Title: The UK
Post by: 09n on February 22, 2005, 10:07:32 AM
OK. Who of all of you people from the US or Australia or where ever else would prefer to live in the UK. Here are the Pros:
Good Exchange rate with other countries
Easy languange (for most immagrants)
Lowish taxes
Reasonable Goverment.
Long and proud history

And the Cons
Tony Blair as Prime Minister
Expensive housing
Annoying council tax
Does not have good international relations. (Due to our wars with france Germany Africa ect)
Games sometimes come out two years after they do in japan.

I await your input. (I'm thinking of applying at cambridge but should I apply for Princeton)

What does "Lowish Taxes" mean to you?

BTW: Easy languange (for most immagrants) <--- Quote of the Day!

Lowish means the taxes aren't too demanding on yuor income.

What are you getting at. For immagrants from America, Australia, India, Africa, a lot of asia all have english as a main language so it won't be too strange for them if they move.

No thanks.  I'd much rather stay in the home of the brave.

You spelt "immigrants" wrong.

Seriously why ask this question? Do you live in the UK and are proud of your country/countries (seeing as the UK is Great Britan and Ireland)? I can't say i would prefer to live in a country because of all the pro's you have provided...

I would love to live anywhere in the EU.  Well, not anywhere.  Either England, France, Italy, Spain, or one of the other good countries.  Not Poland or Belarus or one of the crappy countries.  After graduate school, I want to move to France.

In America, in my experience, we're always taught at a young age how America is the greatest country in the world, and we were so lucky to be born here.  And I've always wondered, what's so bad about Europe?  Or Canada?  Or Australia?

I've been doing a lot of international eBay-ing and other online purchases, and I can't believe how weak the dollar is now compared to what it used to be.  It's almost 2:1 against the GBP.  The euro started 1:1 with the dollar, but now 1 euro is $1.30.  Living in Europe would benefit me at the moment.

It's called nationalism, matt.  It exists in even the most desolate and pathetic of countries.

Nationalism. Well you could call it that. But I can assure you it does not happen in every country to the extreme of the US. I mean making a 5 year old take the pledge of allegiance (< may be spelt wrong) is just strange after all a 5 year old wont revolt unless sweety prices skyrocket. In France for instance there are jokes going round about President Chirac (< once again may be spelt wrong) in the UK nobody trusts the government so much so that little old ladies of 80 odd will still stand up to the chancellor of the exchequer (Gordan Brown). Sorry I got a bit carried away. Well you get the idea.

And over fifty percent of the US is positive that the POTUS is a nutcase, your point? "Thoughtcrime" happens everywhere.

While we're on this topic, come to Germany, where real men have real beer, age of consent is fourteen and those damn I LOVE HALO 2s can't get their hands on GTA 3 legally. Did I mention it's the world's second largest source of porn and warez? Oh, and it's just a missile launch away from London! Come to Germany where people hate the GC because you cannot pirate games on it, where XBox Live is a futile endeavour because nobody has a credit card and where the law enforces a warranty longer than the lifetime of a PS2! And the Döner Kebab is the most popular fast food available!

Or even better, come to Texas.  Where there's three guns to every citizen.  Where Mexicans do all our labor while we bask in our kick ass basketball and hockey teams.  Where the prettiest girls live, and where the age of concent is 17 (not as good as Germany, but I don't want to go pork a 14 year old anyways, and like Chef said, "Everyone's ready at 17").  Also did I meantion that God blessed Texas with his own hands? (it's a song, so don't get all idolotry on me).

I'm in Louisiana.  We have tasty food, swamps, and bizarre weather.  Like Texas, the age of consent is 17 and we've got plenty of pretty ladies.

It's an awesome place, but probably an acquired taste.

I live on the Jersey shore.  Very close to New York and Philly, so there's always something to do.  Our age of consent is 16, but I don't see what that has to do with anything.  Our driving age is 17.  We have a lot of farms.  I like New Jersey.  But I'd like to live in Paris.

The UK is England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland (counties Antrim, Derry, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Down and Armagh) not the other 26 counties, I would advise you not to call Ireland part of the UK to anyone from Ireland both (North and South), it's a touchy subject and some even in the six counties will be very annoyed by it even if you didn't  mean anything from it, just a heads up!

I'm of the general opinion that if you're not happy where you are, you won't be happy where you go.  It depends on you, not the place.

Feel free to prove me wrong, though

Matt Oz wins this thread for living in New Jersey.

True story.

New jersey sounds a lot like the UK (which does not include Ireland).

I am happy where I am.  I could live in New Jersey for the rest of my life.  But I would like to live in a city, because I hate having to drive everywhere.  (Especially since I don't have the money for a new car.)  I lived in New York for a short time, and it was so easy to get around, just go outside and hail a cab, or walk to the subway station.  In suburbia, you need a car just to drive to the bus stop.

To get back onto the topic (sort of), has anyone here ever been to Edinburgh, SCOTLAND?  I've heard that it's very underrated as a tourist destination, and that the people are very friendly.  It sounds like a fun place to go.

edit: there was apparently some confusion as to which edinburgh i meant.

Middle of Nowhere is the best place in the world to live in.

I'm in Berkeley, California right now... but as soon as I'm done with UC I'll be going back.

HC has the best idea. Louisiana ROCKS! Execept during hurricane season and the New Orleans scholl board is crap. And let's not forget Mardi Gras.
