One useful feature that was missed in the overview is the set of O-Powers that you can provide for other players (or yourself).  It's a good way to help out your friends and random players around the world.   I like giving out experience bonuses and capture percentage boosts.

The game Fairway Solitaire on PC/Mac/iOS/Android was a big hit by combining solitaire with golf, and it was also really fun, so I am looking forward to Solitiba since it seems to be similar.

I just wanted to point out that Rytmik is an exception: it's a pretty good download.  However, it's not a game.

"I don't think anything has been quite like Field Climber before. "

It's based on an old Japanese arcade and PS1 series called Gussun Oyoyo.  It was released in US arcades in the early '90s as "Risky Challenge".

As an interesting side note, it's a Nintendo-published game developed by a third party in the United States (Big Fish Games). Isn't that a first? All of the other Nintendo-published games have been developed by Japanese third-party developers.

Oh, yeah, I also liked the news that Wii Music videos can be recorded. I assume they can be shared somehow, as well. If not directly through Wii Music, then through video capture on a computer. That would really help sales if direct-to-video-site capabilities were included. People would make tons of videos.

I really enjoyed the Wii Music demo, because it's the kind of fun social game I can pull a lot of friends in for. Since it doesn't have any guide, we can just mess around with the music. Although some people are saying that the game plays itself, that's not true at all. You can tell from the video how different positions of the controls and different timings of button presses clearly affect how the music is played.

Other than Wii Music, and the MotionPlus possibilities... I'm not too excited about anything shown in any of the conferences this year. That Resistance 2 demo for PS3 was good graphically, but laughable gameplay-wise. I'm not interested in playing any game in which I can survive getting thrown through multiple skyscrapers, but I can't survive gunshots.

I hope it's as cool as the old Amiga game "4D Sports Boxing". I love stylized boxing games. 4D Sports Boxing had pretty funny facial animations for a game that rendered what seemed like less than 200 polygons.

So the most important question for me is: if an NES version of a game (say, Bubble Bobble...) has already been released on the VC, will there be no release of an SMS version if one exists, even if the alternate version is better? I sure hope they'll allow multiple releases, though I doubt they'd want to promote a non-Nintendo-console-related release. :-(

I won't buy any track-and-field game for the DS unless the Konami pencil trick works with the stylus.

TalkBack / RE:DS and Wii Designed to Change Stereotypes
« on: January 06, 2008, 03:59:39 PM »
Cell phones won't be a major threat until they can standardize on operating systems, capabilities, and interfaces. At one company I worked for, cell phone games had to be tested on dozens of different, popular models. Nintendo's testing requirements are very stringent. It would cost them way too much in both money and quality to test a single game for many of the most popular cell phone configurations. Nintendo's about profit, after all. So are many other companies, and that's why many companies won't make serious investments in high-quality software until the development and testing becomes easier. (Disclaimer: I am not implying that company I worked for didn't make a high-quality game... ;-) )

Think of it this way: if you're going to make a mass-market cell phone game cheaply, you have to make a game that is playable on a phone that is two or three years old. The people with the newest cell phones won't care about your game unless you spend more money to develop an improved version for the new phones. And other than the iPhone, there are no high-end cell phones that exist in large enough quantities to make a decent profit with after applying development costs. On the other hand, the DS is a single worldwide platform, and there are tens of millions of them on the planet now. I can't see any reason why Nintendo would have to be worried about the loss of market share to new cell phone models unless the iPhone or some other model (or a group of models that share an operating system and specifications) hits 15+ million units sold. It's simply a matter of available population vs. quality control vs. development cost.

Of course, Nintendo is based in Japan, where cell phone specifications are probably more standardized. Developing Japan-only cell phone games could be slightly profitable for them. However, doing so won't bring help bring them much profit in a worldwide cell phone market compared to the money factory that is the DS.

Your Bubble Bobble Part 2 cartridges (if you have any) will still be valuable, at least until that's also released on the VC. Last time I checked, Bubble Bobble Part 2 cartridges were well over $100.

Ugh... that's unfortunate. Nethack is the hardest to learn of all the roguelikes I've ever played. I didn't really like it, either, and if I had played it first, I would have been turned off on the genre myself! TOME is pretty simple in comparison, control-wise. Other than eat (E), drink (q, for quaff), open (o), use skill (m, for magic), a (aim wand), z (zap rod), and the direction keys, there's little else to remember in TOME for a beginner. TOME also has a decent window system, so you can keep a lot of information off the main screen, and it has several tile sets available, so you don't have to look at ASCII all the time. You don't have to remember letters for creatures or items because they all have distinct images.

Best rogue-like ever, gameplay-wise. (Not so much for the graphics...)

I'm going to wait for a couple more reviews, but thanks to this review, I'm leaning towards buying it. The low price helps, and I am an old Starfleet Command player, so this game caught my eye early. I had hoped this game was similar to Birth of the Federation, and it sounds slightly similar, so I may like it. Too bad about the lack of multiplayer, though.

Mario, hearsay is not the same as actual data.  Last week, the DS and Wii had the most sales in most territories.

Well, it has been a few months... no, I'm not sure. *blush* I'll check.

Yeah, you're right and I'm wrong. Sorry about that! I should be more careful about what I say before checking the facts. I'm actually pretty embarrassed... I'm usually much better about such things.

As an old Panzer General player, I would like to know what the differences are between Panzer General and Panzer Tactics. Panzer Tactics looked a heck of a lot like Panzer General in screenshots I saw. Is anybody experienced with both games to explain?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Glory Days 2?
« on: November 29, 2007, 11:19:19 AM »
I liked the game (and Glory Days, aka Super Army War) a lot. A lot of people are calling it a Choplifter variant, but it's really a hybrid of the old Apple II games Rescue Raiders and Wings of Fury. Unfortunately, I haven't played it in months because the L trigger on my DS broke, but since I recently got a new DS, I can start playing it again.

Basically, you have to destroy the enemy units before they can advance on your base. You also protect your units so they can reach the enemy base. In the beginning, the units are generated automatically, but eventually you can call them up on demand (if you have the resources).

There's all sorts of ways you can fight. You can use a helicopter, which has great anti-tank weaponry, or you can use an airplane, which has great anti-air capability and still packs a very good anti-tank weapon. You can load infantry into a helicopter and paradrop them to take over buildings and harass the enemy, you can build a bunch of tanks to hold off the enemy armies, call in airstrikes to blanket an area with bombs, call in massive paradrops, rescue civilians to earn more money, and more. There's also a level design tool.

If anybody hated landing airplanes  in Super Army War, you'll be glad to know that they simplified it a lot. It's a lot harder to crash while landing now.

I have three problems with Glory Days 2:

1) my hand hurts after a while when playing it. Since one has to press left and right a lot during the game, my thumb tires. I had the same problem with Super Army War. In Glory Days 2, you can use the stylus as an alternate control form, but then my other hand got tired from gripping the stylus so much.

2) It's missing a lot of the good stuff from Rescue Raiders. I hope the features go into Glory Days 3. Basically, in Rescue Raiders you could destroy the buildings, but it let you build engineers to repair them, too. There were more building types, such as MG bunkers, extra helipads, and command centers, so there was more strategy in holding territory rather than just blowing up stuff. Infantry was much more useful in Rescue Raiders.

3) It uses a PASSWORD system for the campaign instead of save data. Why?!?!
