Post by: NWR_pap64 on September 13, 2011, 11:59:09 PM

The creators of Golden Sun return to work on Mario's latest tennis game.

Camelot, best known for their work on the Golden Sun series, is developing Mario Tennis for the 3DS, which was unveiled at last night's Nintendo 3DS Press Conference.

Camelot developed both Mario Golf and Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Advance, and GameCube. They also worked on the New Play Control version of Mario Power Tennis and We Love Golf for Wii.

Mario Tennis 3DS is scheduled for release in 2012. It hasn't received an official title.

Awesome.  Their Gamecube Mario sports games are the cat's pajamas.  I hope Wii U gets a Camelot Mario Golf that has an option for traditional power bar controls in addition to the nifty "put the controller's screen on the ground" that Nintendo has shown off.

Nice. I hope they will make an RPG mode too.

This is so exciting. Their Mario sports games were always so much fun (much more fun that Mario Sports Mix). Can't wait for this!

As long as there isn't a boring RPG aspect to it. I grew kinda tired of the GBA sports games dragging along.

I'm glad about this, but I won't get hyped unless their is a rpg mode like MT:Power Tour and MT GBC.

Not only was that the best part of the GBC and GBA Mario sports games, it was also completely optional. It's like the pointer controls in RE4 Wii, where they were the biggest and best reason to buy that version of it, but you could also play without them if you're crazy enough to want to.

I don't recall the GBC game having any modes other than an exhibition match that you could play with Mario characters.

It certainly did, unless you mean that's all you can do outside the RPG mode, in which case I'm not sure. It definitely had the RPG mode, though, as I sunk a ridiculous amount of time into it. As I've said elsewhere, it's my favorite handheld game ever.

My point was that the RPG mode wasn't really optional, because it's basically the entire game and you can't even use Mario characters for it. There are no tournamnets or side games like Ring Shot that can be played with Mario characters, everything is played by some generic kid.

I liked the gameplay and the ideas behind it, but I was disappointed to discover that it wasn't really MARIO Tennis.

Ah, my mistake, I read your post the wrong way. You meant that there weren't any modes you could play with Mario characters except the exhibition, not that the game only had the exhibition mode which was played with Mario characters.

Ideally, this new one will combine the content of the prior handheld and console Mario Tennis games, so it will have the RPG mode as well as other modes for the Mario characters that were in the console games.

Ah, I can see that, I should have phrased that in a way that was more clear.

Yeah, this could be an awesome game if they combined the console and handheld styles into one. It could have a sort of story mode like the GBC game where you go through and power up the Mario character of your choosing, then after you build them up to max level you can play all the tournaments and side games like the ones featured in the console games. As Mario Super Sluggers has shown me, there's a lot of potential in a story mode for a Mario sports game, and since this one will be on a handheld instead of a home system, and therefore will be played primarily in single player instead of multiplayer, it's a good title to expand on the single player aspects.

Well we all know you should just pick Daisy since she'll level up the best :P
