Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 122: Your Very Own Pet Rocket Launcher
« on: January 10, 2014, 01:20:40 PM »
Another great episode and a good co-host!

I got one game correct, since I just recently played game #1, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Yeah, it's a great game!

I never heard of game #2 but I like the music.

I knew what game series the 3rd game was, but I had a hard time remembering which specific game it was. I have played Diamond/ Pearl and almost all the main Pokemon games (I skipped over Black/White 2 and am just starting X/Y). They're fun games!

The second song for game #4 also tipped me off that it was a WarioWare game, but I just couldn't pinpoint which one! The vocals in that song seriously impressed when I heard it on the GBA!

And I should have guessed the 5th game, since I put a lot of hours into COD: Black Ops II (both campaign and online). I agree with all the good things Alex had to say about this Wii U game. It's only my 2nd COD game (I also have World at War on the Wii), and I thought it was a pretty awesome game. I don't play FPS'es much, but this one is very solid. It was great to have this at Wii U launch.

This is just too funny!

I'm so late to post here, but here goes...

For the games I played (#1 and 5), I identified them within the first second, pretty much.

For the games I have not played (#2, 3, 4), I really had no idea!

I would have loved to listen to this live and been able to participate. It was still a lot of fun to listen to this after the fact, and all the winners (including @ClexYoshi) did a great job talking live on the game they got right. Great job everyone!  :)

« on: December 16, 2013, 12:53:09 PM »
I don't know what to say about the Wii U failure discussion, although I do appreciate hearing everyone's opinion on the matter in this episode. I guess I'm one of those Nintendo fans 'living in fantasy land' of sorts: I simply enjoy playing the Wii U very much and wish I had more time for all the games on the system that appeal to me. I had heard about these bad sale numbers in recent days but figured "Hey, Nintendo knows what they're doing, right? And what else can they really do to convince people to play awesome Wii U games if people have already made up their minds not to give it another look." It seems strange to me to hear from the Nintendo fan community itself that this system doesn't scream 'come get me,' but yeah, I can see how that is possible after listening to this episode. After hearing you guys talk about it, I can definitely see Nintendo should be doing a better job driving the reason WHY people should be excited. And James made an excellent point: Nintendo can't really do this until they're absolutely clear themselves what the message is in the first place.

Personally, the Wii U is an easy sell and has been a constant source of satisfaction since launch day simply because it has games that I love playing, and one year later, that library of games has only grown larger and will only continue to get larger. Therefore, I am absolutely happy being a Wii U owner. Of course, given the current state of the system, I am concerned about the Wii U's future. Someone on the show said it well: it's not about what can the Wii U do to save Nintendo, it's what can Nintendo do to save the Wii U.

In all honesty, the best any of us can hope can come out these awful sales numbers is that Nintendo will work harder than ever before and really create the products that will appeal to the gaming community. I find it sad that the gaming industry at large has become synonymous with the words 'Xbox' and 'Playstation' (well, not true, I know: Steam is a big thing too) and not much else, really. I feel like the game industry has become so large and mainstream that Nintendo has a very tough road ahead to find a way to set itself apart somehow.

------------

As for games discussed on the show:

Wii Fit U: I wasn't excited about it much after having played the demo a little, but hey, it sounds like there are actually some fun activities! Maybe I didn't give the demo enough time, as all I was experiencing was the balance test found in the first game, as well as some of the same strength and yoga exercises.

Hey, thanks for mentioning on the show you can import your friends' Miis on Wii U just by going through friend list. Didn't know that!

Hey Guillaume, you've sold me on 3D Galaxy Force II. I had never heard of this arcade game either, but seeing some video of it now: it looks great indeed! I'm sure it looks fantastic in 3D.

RIP Danny Wells. I loved watching that show as a kid.

Oops, I can't edit my post? I should have read the part that says the other Pokemon soundtracks are scheduled for release in 2014!

I… had no idea this was even a thing on iTunes! Awesome. I am sooo buying the soundtracks, and I truly hope it doesn't take long before we start seeing the other Pokemon game soundtracks available as well!

Actually, I would love seeing more game soundtracks available for purchase, in general!

Wow, Yoshiaki Koizumi is one awesome game developer! You know, there's so much talent at Nintendo that I need to recognize beyond the typical names like Miyamoto, Aonuma, Tezuka, etc.

I got 2 out of the 5 games, not too good!

I identified games 1 and 2 pretty quickly. Nintendo Land is a fun game overall packed with great style and lots of replayability, with a nice soundtrack to boot. I am playing AC: New Leaf, and I can appreciate what it does very well, but like TYP, I think it's just not my kind of game since there aren't specific goals and you could just play with no end in sight.

I had no idea what games 3-5 were. I had not played games 4 and 5, so that makes sense. I wasn't too fond of the music actually.

I should have known Game 3, Harvest Moon 64. I played it alot back when it was new, but yeah, it's been too many years since then. I did try playing the SNES version just recently for the first time, and it was ok.

I didn't get a single game either!

I would have liked to recognize Game 1, Lego City Undercover, since I really would like to play this game. I just haven't got to it yet! I know it's a game worth playing, for sure, and not just from Guillaume's recommendation. Soon, I hope.

And I have come very close to playing Game 2, Avenging Spirit. I consistently nominated and voted for the game over at Negative World whenever we had our monthly Retro Game Clubs. Since it was never selected, I should have went ahead and played it. I was glad to hear Guillaume talk about the game. It does sound interesting.

And the last three games I never played.

Always a pleasure to listen to game music and the commentary! Good job guys.

Very good read!

I think I put in about 40-50 hours or so in the Wii version, and I felt like I was just scratching the surface. The game really is a lot of fun, and I do appreciate how wonderfully designed the game is, but I just can't dedicate that much time to a single game, given my lifestyle. Hence, why I haven't purchased the Wii U version.

Rory, I have the opposite opinion from what's expressed in the review: I love the ground-based levels but was turned off by the air-based missions.

Maybe it's because I played Neo on Wii U first (and loved it) that I found the ground-based levels more enjoyable?

In any case, the air-based missions just feel "off" to me. I can barely aim at enemies with any amount of accuracy due to having so little control over where I am trying to aim while also trying to dodge hazards.

I'll admit, boss fights are pretty awesome, but again the simultaneous aiming and flying makes it a bit annoying.

And I realize Star Fox 64 has a similar set-up, but I think that game is simply better designed in terms of control. The aiming cursor just naturally follows where you maneuver the Arwing.

Perhaps I would enjoy the game more with CPP, but... I'm not willing to shell out $20 (+ shipping) just to use it for this one game

So this is what Game Freak was teasing when they said "The well known game, played all around the world, is about to be reborn thanks to a surprising collaboration."

Nice.

Surprising indeed!

So Shin Megami Tensei I and II (and their remakes) were never officially released outside of Japan, and III was the first one released in North America (on PS2).

This game is appealling, but I prefer not to jump this late into a series (especially with all the spin-off stuff I never touched like Devil Summoner, Devil Survivor, etc.). Will I still enjoy this game?

Nice! I've pretty much decided I'll be downloading Pikmin 3, so this is a nice incentive to just add the funds now.

Ah, looking forward to all the Wii U gaming to be had.  :)

Awesome, I was born and still live in the Dallas area. I can totally relate to not seeing that nice snow that one would associate with Christmas and such.

Anyway! I think I remember this game! It looks like a cool NES game.

Those posters are awesome.

Hmm, Majora's Mask soundtrack! I still have the one I got a long time ago (through Nintendo Power I think?):

but it's definitely missing MOST of the music from the game. I would love to have the entire soundtrack, as this Club Reward claims to be.

« on: July 15, 2013, 11:15:35 AM »
Great episode! My wife and I got a kick from listening since her request was selected, game #3. I reviewed The World Ends With You over at Negative World a couple of years ago. Great game! I remember listening to Greg and the crew discuss it back on RFN, and it really got me interested in playing it. I, for one, love the music, but it's understandable that it won't suit everyone's taste.

Never played game #2, but that music is pretty cool, and it's interesting to hear about the music composer's background. Makes sense for Vortex!

Ah, game #5, I very much enjoyed playing it. I reviewed Pandora's Tower back in May. I remember when James talked about it a long time ago on RFN; just seemed very intriguing. I couldn't be happier to see it finally come out in the U.S., as long as it took.

I really need to go back and play game #1 again. It's such a shame that I haven't played through hero mode yet on Skyward Sword!
