In a recent talk with Famitsu, Aonuma confirms that Zelda is not a Princess in Skyward Sword.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/27025

Eiji Aonuma, producer of Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, discussed Zelda's role in the story of the game as not being that of a princess:

"She's not a princess this time which is something I'll pretty much have to put forth right now in order to talk about this title.” He then continues by saying that “She’s a childhood friend, but she goes away in the midst of the game and it's Link's job to search for her."

This makes sense when coupled with news that the game’s timeline will predate Ocarina of Time, leaving open the possibility that the story will somehow explain the origin of the Hyrulian Dynasty.

Aonuma also pointed out that this change will also affect how the games story plays out.  "This game's plot is something like a school drama, you could say. The flying sequence at the E3 demo is Link competing against his classmates. One of them looks kind of a like a bad guy, as you saw, and he shows up in other ways in the game too, since he has a major thing for Zelda."

Okay.  I'm hoping this is a "lost in translation" kind of thing.  I don't need some Zelda: Other Z thing going here.

A school Drama like Utena.

The Master Sword will be pulled From Zelda.

On a side note I'm going to put the first Zelda at the end of the timeline since the master sword is in a grave

I'm waiting for a Fifth Element like Zelda were you have to pull the master sword out of some opera singing monster and save tingle, a popular radio host.

I'm assuming he's just relating the character relationships to a familiar trope.

This SO means that SS comes just after Minish Cap. No princess Zelda? No Triforce? No Kingdom of Hyrule? This just about confirms it all... At least I think it does...

If she's still a damsel in distress that exists only to be saved (as seemingly is almost always the case), does it really matter if she's a Princess or not?

It might be a different kind of excitement if Nintendo made it more personal. Then again, the a previous time Nintendo tried to make something personal in a story didn't turn out all to well.

While I haven't read them myself, this sounds similar to Harry Potter? Throw in the fact that your playing a flying game to chase after a gold object like in HP and obviously there's the fantasy element. If they market it more like that, maybe Nintendo can pull some of that huge fanbase

I guess she won't be "Princess Zelda" anymore, she'll just be "Zelda"

Kinda cool, I like the concept, they really are doing things different this time around.
