TalkBack / Re: Switch Twitch App To End Service On January 31
« on: October 31, 2023, 09:34:08 PM »
I wonder on any given night, how many people are concurrently streaming Twitch using the Switch app. I’m talking globally here. 10 people at any given moment? 5? One?

All this attention is sure to help the game’s sales. I hope this Bayonetta entry lives up to the hype.

How long until Rairdan announces his departure from NWR to join the Digital Foundry staff?

Nice review. I like Platinum games, but I am also a Nintendo-only gamer, so I haven’t played this one yet. Will definitely be picking it up.

FINALLY! F-ZERO ON SWITCH IN HD WITH ONLINE PLAY!
Online play… with friends. Just like all the other NSO retro titles. Not with random opponents like Mario Kart 8. Still, it should be fun and I have a couple friends I will be playing this with. Keep bringing the 4-player multiplayer games, Nintendo!

TalkBack / Re: 48 New Tracks Won’t Save Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
« on: February 28, 2022, 09:43:06 PM »
Nah. The DLC pack is the better play here. MK8 is very popular and still has tons of momentum, showing what a crowning achievement it really is. Mario Kart 9 is being developed as we speak, no doubt. When it finally launches, it will be incredible, with real blockbuster features to advance the gameplay in a meaningful way, not “reverse tracks” you seem so fond of (and no, a track in reverse does not equal a new track).

TalkBack / Re: 6 Kirby Games to Play Before Kirby and the Forgotten Land
« on: February 19, 2022, 11:58:30 PM »
The Kirby series is right up there with Mario in terms of just the sheer volume of inventive new entries, most of which are well received. It’s crazy to think of just how many quality Kirby titles are spread out over all of Nintendo’s consoles and handhelds over the decades. Forgotten Land looks to be yet another winner from HAL.

I hadn’t played this game since it first released! Yes I’m old. Just today I beat it on NSO - nearly 100% after shameless abuse of save states. What a game.

I also really love this author’s in-depth analysis videos. Please keep them coming I always watch them through to the end.

It’s not published by Nintendo, so a price drop is inevitable. I’m happy to have it now, but I think $20-25 sale price in the future is likely.

TalkBack / Re: New Switch Firmware Adds Support For Bluetooth Audio
« on: September 15, 2021, 10:57:01 AM »
There is noticeable latency, but for most games this will be fine. I play my Switch during my lunch break, usually with no audio since the switch didn’t support BT. I didn’t want to carry around a set of wired earbuds just for Switch. So for me this is very helpful!

I bought it and am happy to have it in my collection (I don’t sell or trade in my games).

I was prepared for another half-baked Cruis’n port since I lived through the N64 era and still have a soft spot for these arcade racers anyway. To my surprise, this title was developed by the same folks responsible for the arcade version. They became an official Switch developer during COVID and spent their time cranking away on this port while the arcades were largely closed. Really thankful they did because we finally have a Cruis’n home experience comparable to the arcade original.

Is this Big Brain game NA only or worldwide?

The video shows Americans playing Japanese players online, so I think it’s safe to say worldwide release.

I heard the Brain Training category of games ran into legal troubles in the U.S. which is why we didn’t get the sequel. Too bad, although the Switch screen isn’t great for drawing and sketching compared to the 3DS.

TalkBack / Re: The History and Development of Star Fox Command

Great work everyone! I watched it beginning to end, and was left impressed with the attention to detail and production values involved. Thank you for putting together this wonderful behind the scenes look at the development of a game I love dearly.

I know you can’t expect to get this sort of participation from internally developed projects at Nintendo, but perhaps other 2nd-party Wii/DS era studios like Monster Games or Next Level Games would be willing to sit down with you to reminisce.

Anyway, keep up the great work!

Perfect. Well, if it were also fanless, this would be perfect. I didn’t want some base-splitting New Nintendo 3DS moment again. This looks like Nintendo is holding off on the Switch 2 for a few more years. Just the news I was hoping to hear. I’m buying this Day 1 btw.

Who’s the very critical member of this podcast? Is it Justin? Basically this guy knows his Mario Golf. All his critiques are spot on and 100% accurate. The more I go back and play Toadstool Tour, the more I see how sad this new MG is compared to a game made nearly 20 years prior.

The new hitting mechanic lacks technical depth, the power shots are pointless, the “courses” are one large map instead of individually curated holes as in previous entries, and so much more. A “golf adventure” is unnecessary and in no way compensates for the myriad fun modes which used to play a significant role in Mario Golf. Also, this game is completely devoid of charming celebration animations and voice clips. Just a cheap rushed sad attempt to add a new entry into an established and beloved franchise. Total disappointment.

TalkBack / Re: Mario Golf: Super Rush (Switch) Review
« on: June 29, 2021, 11:16:05 PM »
I definitely am enjoying the game more than this reviewer. I even sat down for a few hours with Mario Golf Toadstool Tour, Mario Golf 64, and Mario Golf World Tour (3DS) for honest comparison. This new iteration is very sterile in the menus and overall presentation, almost skewing more into sim territory. So the Mario charm is really suppressed here.

That said, I actually prefer the new shot system, and the two player split-screen simultaneous play steals the show. Seriously awesome. It’s certainly different from the old versions, but I like many of the changes. As a longtime fan of the series who owns ALL the Mario Golf games, I think with the inevitable upcoming courses, this is a great new entry for old or new fans.

My survey asked me if I would buy a new WarioWare game for $29.99. Uh, yes. Yes I would.

I have an 11yo and 13yo who are counting down the days till this game releases.

Awesome review. I wish more people had appreciated this game. Instead, it probably sealed the fate of the StarFox series for good. I’m grateful this game ever got made at all. Thanks for this bit of nostalgia.

30fps on Switch. I wonder why they couldn’t hit 60fps like Burnout Paradise did. Oh well if it’s a consistent framerate I think it looks pretty fun.

TalkBack / Re: What's The Deal With March 26?
« on: September 24, 2020, 12:57:38 AM »
Maybe I’m the only one, but I don’t want a Switch Pro, Switch 2... whatever. At least not yet. What I want to learn about late March 2021 is that these games and many more are developed for the *current* Switch and they’re amazing.

What I wouldn’t mind seeing however, is a Switch revision that includes better Joy-Con, a bigger screen (i.e. smaller bezels), a brighter screen, no fan, increased battery life. These are the quality of life improvements I’m looking for. Basically an upgraded Switch like the DS lite was for the original DS. But otherwise I have no desire to upgrade consoles already. The Switch is barely 3.5 years old.

Nice one John. Funny video. I remember playing Star Fox as a young 13yo and being blown away by the polygonal gameplay. The low framerate didn’t even bother me at the time, as I really didn’t have much to compare it with on consoles in the early 90’s.
But I’m glad that the gaming community in general has made it abundantly clear to developers that poorly optimized games (even ports from more powerful consoles) are not acceptable and must be patched/fixed to run at a consistent baseline 30fps. The Switch even gets a fair amount of 60fps ports albeit sometimes via a “Performance Mode.” Still, this trend is a good thing for games in general.
