
We're trying out a new feature idea here at NWR.

Here's the idea: We vote for a game, and then we all play the winner (most of us at least). During the following month (In this case, April), we'll produce a bunch of editorial content about the game ranging from historical features to opinion pieces. We'll also work in forum comments, and even have a segment on NWR Connectivity about it. For you RFN fans, it's sort of like RetroActive, but it involves the whole staff and the whole site.

In all honesty, I'm not sure how this will all work. Bear with us for round one.

Game 1: A Boy and His Blob (Wii) - Published by Majesco; Developed by WayForward
Game 2: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii) - Published by Konami; Developed by Climax
Game 3: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (DS) - Published by Nintendo; Developed by AlphaDream
Game 4: The House of the Dead: Overkill (Wii) - Published by Sega; Developed by Headstrong Games
Game 5: Let's Tap (Wii) - Published by Sega; Developed by Prope

I voted Mario and Luigi! (I need to finish that game) It is very very good., IMHO.

Interesting idea and wildly diverse selection of games to vote for.  I like and have access to all of them, so will just wait to see what gets picked.
(Edit: Changed my mind.  One game would be much easier for me to play than the others over the next couple of hectic weeks, so placed my vote accordingly.)

Look forward to seeing how this turns out.  I've really enjoyed some "Game Club" type podcasts in the past.  Retroactive is always good that way, and there were a few from Eat.Sleep.Game years ago that were really fun and got me interested in playing some cool older titles (Bully and Gun come to mind) so hopefully this will be just as entertaining.

By the way, I'll create a nomination thread sometime soon. Right now, I want to keep the focus on the first month and see how that goes. We might do a special game for May if this works well.

Surprisingly, I own only two of these... and not even the Mario one! I guess I have some catching up to do...

It's somewhat of a shame that I've already played all those games. On the other hand, I have been looking for an excuse to go back and replay the fantastic Shattered Memories for a while now so it gets my vote. I've already beat it twice but I believe there are a few endings I still haven't seen yet.

You know is Let's Tap as depressing as Let's Catch?

I didn't find Let's Catch depressing. That said, Let's Tap has no story element whatsoever, so the answer is definitely "no" no matter how you feel about Let's Catch.

I have played all of those already, except:

Game 2: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii) - Published by Konami; Developed by Climax

Which I own, so I suppose it has my vote. But I kind of want to play the first SH first, and I won't have time for that in March...

One of the First boys you catch with is out playing catch with you since he has a broken home and talks about it.

Yea, but then you play catch with a baseball player who is secretly a CIA agent looking for aliens in the very park you've been in the whole game. Then you go to space.

Let's Catch is honestly one of my favorite games on WiiWare.

I've gotten the Aliens but not the CIA Agent.

How? If I recall, you have to play catch with the baseball player/CIA agent to even get to space.

It would have to be in that other mode in the menu with the ones that don't talk and you just keep going faster and faster.  I remember laughing when I saw them.

I very well could have been playing catch with him but I didn't hear any "story"

Ooo. Play the story. Unless you're in college and play Bomb Catch as a drinking game, the story is the best thing about the game.

I can't believe there's an extended discussion on Let's Catch here...  the very same day I finally downloaded the game! I love Let's Tap for what it tries to do, and have been very curious about its WiiWare cousin for awhile, especially after learning more about the Story Mode. Excited to try it. (Also, it's baseball season, so I'm feeling up for a good round of toss.)

Oh, man. I'd really love to partake in this, but I don't own any of the games listed above.. and finances are kinda tight at the moment. Eck.

Voted for Bowser's Inside Story mainly because it's sitting in my back catalog right now and this would be a good way to get it out of there xD.

Oh dude Ceric, was it Let's Catch I sent you for WiiWare Secret Santa? Geez, I feel a little guilty now... I hope it wasn't too depressing...

...I should really buy that game for myself and try it out before I gift it to anyone else...

Oh man. It's tied.

I'll get back to you shortly with what we're going to do. It's either Mario & Luigi or A Boy and His Blob.

Not tied now: did someone cast the deciding vote and push Mario & Luigi into the limelight?  Good news for me since this game is next in line for my backlog.
 ;D

The strong showing for A Boy and his Blob is a bit surprising - not because it's undeserving in any way, but just because that game never felt like it received much attention.

I loved A Boy and his Blob because of the beautiful art style and charming design, but wish it had slightly stronger puzzle aspects, or at least some tougher platforming stretches. There were too many instances of "dumbing down" for my liking on both levels.  Unlike some reviewers, I rather enjoyed the slight difficulty bump that boss challenges provided.

Hopefully people who were interested in the game decide it's worth playing through and discussing anyway.

I don't really know what happened, but the poll was over and it was tied. Forums chicanery!

Back to normal.

We had an internal Connectivity debate (since we're going to be doing segments on it) and we settled on A Boy and His Blob. That also gives us an opportunity to possibly show off some cool stuff from WayForward.

A coin flip may or may not have been involved... :D

Slightly disappointed since now I have less incentive to play through Bowser's Inside Story... but A Boy and his Blob really is a beautiful game.  I'm interested to see what other people think about it, and what articles the Connectivity churn out about the game.  Maybe I'll even go back to 100% the game - I think that I skipped a couple of treasure chests in the final set of levels.

There's another thread for talking about the game, but we won't really have other content ready until April. We're hoping we can have some cool stuff, but I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch into Blobs.
