Nintendo Gaming / RE:Rev in Nov. Wha?
« on: May 28, 2005, 12:58:45 AM »
I am not the biggest Nintendo fan BUT I am going to stand up for it now. NO Nintendo isn't F'd big time if it launches last or its the weakest and launches last. AS you Nintendophiles like to point out it is the most profittable, it does seem to have the most die hard fanboys AND ABOVE ALL ELSE NINTENDO HAS NINTENDO! You Nintendo fanboys want Nintendo games by Nintendo... you guys will get exactly that.  WHAT you won't get is first place or second place in the console wars.... AGAIN. Nintendo doesn't have the bucks, it doesn't have the power, it doesn't have the games, it doesn't have the wider MATURE gamer fan base, etc. I had hoped that the Revolution would be a Nintendo Revolution in that it widened it's gamer base to include the mature audience but it doesn't appear so. I wouldn't be surprised if the revolution sold less than the Gamecube in the end... BUT hopefully it will still be profittable & still be Nintendo instead of a Sony or Microsoft clone.

>>  dude i was wondering where you were brian <<

Hey Perm, I've been around but I haven't had much to say. Late last year I got an Alienware top of the line PC so I am more PC gamer now ... AND I gotta say these forums are a lot deader than they were a year ago and alot of the old names are nowhere to be seen.  I also don't post much because the job keeps me super busy. I worked on Star Wars & will be working on War of the Worlds, Mr & Mrs Smith, Fantastic Four and others, so I won't have time. I will have a very nice full wallet though.

« on: May 22, 2005, 03:14:04 PM »
>>  Wow, haven't seen you round here for a while <<

Yeah I've been pretty busy at work ... working on Revenge of the Sith to other flicks. PLUS I got an ALienware Aurora system so I am more heavily into PC games now. I do still drop by and read the posts but I gotta say Planetgamecube & the forums are A LOT deader than they were a year ago. Since I've got my souped up Alienware ... all current consoles & their games look bad to me. And with the next gen around the corner, if the next gen demos look anywhere near the real games, I will be a console gamer again. But right now it is PC games for me.
Yeah it seems like a lot of the posters from the previous years have gone away. Anyone remember DrGakman ?
Like I said I will probably get the 360 & PS3 ... but if one or both are in the $ 500 range... I can do without. I can afford it but for some reason I dont ' think I can get myself to drop $500 on a game machine. HOPEFULLY BOTH Sony & Microsoft know this and the magic $300 price point remains in effect. As for PS3 ... if it is $300 and a Blu-Ray player... I can't go wrong. At the very least I would have a new Blue Ray DVD movie player.
As for Revolution... it better be a Nintendo revolution and I mean in their way of thinking / game thinking. For me to get Nintendo next round it better offer better graphics than atleast one of the other two , better have outstanding exclusives that I want to play ( a Resident Evil 4 type exclusive ) and they better have A LOT of third party games and mature games. If they go the same way of Gamecube ... I seriously doubt I will ever pick up the Revolution.

>> I will not even think of getting a PS3 if they keep the controller design. <<
Yeah the PS3 controller sucks. I hate those sharp looking long ends.

Yeah I saw it too. Actually I work in the motion picture industry and I saw it six weeks ago and saw it again on opening day. I so wanted to post here and spill the beans but I am not able to ( or I lose my cool paying job ). Anyway I liked it a lot. It was a zillion times better than the last two bad movies. It was a good movie. It isn't the best Star Wars movie, that is still The Empire Strikes Back. The good: The action scenes, the battles, the lightsaber battles, etc. The bad: the script and non-action scenes. George Lucas should have provided the basic storyline of the trilogy, gotten a great screen writer and a great director and this trilogy could have been as classic as the first trilogy. I do recommend Revenge of the Sith.

General Gaming / What Next Gen Console will you get?
« on: May 20, 2005, 10:21:32 PM »
It is now post E3, and yes it is still very early but since all 3 consoles were unveiled at E3, which console will you get based on what you saw / feel ?
Right now I will be getting both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 at launch. IF the PS3 is $400 to $ 500 then I won't. The Revolution underwhelmed me and since the only thing they really showed was the design ... it makes me think the Revolution will face the Gamecube's fate.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Revolution a lost battle?
« on: May 20, 2005, 10:04:11 PM »
I seriously doubt I will buy a Revolution... DEFINITELY not at launch... maybe never. The Gamecube has been a major disappointment for me and my game tastes skew more to Microsoft & Sony console games. When they showed off the Revolution... I said to myself ' Nintendo is doing it again '. They Revolution looks like Gamecube 2 in that it looks like toy again. From cute purple box to bland very small zip drive. I could be wrong and the games could be extraordinary and great and make me want a Revolution but I doubt it. I will definitely get a Xbox 360 and probably a Sony PS3 ( UNLESS it is $400 or $500 , then screw it and I'll wait ).

>> And besides Halo 2 and Fable, both of which we already know about, what did Xbox have?  <<

JADE EMPIRE, Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords, Unreal Championship 2 ( voted by Xplay to be best online shooter or something like that last night ), The Chronicles of Riddick ( supposedly the best looking Xbox game ), that Band of Brothers type game , DOOM 3 ( only the Xbox version got shown at E3 ), Mercenaries ( that got another Xplay E3 award ), Star Wars: Battlefront ( another Xplay award ), Star Wars Republic Commando ( another Xplay award ), FULL SPECTRUM WARRIOR ( this is definitely one I want. Designed specifically for the Xbox and funded by the US Army to act as a squad simulator / trainer. ).
Destroy All Humans, etc.
Just look at the E3 awards nominees, the Xbox has alot in almost all categories.

>> It's like they want you to die or something...  <<

Actually the reverse. Like I said I have great insurance.... alot of people say I have among best insurance / health plans in the US. I work in the Motion Picture Industry so I have Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health plan. Doctors love to see my insurance card. Anyway I think they LOVED me because of my insurance because SINCE I was in the hospital 9 days... I saw a good amount of people come and go. And some of those people seemed sicker than me but low and behold..... I assume they had crappy insurance, and they went.

>> or live in Canada .<<

Yeah after receiving my insurance payment letter, I thought alot about Canada and the UK.  Man if I didn't have my insurance I hate to think what kind of mess I would be in. Canadians and Britons are better off in general than the American citizen. Shame. BUT I did have an RN ( registered nurse ) who worked all over the world and she said the quality of American medical care and drugs are better than Britain BUT that is if you are insured..... if not , no.

>>  want to know how you managed to walk around for five days with a BURST appendix, not an enflamed appendix but one that already burst, without having enough discomfort to seek medical attention <<

Supposedly.... and I mean supposedly ( I don't think so )...... I have an extraordinary high tollerance for pain. On the last Saturday of March I didn't eat much all day, ordered a pizza - ate about a quarter of it and felt totally full then felt a somewhat bad stomachache. This is when I assume my appendix burst. The next day - sunday - most of the pain was gone but still had a minor stomachache - about a 2 on the pain scale of 1 to 10. I kept this minor stomachache of 2 on the pain scale until Wednesday. I started work on Weds at 4 but started to feel lightheaded and left at 700pm. I decided small stomachache PLUS lightheaded ... yeah better go to the ER. Got to ER by 8pm, it took ER doctors until 5 am in the morning to finally find out it was my appendix. I got Xrayed, mulitple blood tested and triple contrast CT scan. The CT scan SUCKED the most..... I had to drink 3 large glasses of contrast Barium chemicals, had an IV of contrast going into my arm veins and worst of all a freaking rectal bag of like a gallon of contrast which shot up my butt and had to keep there for 20 minutes. THAT HURT.
Anyway the docs said I probably have a really high tollerance for pain and that I had atypical case because I didn't have nausea ( except drinking all that Barium in the ER ), I wasn't throwing up, and my pain was really low. I drove myself to the ER and felt great until the contrast stuff.

>> You either feel no pain or you're really stubborn. Had you gone to the hospital earlier then you probably wouldn't have had such a high bill.  <<

Well I had no symptoms before it burst. You usually feel sick, nauseous, throw up alot , have pain in the area etc. I had basically none of that. As for the costs.... Once the appendix bursts, you get infections from all the poison. I got a feeling alot of the costs were all the IVs of strong anti-biotics they pumped into me 24 hours a day for 9 days.

Seriously. I was walking around w/ a burst appendix for five days when I finally felt ill enough to go to the hospitial. After about 9 hours in the ER where they poked and prodded me,  a CT scan finally found it. Immediately got emergency surgery and spent 9 days in the hospital. Just got my bill for $ 100,000 BUCKS!!! Thank god I've got great insurance / health plan. They paid for everything but WOW $ 100,000 bucks.

Ian Sane - The guy I was originally replying to. Thank you for actually debating / arguing your side with me rather then some of the fanboyish responses I got.

>>  don't see how Halo 2 is going to be such a big system seller. If you're interested in Halo 2 odds are you already bought an Xbox for Halo 1. If you don't already own Halo I don't see why you would have any interest in the seque<<

My response: PS2 owners. The Xbox is still superior hardware and while the PS2 is technologically maxed out and IMHO it is close to being maxed out on how many PS2 owners there can be. IF you want a PS2 and if you look at how many PS2s have been sold....... it is close to capacity. Those guys have nowhere else to go until the next generation comes out except Xbox and Gamecube and Gamecube doesn't appeal to them. The Xbox is now cheap and it is definitely better hardware. Nintendo Gamecube doesn't appeal to PS2 owners... they still have a place to go before the Next generation comes out. HALO still sells big because there are newer and newer Xbox owners.... first timers. Old Xbox owners are NOT  buying ADDITIONAL copies of Halo that keeps Halo in the best seller lists. It is brand new first time Xbox owners. I have had one copy and one copy of Halo since launch. Newer copies of Halo don't have anything new on them. It is the first time new Xbox owners who keep buying Halo. AND once Halo 2 comes out and gets its massive advertising push it will sell mega millions and PS2 owners have a another and better reason to get a new reasonably cheap Xbox. My evidence to prove my point..... the current sales for the Xbox.

>> Zelda at least has the advantage in that a lot of people who bought Ocarina of Time didn't buy a Cube for Wind Waker. Since the graphics turned off a lot of people I think it's fair to assume they'll come back now that the Zelda they were interested in is back. <<

A good point BUT IMHO.... those same people who bought Ocarina of Time ( myself included ) - their tastes have changed. I bought Ocarina of Time but I am older now and it just isn't me anymore. If you bought Ocarina of Time and remember the N64 days..... you aren't a teeny bopper anymore. You are probably in your late teens or twenties or thirties. Chances are your tastes have changed and skewed older, more mature. Hard core Nintendo fanatics being the exception. The majority of those gamers are now mainstream adult mature title gamers. Look at the latest statistics of VG gamers.... they avg. 29 years old. Those are the guys making the PS2 #1 and Xbox second.

>> I've never quite understood why Metroid Prime didn't sell systems like it probably should have. I mean that game had everything going for it. It appealed to older gamers, was undeniably cool, and it absolutely rocked<<

I agree. Metroid Prime's problem was that is was on the Gamecube. If it was on Xbox or PS2 it would have been a major hit and sold alot more. It was on the wrong system. Plus the ads sucking didn't help either. Am I wrong ? Do you disagree that MP on PS2 or Xbox would have sold better?

>> I think the reason SC did so well was because MS provided a huge incentive that Christmas for people to buy Xboxes with the JSRF double pack. People bought that and then bought Splinter Cell because it was the big new Xbox game at the time. <<

here I disagree. People bought SC because SC is a kick butt game and it was handled properly and sold well because of it. It also sold like hot cakes in that they released it at Christmas time when all the best stuff comes out and people are buying tons of stuff. I am sure the JSRF double pack didn't hurt sales but SC sold because it was an awesome GOTY game that deserved to sell big. The problem w/ Metroid Prime was it was on the wrong system ... great game. wrong audience. Same w/ Eternal Darkness. Do you think ED would have sold as lousy as it did if it was on the PS2? Nope.

>> I'll bet if they had done the $99 price drop then, Metroid Prime would have sold much better.  <<

Agreed. A cheap Gamecube at Xmas with a game worth buying would have sold alot more copies of MP.

12
>> Halo more like "Most overhyped game of century, plus the worst game in my collection" (Yes I do own it, so I can talk down to it all I want) <<

Thats your opinion. It isn't your cup of tea. I love the game and think it is one of the best games ever ( and most game sites and magazines and professional game developer awards ( GOTYs ) seem to agree w/ me ). But who cares. You like it or hate it. I like it or hate it. Who cares.

>> All sales can prove is which game was hyped the most, and means nothing when up against what game is better, so arguing about sales is pointless...  <<

No sales don't prove which game was most hyped. Yes it sometimes does ( i.e. Enter the Matrix - a really crappy game ) but usually good games sell, crap games don't. As for why I was arguing about sales..... read my post. I was responding to the guy talking about how great the new Zelda is and how it will basically cure Nintendo's ills and sell like hotcakes and sell systems with it, etc.

>> My God, BrianSLA is starting one of those "My daddy can beat up your daddy" arguments, and guess what? It's childish, so stop... <<

Again read the post. I don't know where you get the idea it is a ' My Daddy can beat up your Daddy post ' when it isn't. My post is just a RESPONSE. Your post seems to say I am name calling without arguing anything and then goes on to say my post is childish. All my posts argue my points, agree with them or not. I argued my points and didn't name call. You on the other hand didn't argue anything and just name called. Yours is a childish post based on your own statements and post. As for your comment " so stop "..... it is a free country..... atleast where I am living. If you want to debate me..... POST something with atleast some point or arguement.

13
>> lol. I heard that GCN controllers give off electric shocks to anyone with a cool factor above 10%, so no-one cool plays gamecube because they get electricuted. <<

It has nothing to do with cool or whatever..... it is about the type of game the audience the game is meant for. Nintendo fans like Mario & Pikimin type games. Sony and Microsoft fans like GTA3 and HALO type games.

>> Zelda and Halo 2 wont even be going head to head, will they? <<

I seriously doubt it but that wasn't my point. The poster I replied to said something to the effect that Zelda was going to be some super duper mega system seller that ' saves ' Nintendo and kicks it into second place or the like. I say it won't. I said big deal about Zelda and how all the other so called Gamecube system sellers have all basically fallen on their face. Yeah the new Zelda looks good and I am sure it is probably a great game but it isn't going to be some magic potion to cure all Nintendo's ills.

I just don't get why SOME or even a lot of Nintendo fanatics on this site need to have their system become #2 or why they bitch and complain about 3rd party support when the those games don't fit Nintnedo's demogrphics and aren't the type of games Nintendo gamers want. The overwhelming majority of those games aren't games that Nintendo owners want. They aren't kiddie / family / Nintendo type games. They are PS2 / Xbox type games. The games you guys want are the games you are getting. You guys are all freaky about the new Zelda..... you are getting it. The new Metroid.... you're getting that too. That is the reason you bought a Gamecube for Nintendo games... you are getting them.
Nintendo isn't going be number one again... atleast not in the forseeable future considering that mainstream gamers tastes are now different. Mainstream gamers want more mature / action games than kiddie family Nintendo games. Am I wrong? No I am not. If mainstream gamers wanted that,  Nintendo would be #1 instead of #3. You guys would get all the third party games you want, etc.

14
>> Two and a half years is a whole generation to you?  <<

No but this generation is on it's downside. Two years of good prime time and now the tech is old. All consoles have their prime time and then they plateau out and then peter out.

15
>> Only getting a quarter of the amount of exclusives the Xbox has doesn't make sense. The Cube userbase is obviously much more than a quarter of the Xbox's. I guess third parties feel that there can only be two consoles at a time.<<

It makes perfect sense when Gamecube owners don't buy their products or don't fit their sales demographic. Why waste money porting or creating an entirely new game that won't sell on the Gamecube? The Gamecube is for Nintendo fanatics and kiddie game fans. If the game is in some other genre you are A LOT better off making it a PS2 game and or Xbox game.

>> Why they chose the Xbox over the Cube doesn't make much sense though. Well I guess it does now but it's been like this from the beginning. <<

GTA 3 won't sell big on the Gamecube as it will on the Xbox. Pikimin won't sell on the Xbox as it did on the Gamecube. Games generally go where they sell big. If Gamecube owners bought games like crazy..... there would be a ton of games for the Cube. They don't sell, there aren't that many.

>>  A lot of third parties decided what consoles to support before the consoles launched. Why they chose the newcomber over the veteran doesn't really make sense particularly when the newcomber has a history of monopolizing tactics. <<

Game companies would be tripping over themselves if Gamecube owners bought games and lots of them. It is only money and profit for them. Microsoft has also shown it will seriously advertise and make other companies games major hits ( Splinter Cell, KOTOR, etc.). And those games also latter become cross platform to sell more units later.

>> Anyhoo it doesn't really matter because we've got Zelda. That's the game that's going to sell Cubes. GTA3 and Halo have shown that one game alone can trigger massive sales. Combined with the cheap console price I think Zelda has the potential to be the Cube's Donkey Kong Country, the game that ultimately decides what place the console finishes in the console wars. <<

Yeah you got Zelda. Big deal. Seriously. It won't sell as big as HALO 2. It is like Wind Waker and Metroid Prime.... I come to these boards and all I see is how those two great titles will be mega massive system sellers....... NOPE! I have been on these boards for a very long time and when Metroid Prime was coming out and going basically head to head versus Splinter Cell all you guys here said MP would beat down SC big time and I said it wouldn't. Guess who was right. Yes I do think the new BETTER LOOKING Zelda will sell some systems, maybe even a good amount of systems....... BUT it won't beat HALO 2 and how many Xboxes it sells. It won't even be a contest..... the Xbox will blow away the GC in sales by a wide margin.

>>  If Zelda doesn't sell Cubes to mainstream gamers NOTHING will and Nintendo might as well officially become niche developers. <<

Well I do think Zelda will sell Cubes...... it won't bring Nintendo into the #2 spot. This video game console generation is basically over. PS2 won by a landslide. Xbox came in second. Nintendo put on a ok show. This generation's game consoles are on the dying end of their lifespans..... no game or games are going to make people go out and buy in numbers older machines to change that. The next generation is close enough..... this generation is almost done.

As for the comment about Nintendo becoming niche developers....... they already are. They make great kiddie games / Nintendo type - style games. That isn't the mainstream gamer anymore.

16
>> number of Gamecube exclusives: 5......... Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines <<

Better make that 4 exclusives. T3 Rise of the Machines came out last year for Xbox & PS2 around the time the actual movie released. That game sucked and got horrible reviews.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Is there any war games
« on: February 10, 2004, 05:06:57 PM »
The best and most exciting REAL war game is coming very soon, it is called FULL SPECTRUM WARRIOR. It was co-designed by the US Army as a squad leadership trainer. It looks AWESOME... I've seen a bunch of gameplay videos. It was designed by the US Army for the Xbox and is coming soon. You command a infantry squad which is broken up into two fire teams. You control both fire teams and their included members ( riflemen, grenadiers, fire support weapon, etc. ) and assign each soldier their duties. I.E. having your grenadier covering a possible danger zone while having your fire support weapon covering another high danger zone.

General Chat / RE:Best War (or anti-war) movie?
« on: January 18, 2004, 08:01:10 PM »
Basically IMHO the best " PURE " war movie is probably BLACK HAWK DOWN. It is just 100% pure war movie, no melodrama ( Platoon or Full Metal Jacket ) or severely fictionalized movielike story ( Saving Private Ryan ) ... all great movies.... but 100% pure war movie is probably Black Hawk Down. BHD is just a war movie about a single battle with no crappy melodrama or extra stuff. Nothing more, nothing less.  Yes SOME parts and some characters were fictionalized or combined ( Grimes - Ewan McGregor's character is actually Stebbins a guy later convicted in a child sex crime , the Delta Sgts were real but renamed ). I have been in the Army and I have known many Special Ops guys... including a future CSM of the 3rd Ranger Battalion...and Vietnam Hardcore vets and almost all say that combat is not fighting for your country but fighting for the guy next to you.

General Chat / I was wrong.....ROTK isn't good ...
« on: November 28, 2003, 06:34:11 PM »
It is A W E S O M E. Extraordinary. The BEST. The LOTR trilogy is now the best movie trilogy. Star Wars...... peaked at Empire Strikes Back. Godfather......1 & 2 were great but part 3 was ok. Matrix....... they should have stopped after the first one. Star Wars Episode 1 & 2...... even if Ep 3 is spectacular Lucas screwed the pooch big time. FOTR was awesome, The Two Towers was better and ROTK is the BEST. The climatic battle is extraordinary....... it makes the castle siege in The Two Towers look like a tea party. The scenes inside Mount Doom are beautiful. The way the movie wraps up is great too. It will make people sad when they realize this is it... no more LOTR movies every Christmas. Sad but a spectacular movie.

General Chat / RE:What is a "sleeper hit"?
« on: November 20, 2003, 03:02:44 AM »
A " Sleeper hit " is ( in movie terms , something I know about ) is a hit movie that no one expected to be a hit. It is a hit movie that comes out of nowhere. A good example is " The Blair Witch Project " it was a movie no one heard about but it blew it big time from nowhere. A little movie that made over $100 million dollars.
A cult hit is a movie which isn't really popular but has a following. A great example ( AND A GREAT Movie ) is NEAR DARK ... which is the best vampire horror movie you have probably never heard of. I highly recommend it. IT didn't break box office records, I doubt it made it's money back but it has a HUGE cult following and people constantly recommending it. Another cult hit which is BETTER than both Matrix sequels is EQUILLIBRIUM ....... the best Matrix sequel that isn't.

>> why would anyone want to know this? <<

No reason. I was just ranting. I am now making a good amount of money and yet I have no life / no time to use it / I am DEAD TIRED most days.

>> So what do you do? <<

I work in the motion picture industry. I can't really say what I do or who I work for because I would be easily traceable.  But I am in the technical side of the industry... not artistic.

>> but i dont know why anyone would care unless he gave some secret info. <<

O.K. I wasn't going to do it but ROTK starts off with >> S P O I L E R <<  Gollum and it starts when he is a human and finds the ring and shows how he progresses into the deformed thing he is now.

>> Brian, you seem stressed...Don't push yourself too hard <<

Not so much stressed but TIRED. Also sleep deprieved. I have only had a handful of days off in months.

>> He's a liar. I can smell it <<

Nope. Last year I posted about The Two Towers..... I talked about the Ents. Any old posters from last year should remember I talked about the Two Towers way way way ahead of schedule. I also posted about X MEN 2 way before it came out and said it had a surprise ending. ETC.

>> He's a hooker. A high class one <<

No but I actually see LOTS of hookers when I leave work in the wee hours of the morning........ UNFORTUNATELY they are 99.99999 % men dressed up as women!  I swear I don't know why anyone would go after a guy dressed up like a woman ....... I mean if you want a girl, get a girl. Want a guy, get a guy..... but what is the purpose of a wanting a transvestite? Are they for the seriously confused who want women but with a penis? I dunno. I do also see female hookers in very scant clothes. It is weird to see hookers dressed up like hookers in very little clothing in the really cold morning weather.

22
>> Why hasn't he replied <<

I've been working....... again I have been working A LOT.

>> Probably working and watching Return of the King <<
Yup.

23
For the past couple of months all I do is work. Almost every day, 8 hours minimum to 12 hours a good deal... But I am making around $2,000 to $3,000 a week and I am seeing a good deal of big movies. I have seen good portions of LOTR ROTK - its good. I am working so much that sometimes I don't know what day it is. I have bought a bunch of new video games but I have no time to play them so they sit unopened. I started a year ago with HUMONGOUS debt and now I am within sight of being debt free. I would be gloriously happy if I wasn't so tired most of the time.

I've been tricked by EA twice to buy their CRAPPY James Bond games. Agent Under Fire and Night Fire SUCKED so hard I won't buy another EA James Bond game until every single website & magazine says it is the best frickin' game ever. I suggest others do the same.

Again I've seen a good portion of an upcoming  movie...... not the full finished product ... BUT from what I have seen it looks good. I am not sure if it is or isn't a good movie ..... again I haven't seen the full movie yet.... but it looks good. I did see a great part of SWAT and thought it looked good BUT that movie was severely mediocre.

I saw a great scene SEMI-SPOILER  where a group of vampires are on a train...... some secret agent type vamps armed with MP5 submachine guns realize something is up / look at ceiling ..... when wham! a bunch of werewolves attack..... gun fight..... vamps totally chowed down by the the huge werewolves. Necks bitten out. ANother scene where Kate Beckinsale's character ( the black leather catsuit corsetted one ) wastes an assault team through the door, etc.
