Five Worst Gaming Articles of 2005 ;_;
« on: December 30, 2005, 10:29:04 PM »
http://www.somethingawful.com/

Stan's review of Mario Tennis: Power Tour made Somethingawful's "Worst Gaming Articles" list. Apparantly it was cited for fanboyism, something which I never much considered appropriate for the staff of Planetgamecube as they all seem very level headed.

However, I suppose this had to be mentioned, and this looked like the best board to do it in (when considering the conversation that might follow). I can say I was very shocked when I saw the site referenced.

It's funny how Ty picked the two games of this gen most deserving of a perfect score plus jungle beat.

I did notice a lot of high nintnedo scores, but a lot of them deserve it .  Of course, a lot of the games up there didn't deserve the score they got (Mario Pinball, POKEMON CHANNEL?)  If we take games just publised by Nintnedo- not developed- we get more low scores.  Star Fox Assault, Polarium, Trace Memory....some of those up there were developed by someone else, I think, just shut up

But still, not all nine's, so THERE.

It's because I can't read

In general, I think there's a little bit of score inflation on PGC, even in my own reviews (and I'm a harsh bastard sometimes). I think it scores make sense, though, if you know the reviewer. And we usually get games we actually want to review, unless we are "taking one for the team" and reviewing a likely crappy game. Jeff and Aussie Ben are hilariously awesome at this, and I am also the go-to "Hamtaro" guy around here.

Like, I pretty much always skip out on core Nintendo games now, and you probably won't see me reviewing them unless they are one of the more intense ones like Smash Bros or Mario Kart. I can tell guys like Jonny love Zelda and Metroid, though, so if you think "you're a guy like Jonny", you'll probably love them. They're just too dull and easy for me, so I don't agree with those review scores, myself.

Similarly, I couldn't wrap my head around the validity of Rick, very much a non-fight-game expert, giving SCII a 10, until I figured out that it's a perfect purchase for "guys like Rick." (Although it's probably good enough that everyone should buy it since it's like $10-$20 everywhere now.) I probably would have given it an 8.5 or something, because blah blah blah in-depth fight game stuff blah blah blah.

If one person, or even just a small group, reviewed ALL the games, the average score given out would be way lower. This is exactly what goes on in print mags and what happened all the time on IGN back when I used to read it (like eight years ago) - I remember being super miffed about low scores given to obscure or more-or-less niche games that I loved. It's because the reviewer just isn't interested in that kind of game. I used to get pissed off all the time, like when some game mag would give Gunbird 2 like 3/10 or when tardbucket Doug Perry would give a really uninformed review of KI Gold. I think that's why Zosha rated Naruto 2 like, a seven, and I gave Naruto a 9 or 9.5 or somesuch.

So, actually, I guess people sticking to reviewing only the kind of games that they actually like is a good thing since a reader will presumably only read reviews of games he's interested in. Lucky for Zelda fans, I probably won't be buying nor reviewing the next one.

If anybody's interested, I could probably review my entire GC library real quick. I think it would be enlightening or hilarious.

I know I might be breaking the serious discussion rule here but I really do like talking about our reviews at length

And cos ur dum lol

But good work in identifying the prentious Darwinia review. Seriosuly jsut because this game has come from an independant developer reviewers are swooning all over it. It's a halfarsed RTS but without the strategy and just grinding.

And Ty. Please amuse us with your GC library review.

Oooh, I've been just waiting for this thread.  I just want to say, I'm defintely not a fanboy of Nintendo.

In my opinion, Super Mario Sunshine 7.5 at BEST.  .

Mario Party?  Well, let's just say I will not opt to review those ever.  (I prefer Karaoke parties).

And I totally agreed with IGN's 7.5 of Mario Kart Double Dash (though I would have probably been much harsher in my review).  Mario Kart DS, though, is another story (love, love, love it).

I'm the sports editor so I figured picking Mario Tennis Power Tour was my job.  I hate tennis and I had no desire to play this game at all.  But I did, and wow, I'm glad I did.

To me, it is that good.  You want justification for my score?  Read the review.

That said, the SA article was hilarious.  And hey, I've gained some instant notoriety out of it, too.  But to accept his criticisms would be accepting that I'm some sort of Nintendo fanboy.  I can swear to Holy Heaven that I'm not, but I'm new here, so I'll let you guys be the judge of that.

Obviously many of my favorite games have been Nintendo games, or else I wouldn't be here, but I in no way think they're perfect, nor do I think every game is worth a purchase.

Haha, and with that post the ignorance going around the internet about this article has been brought to light.

There is no serious discussion going on here

It's not like people like Nintendo games just because they are Nintendo fans, people are Nintendo fans because they like their games, games such as Mario Tennis Power Tour. There's a reverse of cause and effect going around that only makes everything worse.

However in the case of this article it's just someone with nothing else going for them and too much time on their hands doing the only thing they can do, try to be funny. All he does though is criticise, I was disappointed with the lack of funny. GET A REAL JOB!

See, I can generalise too!
