Iwata: 3DS Could Bring 3D Movies into the Home
« on: January 22, 2011, 08:04:40 PM »

Nintendo is interested in bringing Hollywood to the handheld.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24857

In a recent interview with Shigesato Itoi, Japanese copywriter and creator of the Mother series, Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata sat down to discuss the Nintendo 3DS. Among other topics, the three gaming icons discussed the relevance of 3D television and movies to the new handheld.

"Simply put, people making 3D content today are having trouble because of a lack of output," noted Iwata. Iwata's solution, not surprisingly, was that the Nintendo 3DS would serve as the gateway for 3D movies into the home. The idea that the Nintendo 3DS would become a household item much faster than glasses-free 3D televisions has both Miyamoto and Iwata excited about this new kind of content.

In a discussion reminiscent of the early days of Wii Connect 24, Miyamoto postulated that the 3DS will be able to automatically download new movie trailers as the system charged overnight. Miyamoto was also excited about the prospect of 3D movies being made with the 3DS in mind, mentioning that, "recently Hollywood is taking Nintendo seriously." According to Iwata, Nintedo has been shopping the 3DS around Hollywood, and it has been met with much excitement.

Despite their confidence, Iwata did express some doubt, "I'm not really sure what will happen—how the world will take it, how it will catch on." With 3D still being unproven as a consumer product, perhaps his doubts aren't unfounded.

The entirety of the interview is available on the Nintendo website under the title: And That's How the Nintendo 3DS Was Made.

Bless you, my child.

Now they better follow it up with some flagship trailblazing Netflix 3D support.

make that happen and everything else falls into place.

Now all they need to do is provide the 3DS with some T.V out. That would awesome for the pictures as well as the movies, and even possibly VC games and 3DSWare that doesn't need the touchscreen. I speculated a while back that the 3DS (especially with that still unknown-purposed IR) could be the Wii2. While I don't actually believe that, it would be cool, and it's already a 3D capable system.
Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

TV out is a total 3DS Lite feature.

Maybe it will support DNLA since most of the reason of a 3DS TVout would be lost on a non 3D TV anyway, and I'm sure all 3DTV's support DNLA or are capable of it.

It's DLNA not DNLA (not trying to be a dick, just saying) and it's a Sony tech so I don't how happy Nintendo would be about going that route. I know a lot of companies use it, but none of them are still smarting over the PS1/N64 fallout.

Personally I'm hoping for Wifi Direct. It can be instituted with a firmware update and only the 3DS would need it for it to work with any other Wifi device and there are lots more Wifi TVs than DLNA TVs and there will be even more going forward.

Yeah, I still don't know exactly what DLNA is.but Wifi Direct sounds like the exact same thing and lots of TV's are getting Wifi enabled either buiilt in or through a USB stick, so that does sound like the better(license free?) option.

If you haven't read the entire interview, you really should.  Those guys are wack-jobs, and I mean that in the best possible way.
About not saying too much when describing your product -- Itoi:  "You just have to convey that sensation that 'It really works!'—rather than a scientific explanation about how two lines of sight align to create a 3D image. (clapping hands together) When you clap your hands together like this and ponder which hand made the sound, you do it because you enjoy the thought process and that mysterious feeling you get from it, not because you're looking for a scientific explanation."

DLNA is a industry standard for sharing media, so your computer or network-attached hard drive can sort of "advertise" itself as a media player and advertise the movies/pictures/songs it has stored, and then a DLNA-compliant playback device like a newer Blu-Ray player, TV, or a settop box like a WD TV Live can autmatically show a list of what's on the computer or harddrive.

Basically it means playing files from a computer on your TV across your network is really easy.

Thanks, now what is Wifi Direct and how do they differ?

Which do you think would be a better fit for 3DS regardless of licensing and factors such as who make the tech?

Wifi Direct basically turns a device with the software into a local router, in that it can set up a local network for other Wifi devices to connect to and share information.

This would sell me on a 3DS.  I don't have any need for a portable system.  To me it's just another system with its own exclusive games.  Let me play the game on a TV and I'll buy it.  It would also let me play original DS games on the TV!  That ALONE would convince me to buy it.

The touchscreen can be handled by simply displaying the picture on the 3DS and the TV.  So instead of looking down from the top screen to the touchscreen I look from the TV to the touchscreen.  Either way I move my eyes from one to the other.

They won't do it though.  No way.  Too convenient and too potentially confusing for simpletons.
