Oh how I wish these SNES FF classics could come stateside!  The Gamepad would be PERFECT for them.

This will help WiiU sales in Japan for sure.

With the way the system's sales seem to be rising worldwide, the outcome of WiiU may not be as bleak as it you may think it may be after all.  Once upon a time 3DS was in the same position and its fate looked bleak, and now look at it.  WiiU can do the same.

Regardless of what some of you think, I still stand behind what I thought before:  WiiU DOES have a chance to regain its lost momentum in Japan AND attract third parties again.  Even if PS4 does OK there, if WiiU consistently outsells it, then we may see a return of third party development.  Not a whole lot, but still better than the past three consoles.  XBox One will probably die there though, forcing some developers to port their titles to WiiU.

Yeah, I'm still holding out hope that 3rd parties will come around on the Wii too since it's the #1 selling system of the previous generation. Keep that candle lit, they will find their way home eventually.

You mean WiiU.  It is very hard to keep the candle lit with all that has happened this year and with the constant people telling one to give up hope, but to be honest, giving up is far easier and ultimately less rewarding than having faith.  Also WiiU is not the only next gen system to have had a bad first year or so.  Once upon a time, DS, 3DS, and even PS3 were all in the same boat in Japan.  Nowadays people act like those bad first years never happened.  All three were supported by 3rd parties.  There's no reason to assume the same won't happen for WiiU.

If this is a trend upwards for the Wii U then it's nice, but if this is a spike then it's still in trouble. It's too early to say if it's recovering.

Either way this IS the highest WiiU sales have ever been in Japan all year.  Honestly, though, I don't see it being just another spike.  With Mario 3D being marketed there and that guaranteed to push systems, I'd say the system is getting back on the right track there.

It seems to me that some of you have completely given up on WiiU ever getting support from Japanese third parties, and that's fine.  I, however, will not.  I still believe there's a chance.

But what if WiiU manages to come out of its rut in Japan and become the only successful console during this gen?  Then what?  Not an attacking question, just speculation.

It's also important to remember, too, that neither PS4 nor XBox One will be launching in Japan this year, and aside from the two SE titles (one of which still has a chance of coming to WiiU, as it hasn't been ruled out yet), I honestly don't see much compelling software to attract Japanese gamers for PS4.  If anything, that console may sell less than PS3 and for all we know, WiiU could very well be miles above it.  Of course this is speculation, but honestly, I see WiiU recovering and PS4 having trouble in Japan, even with FFXV and KH3.

WiiU WILL get that fanbase eventually.  It's already on its way to recovery.  You can think otherwise if you wish, but I prefer to be optimistic.

you know that MGS V is being developed primarily for the PS4/Xbone, right? It'd be like putting MGS4 on the Wii.

Except MGSV is coming out to PS3/XBox 360 as well.  So that doesn't really count.  But unlike broodwars, I don't think it's too late for third party support to come back to WiiU.  Especially if XBox One and PS4 suffer a similarly slow start.  There actually WAS a leak, interestingly, for METAL GEAR SOLID when Miiverse was first leaked, and Konami WAS approached by Nintendo to create a MGS for WiiU, so.... there's still time.

Hopefully this game sells well and we get more third party games, especially new ones from Sqaure Enix.
I don't think Square-Enix has too high of expectations for this particular port.  After all, it was previously released two years ago, and a lot of people won't be rushing out to buy it.

That said, whether we get future support from Square-Enix or not does not necessarily depend on this game.  Yes, it would be nice to show support, but something tells me that as WiiU sales continue to grow, S-E will be forced to look again at WiiU and maybe perhaps port some of their more ambitious projects onto it (I'm looking at you, Kingdom Hearts III, although  I think we may eventually get it).  They did say (sorta) they were OK with how DQX fared in Japan and are going out of their way to give it another extension pak this December (way after this game launches).  So I wouldn't take this as a sign that S-E will up and ditch WiiU after these two.  If they were upset with how DQX fared on WiiU, we wouldn't even be getting the expansion pak.  Nor this.  Period.

14
I think we'll eventually see a Tales on WiiU.  Just because they don't have plans for one right now doesn't mean it will never come.  If it DOES come, though, it'll probably about halfway into the WiiU's cycle, when the system starts doing better.  And Namco IS working with Nintendo on SSB4, so it's not entirely implausible.

15
I am going to go out on a limb and say that based on what has transpired thus far it appears that Sony could recapture their throne and be the number one game company of this generation. This is why Nintendo is going to have to be aggressive in order to maintain whatever edge they have over Sony, especially in Japan. The ball is really in Sony's court at this point and it will be interesting to see how Nintendo and Microsoft react to Sony and the Playstation 4.

Sony may be formidable, but I still say Nintendo has a chance of succeeding.

16
I wouldn't be surprised if Monster Hunter 4 was announced for the Wii U considering that Wii U sales are not that healthy in Japan and the fact that MH3 Ultimate sold very well for the Wii U.

http://wiiudaily.com/2013/05/monster-hunter-3-wii-u/

There might be a very good chance that Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 will be announced for the Wii U considering that those franchises are popular in Japan and could potentially spur Wii U sales in that country.

MH4 WiiU I absolutely see happening.  That would give the system a much needed push.  And yes, there IS a chance for both FFXV and KH3 to come to WiiU, but Square-Enix has yet to comment on them.  They didn't exactly rule it out.  I DO think it's pretty silly that they are planning to put it on XBox One even in Japan, though; that decision is going to be absolutely disastrous!  XBox has always done poorly in Japan, and there's no way these games will sell on that system.  XBone will probably crash and burn, too.  So what to do?  Port it to WiiU, of course!

17
In spite of the circumstances regarding the third party support and rough start, I'd say this is a great lineup for WiiU this year.  Yes, I would have liked more third party titles too (although something tells me we MIGHT eventually get Kingdom Hearts 3 in the future), but the selection is not TOO bad.  It's only in the context of Sony and Microsoft that is seems to be otherwise.

But Nintendo's lineup has some software that will push systems off the shelves.  That's what the system really needs.  The more systems sold, the more games we get from all sides:  first party, third party, indies.

Anyway, I am very much looking forward to many of these titles.  I've already preordered a whole bunch of them.

Now complain about Rayman and the lack of 3rd party support.

Iwata is actually aware of the latter situation, as he mentioned in his latest Q & A.  He's working hard to rectify that.

In addition, we have started working to expand the range of software developers for Wii U, as I announced in the Corporate Management Policy Briefing in January. As I mentioned just before, the development challenges for home console games selling for around $50-$60 have increased significantly. Around the time when I first wrote a program for a home console game 30 years ago, two developers, including me, completed it in only three months. Things have changed dramatically since then, and we therefore need to expand the range of software developers. We made two announcements at GDC held in San Francisco in late March. One is "Nintendo Web Framework," which is the development environment used for "Wii Street U powered by Google" I mentioned earlier and some VOD services available for Wii U. The number of developers who can use versatile web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript is probably more than 100 times larger than that of the current software developers for dedicated gaming machines. We would like them to create software for our console. "Wii Street U powered by Google" was actually developed by a very compact team whose core members had never developed games for dedicated gaming machines. As I have already mentioned, the application has been and will be updated constantly by a small development team, which means that the development environment has enabled us to significantly reduce development challenges. Since our announcement at GDC, we have received inquiries about it from hundreds of new development companies and individuals. We believe there will be something novel and fascinating from their development work, thereby expanding the range of the software available for Wii U.[/size]The other thing we announced was that developers can now use Unity, a cross-platform video game engine, for Wii U development, and we have started offering it to the developers. There are over a million Unity developers, including many in developing countries where the business of dedicated gaming machines is not prosperous. We would like to create opportunities for these developers to have their games available for Wii U. We hope that these actions to expand the range of software developers, in addition to the functions of Nintendo eShop and payments through e-money I mentioned before, will give us new business possibilities.
As you stated, it is a fact that some software development companies assume that Wii U is not powerful enough. On the contrary, some developers say in interviews that Wii U has a different architecture from other consoles and that, when utilized in the right way, it can perform well. At the moment, there is a great deal of contradictory information. Nintendo is required to make more efforts to dispel such a misconception. In fact, some software companies are actively supporting Wii U and others are not. It is important to have supportive companies enjoy successful sales of a game and feel that their decision to develop something for Wii U was correct. We understand that this cannot possibly be achieved overnight and it may sound unconvincing under the current slow sales of Wii U. We would like to work to revitalize the Wii U market and show you favorable results for third-party software from this summer.

In a rare instance, this game cancellation is actually not a bad thing altogether.  Especially if the final product really was that terrible.  No way do we wanna see software of such abominable quality plague a system like WiiU.

Luckily the MiiVerse count for the game, thus far, is high.  Meaning that there IS interest in the game.  I'm calling it:  the digital sales are doing the job, not the physical ones.

I think square enix is pleased with the sales so far, if not, they would have mentioned it in the press release rgarding the sales of tomb raider and other square titles. I also think that dragon quest is a title that will see its return in the long run and square knew this from the getgo due to taking the franchise into new grounds. Another thing is that square developed DQX with in house assest and man power, unlike titles such as tomb raider that needed a massive budget and in turn massive sales in order to break even, which is not the case for DQ.

So DQX has basically already recovered its cost, thanks to the Wii's 600,000+ sales.  The 50,000 or so that the WiiU port will clear thus far is probably just loose change.  IT couldn't have cost that much to upgrade the game.

Doubt the DL sales are going be much higher.  Most WII U owners--most likely already owned an WII and all those that wanted to play DQX most likely did already.  There wasn't much new to warrant spending $40 (upgrade cost) while still paying $12 monthly.

For $40 you'll get a slighty shaprer image (WII U has better AA), some sound tracks, an bonus in game item, and off-screen gamepad play?  I know better ways to blow $40 on.

--------------------------

Of course I will never have to worry about DQX since it's never going be localized to begin with.  I waited 5 years for this too :( .

You never know.  I think if S-E wants this title to make more money, they'll have to localize it.

There was also the message from Iwata-san that he was going to work with developers to publish their titles stateside.  DQX must be one of them.  Don't jump to conclusions just yet.

I have read a couple of articles including this one; http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/04/dragon-quest-x-wii-u-has-weak-launch-at-japanese-retail/, that are calling the launch of dragon quest a bad one based on a two day week. Sales were around 33,000 which is not a great number, but certain websites are calling doom because of the low sales, which again, it only covers two days. These numbers do not take into consideration digital sales neither the reminder of the week; in which I am sure the sales numbers will surpass 200,000 copies easily. It really bothers me, because every Wii U news that comes around journalist are taking it to an extreme, a ridiculous extreme in my opinion. I know the game is not pulling DS numbers, but gaming websites are bashing the game sales way too early to call the game a failure. I am sure sales for this game are going to improve with time and adoption rates, especially when the games hits outside of Japan.

Don't pay attention to the media.  They'll say anything to twist the actual "truth".

And besides, the sale rate was 60-80% of the stock.  It didn't fail.  It just didn't sell in the same way as the previous DQ ones.  And it DID boost the sales.  Maybe only minimally, but an increase is an increase.

That said, I don't really see this selling 200,000, especially if the shipment was only about 50k or so.  But who knows.  Maybe the sales are indeed higher on the eShop version.  We'll have to wait and see how this goes.

Whether the game sales pick up or not, the real money is in the subscriptions and the digital money.  So my guess is that it's already made its money back.  Square-Enix will continue to support WiiU, and hopefully not with another MMORPG.

As for this game coming outside of Japan, that isn't a certainty just yet, but if Square-Enix wants to make more money on this, they'll have to bring it stateside.  There was also Iwata's declaration to help third-party developers publish their titles stateside.  This will probably be one of them.

I was afraid that DQX wouldn't sell, and I hate to see that I'm right. I'm not right very often, so, it sucks when I don't want to be and it happens.
Actually, DQX didn't do that badly.  The sales represent about 60-80% of the stock.
If that's true then at least Square didn't expect it to sell that well. But I think people expected it to be more of a much-needed boost for the Wii U, because the mainline series usually sells a lot more than this. I know why it didn't of course, but, still, this is why people had higher expectations.

Understandable in every way.  Even if DQX's physical sales aren't much, don't forget that the real money for this title comes from the subscription fees.  And of course, there's also the eShop digital sales -- after all it's cheaper on eShop, and there are discounts for simple upgrades.  Why the charts didn't report any of this is beyond me.  But I bet it's doing much better on that front.  Either way, it won't be the last WiiU title we'll see from S-E.  The more units Nintendo can sell, the more third parties will commit to it.

And who knows, maybe DQXI will be traditional AND a 3DS/WiiU simultaneous release.  I CAN see it, provided Nintendo continues its pursuing of 3rd parties.

I'm not overly surprised either about DQX sales.  I haven't heard a compelling reason for current players to upgrade.
I'Ts HD!??!!??!'??!???!

I imagine the eShop sales for this are even better; DQX, after all, CAN be purchased for half the price at eShop AND there is a discount for people who already have the Wii version to upgrade it.  So many people are blowing this out of proportion, hence the whole "DQX tanks on WiiU in Japan" media blitz that is happening.
