Yeah, that totally sounds like Gundam Wing. I hate Gundam Wing. I guess only every second Gundam series are any good.

Every second? Wasn't the previous Gundam something like Seed or Seed Destiny?

Overall 00 is nice for keeping the tension up but there is just so much stupid and emo everywhere... Kinda like Geass except with a bit less Deus Ex Machina/Diabolus Ex Machina spam.

To think this is supposed to be the series that founded the real robot genre...

Reminds me, I was going to grab a new avatar out of Votoms.

I haven't seen GSD yet, I am still waiting for it to come out here in NZ. I would pretty much consider GS and GSD that same series, just different seasons. Or same "timelines". Maybe I should have said every 2nd timeslines are any good. Actually, most of Gundam is pretty rubbish. I wouldn't really know since I haven't seen a fair proportion of it. V Gundam is utter trash. I don't know why I finished watching that thinking it might get better.

I'm currently into Kinnikuman and it's sequal, Kinnikuman: Nisei. Nisei is known as Ultimate Muscle in the US, and it's considered the semi-good dub 4kids ever did, besides Pokemon.

Speaking of which, has anyone ever seen Sailor Moon: Abridged by Megami 33. Holy crap, that is hilarious. Megami 33 does an excellent impression of Serena and Luna from the dub. Unlike most abridged series, this one makes fun of the series itself, and the terrible dub dialog.

I think it's funny, Votoms is by no means outstanding but I enjoyed it a lot more than stuff like Geass and 00. Votoms is a really simple real robot anime (no deep plotlines or meanings, kinda like a Schwarzenegger movie) but it still manages to beat those hideously complex shows with all their emo crap. Just shows how much those modern shows suck when they're losing against a show from '83 simply because the old show lacks many of the things the new show has.

I liked Gundam Wing, but it was my first exposure to Gundam, so that probably has a lot to do with it.  My only gripes are that Relena starts out as such a loon and that the dub is so terrible.  Not only is the writing awkward, but some characters actually change voices between appearances.  Other than that, I've only seen something more than half of the original Gundam, a few miniseries in the UC timeline, and Gundam Seed.  I've seen most of G Gundam, but I don't really want to count that.  I don't spend much money on anime, so I only get to watch what the TV networks show.

Gundam Wing felt really DBZ like. Bunch of idiots calling their attacks. One of the enemies strategies for beating one of the five Gundams was to throw enough targets at it until it ran out of ammo. The fact these guys were fighting a revolution with only 5 mechs, indiscriminate fire, no teamwork as a 5 man band stereotype was just terrible. All in all, it felt like a bad Chinese knock off.

I felt Relena (The dual personality one right?) was the only thing good about it all because she was such a loon. Out of the whole show she was the only one that was remotely entertaining.

On another parallel note, GSD is suppose to be out here tomorrow as a box set, so happy me.

Short of torrenting the original Gundam, I not going to see it. However since SEED is pretty much a remake of the original, it's a bit redundant. However, I do love the slightly more simple designs of the early Gundams and the skirt wearing Doms are pretty amusing.

Dunno, I know an UC fanatic who hates everything Seed (recommends 08th MS team to everyone).

I think 00 also had a lot of "lol my powerlevel is over 9000, you can't hurt me" **** with the Gundams being completely invulnerable for most of the first season (though they still kept whining about being hit even though their mechs took zero damage). It seemed like the biggest threat to a pilot was his own idiocy (and possibly them cutting heir own wrists out of emoness).

Votoms is so much better with that...

A classic technique taken from Brannigan's Law.  :)

As I remember it, they were independently sent to Earth as terrorists and didn't really have a reason to work together until much later.  The story made enough sense to justify the really cool giant robot action, at least.

I think you're thinking of Lady Une, who once killed a man by dropping him from an airplane and then shooting him in the head.  Relena was the student who started out with a suicidal crush on Heero and eventually had a short stint as the queen of the world.

I liked the original quite a bit, but Cartoon Network pulled it after the September 11 attack and never showed it again.  They eventually showed the Teddy Bomber episode of Cowboy Bebop after skipping it that week, and it actually featured a terrorist blowing up buildings.  I'll never understand the way those people think.

The ratings on Gundam were low but they were contractually required to run it, the terrorists were used as a convenient excuse to drop it.

Ahh, thanks for the correction Party Bear. It has been quite a few years since I have seen it. I have no urge to go and refresh it. But killing a man like that takes CLASS.

I never thought that Wing ever justified the action seeing the action itself was retarded. The fact the protagonist was named Heero makes my brain bleed a little. The moment I heard his name, I knew it would be bad.

As for the original, the one really solid thing I love coming from it is the arcade game Zion VS Federation. That game was like crack for me for a while. I never did finish the game since the opponent starts button reading. However one could play at the arcade for like an hour on one credit as you keep beating people who challenge you. Good times. I would have so brought it if they had ported it to GC instead of those other retarded Gundam games.

That being said, I would love to watch the good UC stuff. Like the original and the direct sequels like Chars counterattack.

It's similar to how Batman turned out in some ways. With all it's diversity. The camp in early batman. Then the burton movies, followed by a couple of abortions and finally a return to form. However Gundam just cycles a lot faster and the camp to restricted to the funny SD stuff.

Oh believe me, the first series I watched was Gundam Wing and I was thinking WTF is this noise. **** Anime.

It was SEED that brought me back years ago when a friend loaned me his disks. I haven't looked back since. I don't really use the internet or any other forms of media to pick what I watch. I go by gut feeling sprinkled with a preview here and there, along whispers I hear on the net. I has produced one stinker with MEZZO DSA. a couple of, not bad but I wish it was a bit better, but so far I pretty much have the cream of the crop at least with the genres I like.

Don't go thinking I like big metal robots either. I only have SEED and some Patlabour movies (and now Neon Genesis which lives up to it's hype pretty well) that feature Giant robots at it's main draw. I admit though I have a slight bias when it comes to judging plane porn. Yukizake has some ugly as sin character designs and story is a big WTF. But seeing aircraft pulling insane maneuvers that have a (tiny) hint of plausibility is nice.

I will have a look at that game when I get a Wii. I can afford one now and all that but I would like to see Nintendo stabilize it's controller attachments. Also wait till I figure which country I will be in and be able to import an american Wii without hurting myself. I don't like the local gaming market too much and I do my best to support parts that I do like. Here it's big box retailers or EB. There is Trademe (NZ Ebay) but availability is of course spotty. I also have a backlog of games to play, so no real hurry.

Yes.  All too often, anime characters are named according to a silly scheme.  In this case it's numbers.  It's not as bad as crap like Allelujah Haptism, though.  ;)  So far the theme in Gundam 00 appears to be "anything completely retarded."

In Votoms it's supposedly greek letters but I find that kind of a stretch for two out of three (the names in question are Chirico, Fyana and Ypsilon).

But leaving the mechs aside, is everyone watching Today's 5-2 (Kyou no Go no Ni)?

I've been.  It's mostly boring and relies on awkwardness for comedy, but it's hard for any slice-of-life anime to have strong comedic surprise after seeing Azumanga (absolute joy).  To its credit, 5-2 character designs are adorable (until the guys are shown), tho not on the level of Ichigo Mashimaro.

I recently started to watch One Outs. It's like DeathNote in the sense that the main character is smart, but the series is all about Baseball. By the time I watched episode 8 all I thought was "holy ****. this guy plays on a completely different level mwuahahahahahahahahahah"... seriously.

also, Gundam 00 has NOTHING to do with Gundam Wing... neither does SEED to 0079.

When can I get my next Haruhi Suzimiya fix? Jesus it's been ages already.

Supposedly they scrapped the second season in favor of doing a "reboot" by taking the series in an original direction, which I guess makes sense considering it'd be impossible to do the second season properly (as they eliminated most of the paradox/time travel segments from the stories in the first season)...I'd be surprised if it didn't pop up sometime next year...

Oh, you haven't read any of them yet?  You're in for a treat...

I'm also watching Toaru Majutsu no Index, it alternates between funny and action. Removing fleas from a cat by electrocuting it!

It's fantastic so far...It has a very "Shakugan no Shana" feel to it (and ironically enough, the animation team behind it is the same)...

Anyone following the Naruto Manga?

You can find that topic somewhere in the Funhouse, I think...Personally I think it's still dragging...Just throw Naruto back into the mix, please!

Just finished watching Gundam SEED Destiny and WOW. I also went and read a number of reviews out there and for some reason there are a lot of haters. While I admit there are a number of flaws, the sum of the parts are greater than the whole. What were weaknesses at the start of the show become strengths.

However one thing I do agree on is that the ending was rushed. It made the Final Plus a must which in some ways a real shame.

In many ways Destiny does surpass the original, however a lot of that has to do with ones personal flavor. Both series, taken as a whole works brilliantly.

Well worth the wait and hard earned money.

Neon Evangelion on the other hand, while solid through out, slams in to WTF territory with it's last 2 episodes. Correct me if I am wrong, but I had heard that when they had originally made it they had effectively went over budget, hence the cluster **** at the end. At this point I am at a lost as to whether to continue and hunt down the extras, or simply to leave it there and move on.

Anybody care to share their thoughts on either titles?
