Miiverse Ending Service On November 8
« on: August 29, 2017, 12:00:59 AM »

Good night sweet prince, and may flocks of crawling Metroids sing thee to thy rest.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/45240/miiverse-ending-service-on-november-8

Nintendo's first foray into social networking will pass away just before its fifth birthday.

Miiverse will be shutting down on November 8 at 1 a.m. Eastern time (10 p.m. November 7 Pacific time) according to the post on Miiverse and Nintendo's support site. Use of other social media platforms is being blamed for the dismissal, as well as Miiverse not supporting the Switch.

Details have been given on how the change will affect current Wii U and 3DS games, available here. Notably, Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. replays will no longer be available for upload, and Super Mario Maker levels will not receive comments.

RIP Miiverse, you will be missed.

I think it is far too soon to end it, especially when the 3DS is still being supported. I would have expected another year out if it at least

Booooooo!! It's a shame they're discontinuing it outright. I was kinda hoping it'd revert to some sort of 'read only' version, so that when you boot up the Wii U it'll still show some "best of miiverse" (or worst of?) posts for an automatically rotating number of titles.

Same for in-game stuff, would be nicer if the Sm4sh stages and stuff continued to exist even if one could no longer add to them. Suppose that type of support costs them money though. :(

EDIT: I'm making a list of all Wii U titles and their Miiverse functionality. Help me expand it here!

I'm pretty sure that causality is reversed. Since there's no reason Switch couldn't have supported Miiverse, it's pretty safe to say the lack of support was due to their plans to end the service.

Yeah, I'm shocked that it was this sudden especially with the 3DS still being a viable platform that is using it. I think it is definitely a cost issue which was discussed a bit when Nintendo first announced that the Switch wouldn't support Miiverse. Better start saving some images I've posted.

Important note: You can go to Miiverse and request that Nintendo sends you an archive of the posts and screenshots you've made.

What about Super Mario Maker?

It'll receive a patch/update to continue allowing level sharing. Commenting on levels will no longer work, though.

I guess since the Switch is a huge hit Nintendo feels no need to continuing features on the Wii U and 3DS that don't make them money.  Even with the 3DS still getting a huge push this year most of that was because Nintendo wasn't going to put all their eggs in one basket in case the Switch bomb.  Now that the Switch is a huge success I suspect they have no problem getting rid of the 3DS at a faster rate then originally planned.

Kind of a dick move to not wait until at least mid 2018 to get rid of Miiverse since there's still several major titles for the 3DS coming out this year and even the Wii U still has the Breath of the Wild story DLC this fall as well.  But to Nintendo I imagine come 2018 they want to be 100% focused on the Switch especially when the system still has yet to reveal it's paid online service Nintendo has talked about so might as well cut off most of what's left of the old services on the Wii U and 3DS, except for the ones that actually still make some money like the eShop.

This sucks, I was hoping they'd eventually add it to Switch.

What I find really messed up is that this means you can no longer unlock everything in Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars. You needed to get stars from Miiverse to unlock everything, though Nintendo will continue selling the game. So anyone who buys the game after November 8 will not be able to get everything (unless they patch the game to let you get them other ways).

The same thing happened with a lot of games when Nintendo Wifi Connection went down. Things like Dragon Quest 9's downloadable quests are completely inaccessible today.
