Robbers always want the cash, and maybe some booze and a few packs of smokes, but why don't they ever take all the lotto scratchers?

There is probably more money in those scratchers (~$1000 in ticket cost alone) than there is in the register anyway. So why not give yourself a chance at being a millionaire in the process? Then you won't need to rob liquor stores anymore.

Just a guess, but does the lottery keep track of which instant win tickets they send to each store that sells them? If they do, it would be pretty easy to catch someone who tried to claim a winning ticket that's worth enough not to be redeemable at another store.

Yes, instant lottery tickets do have serial numbers on them (partially to avoid fraud). They are designed specifically for situations like this, so if they are lost or stolen they can be reported and the tickets will be tracked. So if you stole the tickets from a store, they could just report it and prevent you from being able to redeem the money (maybe even the ones that are low enough to cash at stores, but I am not sure about that part). However, I suppose you could try and sell them to people on the street since it would be pure profit for you.

Well there is a serial number above a barcode code on the back that does match the ticket ID on the front (the first 6 of which you use for the 2nd chance drawing in the CA lottery), but there is also a UPC code on the back that is the same for all tickets of the same type.

I'm think they only scan the barcode when redeeming a ticket and the UPC when selling it, but I'm really not sure. I'll ask the liquor store guy when I go redeem the current tickets I got as to how the system works.

I think it's a pretty stupid idea to rob a gas station in the first place.

If you're going to rob something, make it enough so you don't have to rob again. Like a small jewelers or cellphone store (preferably with apple products). And wear a damn mask for god sakes.

I checked with the Liquor store guy and all they scan at purchase is the UPC code. Serial numbers scanned at redemption.
