My Wii Tribute Animation
« on: October 20, 2006, 11:09:39 PM »
So, I made this animation over the past month showing different uses for video game characters using the wiimote.  700 pages is a lot to hand draw.  For now, I'm glad to be done, and I'm glad it came out pretty close to how I envisioned it as well, so that's cool.  It's wii related, so I wanted to know what you guys thought.  Thanks.

Matt that is really, really impressive.  The best thing about the animation is the direction you took the animation.  Keeping the notebook paper lines kept the animation looking like a child's dream...and doodle which was awesome.  And many of the transitions were very well done.

Nice selection of music as well.

BRAVO.

Wow, thanks you guys.  I really appreciate the responce.

As for how long it took me?  Easily past 70 hours.  Easily.  Probably closer to 80.  About 40 of that was spent drawing, and the other was spent piecing it together on my puter.  After Effects, Maya, Flash and more were all used to make this happen.  Considering I've never done hand animation before I'm quite pleased with the results.

Very good job on the animation, if I was nintendo I would probably use it. Only at the end throw in a animation of a game materialising and going in reverse from mario galaxy footage to tennis then fly right out the the consol and back to the a players hand controlling it all.

Wow, I expected a few people to dig this, but you guys have been awesome.  I just put a version up to Youtube, and here's hoping that the quality doesn't go to pot.  I forgot to mention, this was a video that was entered into a contest to win a Wii on IGN.  A user there hosted the contest and people came from everywhere to try and win.  The problem currently though, is that the host of the contest apparently doesn't have quicktime, so he hasn't seen it yet.  And apparently rather than downloading it is having me re-export into other formats, which is posing a bit of a challenge.  I'll keep you guys posted on the contest results as well.

Those of you that do have IGN accounts, check out Wingflyers constest on the Wii Boards.  There is some talent in that thread.

To the rest, wow, thank you so much.  I really didn't expect this kind of feedback.  At all.  I put it up on YouTube last night, tonight I have 16, 000 views.  16,000.  Dang.  It's about to hit the front page of Digg too.  My brother's server couldn't keep up with the demand (obviously), so we changed the link in the Digg article from being his site to YouTube.  Unfortunately, this killed the last set of people who Dugg me (Sorry Vudu, thanks for trying).    Here is the New Digg link  So far, we have 33 Diggs.  Just a few more and we'll hit the front page.  Thanks again everybody, I appreciate it.

VG, I agree, people on Joystiq were being awfully critical for no reason whatsoever, but what do you expect from internet geeks?

Anyway, I hope you win a Wii dude, and I hope Nintendo pays some attention and gives you a call, because that animation you did would grab my attention if I was just sitting on the couch watching TV.

Matt about how long did it take you to draw the pictures and do the animation? I remember back a few months ago when I was trying to create a crappy animation on flash with characters drawn on MS Paint. I think for a 3 second video it took me like 40 minutes lol. THe video was of a black dot pedestrian going accross the road and getting ran over .

There was much complaining on the board, to the point the topic got locked before I even saw the winners announced.  To be honest, I thought it was a joke thread, scolling down so far to see my entry, just based off of the internet response it got.  Oh well.  It's cool, I guess.

Here are the important parts to the rules too:
"2. You may use photoshop, video, drawings, animation, or other mediums for your entries. (NOTE: YOU CAN SUBMIT TWO PICTURES FOR REVIEW, IF YOU ARE SUBMITTING PICTURES.)

3. Your entries must use your favorite characters of videogames (NOT NECESSARILY NINTENDO CHARACTERS AND MORE THAN ONE CHARACTER CAN BE IN THE PICTURE DEPENDING ON HOW THE REMOTE IS USED OR SEVERAL CHARACTERS USING A REMOTE) using the Wii remote to play a game, using the remote to zap enemies, use your imagination. "

"I have been looking at the pictures herein and some are not making pictures according to the rules. (Using a remote does not mean standing there and doing nothing with it."

Well some of the artwork is amazing but you should of at least got 2 places higher, one terrible one was 5th place with Zelda and MM with "Wii". They weren't creative, and frankly I don't think much work was put into them!

You were robbed.

Of the ones I can see, I'd say the best two entries, quality wise, are easily yours and the Zelda video. And you deserved at least fourth (fourth is where I was like, 'okay, I can maybe see what he was thinking with one and three. And maybe two is really good, it's not loading. But a photoshopped image of Halo spartans playing Red Steel? Seriously? This is weekly photoshop contest territory.') I guess I can understand why you were placed so low - he couldn't see the quicktime video you sent him, and he obviously wanted the entries to feature video game characters more heavily. But even so.

I would've put "A Wiimote Adventure" and yours in first and second (not necessarily in that order. I'm honestly not sure which one I'd put in first. No offense.) And then the duck hunt art in third, and then the wart art in fourth.

Oh well. They are, at least, all pretty good entries (with maybe the exception of the last two - but they're last, so that's okay.)

I don't post on these forums much at all even though I read them thouroughly every day but OMG, THATS WHAT BEAT YOURS?

WHAT

THE

HELL

I am an art major working on my 2nd degree and I KNOW how long some of that crap took to make.

#1 grudge here, pics > animation . . . . . . yeah ummmm how about no.  Do you know how many drawings go into an animation to run at a steady framerate.  Matts and the zelda one clearly are more polished and had WAY more time invested in them.

#2 grudge Ok fine you can submit pics. . . . then WHY THE HELL are the crappier pics at the top of the list rather than the bottom. . . . Pics like the Okami or Mario bros 2 ones should be out trumping the stupid duckhunt one.  They clearly have had more effort in them and look more polished.  I do not know who the judges were but apparently they were just looking for something that made them smirk and laugh rather than effort, creativity, polish, appeal, and so on.  The resident evil 4 one was done in a small sketchbook and just took a screenshot and added the wii mote *retarded again* thats not creative at all . . . .

Im sorry Matt seeing the winners makes me feel like almost like you wasted your time.  I was under the impression that this was an ANIMATION contest not some silly contest that takes silly photoshopped pics and half assed drawings.

Overall Matt save it for your portfolio if your still in school man because to me thats good work to show to your future employers keep it up!

The problem is that they're accepting images or movies...some of the still drawings are very good (although I thought first and second are surprisingly not the best ones) but comparing still pictures to the movies is like comparing apples to oranges.  Is the Mona Lisa better than Casablanca?  Is Scream 3 better than a Sally Forth comic strip?

As far as the movies go, only the Wind Waker one can compete...I'd say based on the rules' focus on using the remote, I'd probably pick that one over Matt's, but Matt's blows away those two sprite movies...they're cute but they're one-trick ponies.

At least the popularity of your movie across the whole of the Internets is a nice plus.  It's a great portfolio piece too.
That's my opinion, not yours.

The second place winner finally loaded for me. It convinced me that the winners were picked at random. I mean, the guy's obviously talented, but second place? That's decidedly sketchy.

edit: Don't let the morons behind this contest get to you, matt. Having a Wii couldn't possibly be better than having the knowledge that you did a good job.

....okay, having a Wii would be better. But let's pretend.
“...there are those who would...say, '...If I could just not have to work everyday...that would be the most wonderful life in the world.' They don't know life. Because what makes life mean something is purpose.  The battle. The struggle.  Even if you don't win it.” - Richard M. Nixon

Yeah, second place...it's straight out of the dude's sketchbook, you can even see the spirals on the side.  It's not the worst of the still pictures, but I'd totally rearrange their ranking if I was judging them.
That's my opinion, not yours.

The only entry on that list that should have been able to beat yours was the WW, and that would be a close call. Sorry man. Some people have no idea how to judge a good thing when they see it.

Believe it or not, that pic is actually of Master Chief, Samus and some dude from Killzone (I think) playing Wii.  Yeah, that's the worst render of Samus I've ever seen.

You got completely hosed.  The only other entry in the same league as you was the Windwaker video, you were right to take notice of it.

If you don't mind I am going to use the mario from your video as my new avatar.

Matt, your video made TechEBlog's Top 5 Fan-Made Game Commercials; you came in at #3.  Congrats!

Oh god....I forgot how much that commercial kicks ass....

The PS3 Wii sploof is incredible as well. The black wii is sexier, hands down.

Sorry for the bump, but I want to say thank you Vudu.  I've seen you linking back here and that makes me happy.  I actually got an offer to have the video featured on a DVD collection of "the best and most popular viral and broadcast commercials".  I missed the entry by a day (I don't check my Youtube account all that often), but I'm currently talking to them about getting into the next edition.  That would be nice.

All your video needs is another (hand drawn) Wii logo at the end.  With a tagline, and it's the best Wii commercial made by anybody hands down.  Great job!
