Game Informer Reveals New Revolution Game
« on: April 07, 2006, 12:53:45 PM »
Revolution shooter, Red Steel, screens are out in this month's Game Informer.  Updated with new info.

In their recently released May issue, Game Informer reveals the first screen shots of Ubisoft’s Red Steel, a newly announced game for the Nintendo Revolution.  Based on the screen shots, Red Steel is a first person shooter, but there are few specifics on controls.    Aiming is done by pointing the Revolution controller and moving the crosshairs on the screen.  One interesting—though not entirely surprising—aspect demonstrated is the ability to change the angle of your gun by simply rotating the Revolution controller.  Pictures also reveal that the nunchaku attachment will be used in gameplay.

Red Steel also promises a mixture of swordplay along with the firefights.  The action in the screenshots takes place in what appears to be a casino.  Living up to the title, the enemies’ jackets, the tiling on the floor, the walls, and what are possibly slot machines are all primarily red in tone.  Other details are scarce, but we will remain on top of this story (and all other Revolution announcements) as they develop.

Update

More information has made its way to PGC regarding Red Steel.  The Revolution game takes even greater advantage of the three dimensional controller movement.  Moving the controller toward the screen allows the character to push over objects, while pulling  it back toward you is the reload function.  Twisting the controller will allow you to lean around corners for extra sneakiness.

As far as integration of gameplay and story, throughout the game your character learns new moves from his Japanese senseis.  If your character disrespects either sensei (in particular, walking away while they are talking) they will respond angrily.  The extent of their anger, though, is unknown at this point.

Also, you earn the respect of Yakuza bosses by sparing their lives when defeating them in  a sword fight.  Photographs demonstrate that the sword is held in the two-handed samurai style.  One photo shows a player holding the Revolution controller behind his head with the corresponding screen shot displaying the hilt being held up to the character's face.

While details remain scarce, there is mention of multiplayer.  Unfortunately, it remains unknown if it will be available for online play.

Boy, I sure hope these devs realize that this control interface has the potential to do so much more that just FPS after FPS after FPS....I think we are about to witness a disturbing trend of launch window FPS'.

It will be interesting to see if it feels more like a FPS or more like a classic light gun game. It looks (based on the screens) more like a light gun style game to me.

"holy crap, my blog has gotten 10,000 hits since i posted those scans. anyways, i just finished reading the actual article in game informer, and it says that the sword and guns can be twisted in your hand, by twisting the rev's remote. so you can shoot gangster style and block with the sword. also, there is split screen and online multiplayer planned, just no details yet. you can also jump over and take cover behind objects by moving the rev's remote towards a upturned table or a wall, and reload by pulling the remote back. by the way, they are ingame screenshots. this game is looking fecking hot as hell."

In the latest issue of Game Informer.

I found some pics of the pics (don't ask where).  Definately better than the Xbox.  I'm now tempted to buy that issue of GI if I ever see it.

Edit:  Ahh, somebody posted them I see.

I know I'm going to get slapped for this but I'm actually hoping for this to be a rail-shooter as opposed to a traditional FPS. Rail-shooters have never been big on consoles because they've relied on light-gun accessories and are generally no fun if played by the standard controllers but the REV could change that. I think fast-paced, arcade-style, rail-shooters are more apt to appeal to Nintendo's "non-gamer" target audience anyway. Just pick up the Rev-mote, aim, and shoot. We could see the rail-shooter genre go from appealing to a niche market to becoming mainstream.

No one's really concerned that Revolutio will lack games for non-gamers. It's the traditional kind of support that we need.

This sounds freaken awe4some and I can't wait to paly it.

I can already see people at best buy or whatever play this game and be amazed, and people play ps3 and be like meh
madden is the same thing just 25% more shine on the helmits, and grass that looks like fur and they will be like sorry that is pretty but the same game I played last year I'll get a revolution instead this feels new.

what is all this crap about rail shooters  the reason it never caught on is because that crap is broing after a hour.
First person shooters killed rail shooters 10 years ago and no going back now.

Sheesh ! What is next from you people, having PASSWORD SAVE instead of saving your progress  onto a memorycard/harddrive to be "oldschooL". whatever!!

sorry some things need to remain the past, why make so many advances in hardware technology with the controller  and make a game that has a ancient game engine.

Why play Tetris anymore we've made leaps and bounds beyond it...yet its still fun.  and thats all that matters.

I dont really want THIS game to be a rails shooter but a rails shooter would be MUCHO appreciated.

Anyways, this game looks amazing.  The more I read about it, the better it sounds.  Also I forget where I read it but they seemed to state that there would be online multiplayer in the game.  It just keeps getting better and better.
