No, it's not possible to use other region's VC cards. I once entered a card number wrong and got a "This card is not for your region" error. Do you really think Nintendo would let free trade eat its EU overcharge?

KDR_11k, I didn't mean point cards but CREDIT cards. I know point cards won't work.
But like IceCold said, I can always try I guess!

If there was ONE game on the Wii Shop Channel today that you'd buy and gift to somebody else using the Wii-Gift feature, which would it be?

Sorry; maybe if I'd been able to get past the first level I'd have better feelings. What aren't platformers more forgiving?

I couldn't understand what the other two games were. I just know one of them is for TG-16.

Does anyone else refer to use the remote for NES games over the classic controller?  I noticed this especially in SMB3 - So much of the game requires holding down a and b at the same time which is a little awkward with the classic controller due to how these buttons are positioned relative to your right thumb.  The remote (I actually prefer it with the slip cover/condom - I have big hands and the cover makes it more comfortable for me to hold) just seems way better to me in this regard.

I do. I don't even want to take the effort to plug in the classic controller when the wiimote is right there in my hands already.

Yeah, I wish we had customizable button bindings for NES and Megadrive games, possibly others too. Nintendo's insistence on A and B being separate and not meant to be hit at once is really annoying.

That is cool - I considered buying one until I realized
a. I shouldn't be in such a rush to part with my hard-earned $19.95
b. NES controllers were made in the 1980s, before scientists invented rounded corners.  Rectangular prism -> not the most comfortable design

The SNES is the one that needs a port the least, the SNES controller is practically identical to the Wii classic controller.

Today's Retro Roundup features Virtual Essentials: Games You Need.  It's basically a list of the games released in the first year of the VC's life that are deemed as "must own".  Here's the list:
Quote

   * ActRaiser
   * Bonk's Revenge
   * The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
   * Gunstar Heroes
   * Paper Mario
   * Sin & Punishment
   * Soldier Blade
   * Streets of Rage 2
   * Super Mario Bros. 3
   * Super Metroid
   * Tecmo Bowl
   * Wonder Boy in Monster WorldIgnoring of of the obvious omissions (where the hell are Super Mario World, Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time?) there are a couple of strange choices for this list.

ActRaiser's not surprising, considering how much they love it on Retronauts, but what's Soldier Blade doing on the list?  I'm not a shump historian, but aren't R-Type and Gradius III generally considered better games?  Wonder Boy?  Seriously?  It seems like this list focuses more on assembling a wide variety of games from numerous systems and less on naming off the best games the VC has to offer.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I think the highlight of this week's Retro Roundup is that they finally caught up with all those titles they missed out on!  They now cover every VC game yet released.

I'm quite surprised they don't recommend Sonic 3 and not because they figure that a version with Knuckles will be released down the line but rather that they don't like it.  I've never heard anyone sh!t on Sonic 3.  The general concensus is typically that the four Genesis games and Sonic CD are THE Sonic games to play.

Oddly enough they have no Sonic games represented on their essentials list.  Bonk but no Sonic?  I imagine the absence of other Mario and Zelda titles is that they only want one game from each series so they picked their favourite.  This is a good list to get someone started and then based on what games they liked they would probably instinctively check out of the others in the series.  No point telling a newbie to play SMB3 and SMW when if he likes SMB3 he'll naturally become interested in SMW, and if he doesn't like SMB3 he's not going to like Mario period.

It'll be come stickied again if they start releasing good games on a normal basis.  But I do have one question.  The baseball game for the Neo Geo looks decent.  I loved Ken Griffey Jr. for the SNES but I still own that.  Is the Neo Geo one similiar?  Better?  Okay, I lied about the one question.  In addition does it play over component cables?  Because I'm not going to unhook my cables just to play a game.

I have no idea if it works over component cables but Baseball Stars 2 is great and it is somewhat similar to Ken Griffey Jr.  In fact I think the Griffey team admitted that the Baseball Stars games were an influence.   I personally think it's better.  The only slight issue is that it's strictly an arcade game so a lot of the customization found in a console sports game isn't there.  In terms of gameplay though it's one of the best games I've ever played.
