DJ Hero 3 Confirmed?
« on: September 27, 2010, 10:58:49 AM »

The young series is moving forward after DJ Hero 2, and it looks like there are more games on the horizon.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/24117

Nintendo World Report attended an event on September 23rd in anticipation of the release of DJ Hero 2, and talking with Doug Grutzmacher, an Associate Producer at Activision, we were able to get the following quote after asking about what we could expect with the next major release, DJ Hero 3:

"I can't talk about anything [specifically], other than saying that the direction we took from DJ 1 to DJ 2 in terms of broader music, more creativity, customization and more social elements to get more people involved in the game - that's the direction we're going to continue to go as we take the franchise [forward]. More things along those lines, but that's about as specific as [I can get]."

While Mr. Grutzmacher wasn't able to get too in-depth with what we'll see in (presumably) next year's release, it is the closest thing we've got to a confirmation that the series will be moving forward at all.

Stay tuned to NWR for more details pertaining to this event later today.

Does Activision realize that the whole idea of sequels is to make them for successful games and to ride on the name value of the original title?  DJ Hero did not light the world on fire.  In fact stores seem to be full of unsold turntable controllers.  So why are they planning this series THIS far ahead?

My theory is that these companies think that people instinctively buy sequels so you should make a series out of everything.  Even if no one played DJ Hero if they see that DJ Hero 4 is in stores they'll assume that "DJ Hero" is some big videogame franchise and that it's about time they found out what all the fuss was about.  It's like videogame peer pressure.  The sequels, while warranted or not, give the impression that the game is popular and therefore YOU should be playing it.  I think we're just a step away from the first game of a series having "2" in the title to begin with so that it never appears to have been a new unfamiliar game.

I think that Activision just invested a lot of money into developing DJ Hero and its special controller, so they are going to keep pushing it until it becomes popular or they go out of business.

I think we're just a step away from the first game of a series having "2" in the title to begin with so that it never appears to have been a new unfamiliar game.

To be fair, that is because the character is named Anubis II (so it's pronounced "Anubis the Second" rather than "Anubis 2"). It's like P.N. 03, or plays like Henry VIII.

OK, I didn't know that. You would be surprised how many people get it wrong (or maybe not, segments like "Jaywalking" on The Tonight Show show that a large number of people can't even identify the President or Pope but can identify cast members of Jersey Shore).

Back when the film Apollo 13 came out there were constant jokes about having to see Apollo 1-12 first.  There is also an urban legend that The Madness of King George was named as such because they feared if they called it The Madness of George III that Americans would think it was a sequel.

Power Punch II for the NES is an actual "sequel" where there is no original Power Punch.  The game was originally being developed as a sequel to Punch-Out but was rejected by Nintendo because it sucked.  The new publisher likely promoted it as a sequel in hopes that people would think it was a Punch-Out sequel.

One interesting thing about DJ Hero is that the content pool is virtually unlimited. The game consists of combinations of songs, and thus is not bound to the number of songs out there, nor is it restricted to songs that have interesting guitar parts. Instead of merely being derivative of popular music, it actually adds to it.

Sorry if that sounded like a press release-it's just that I love this game.
