Title: Your computer specs.
Post by: AlbinoPanda on February 17, 2003, 06:59:09 AM
I think this should go here, I don't see where else it would fit.
Anyway, just post the specifications on your computer, any peripherals you want to add about your computer, your operating system, etc.
Here's mine:
Computer type: Apple G4 iMac Monitor: 15" Apple Flat Panel LCD Display (built in) Processor: 800MHz PowerPC G4 Hard Drive: 60GB Memory: 512MB SDRAM Operating System: Mac OS X (10.2.4)/Mac OS 9.2 Disc Bay: Apple SuperDrive (CD-RW/DVD-R) Internet connection speed: Cable Screen resolution: 1024x768 Peripherals:
Apple Pro Speakers Apple Pro Keyboard WACOM Graphire 2 tablet (used also as mouse) Hewlitt Packard Printer (I don't remember what kind, it's upstairs) Fujifilm FinePix Digital Camera
Well, that's mine. I don't want this turning into a flame war, or "My computer is better than your's" topic.

You know this is a poll post, that is disapproved of in the forums.
Mine's a Compaq model.

I don't see how it's a poll. There are no choices. And it shouldn't result in a flame war.

It is a poll because you are polling for our computer specs. But it shouldn't result in a flame war, so who knows what will happen. Now, is that 800mhz a dual proc unit or not? And if so, do you have problems with some software not knowing that?

It is a poll, but I'm letting it go to illustrate something to you guys. See, a computer has to be VERY FAST to accomodate top games today, resulting in a cost upwords of $1000, all to do pretty much the same things you can do in a $200 game console where the games can be optimized for the hardware. When you can't count on the hardware in a machine, you have to shoot for the lowest common denominator to get sales. Historically, even passable console games outsell GREAT PC games, and that's exactly the reason.

True enough Rick, but a lot of us don't build uber powerful computers to only play games, a lot of us do it because it is our hobby. I mean is there any real benefit for the effort put out to build a computer? Other than it is fun, I am not getting anything more. I could buy a OEM PC for probablly half the price I am building my current rig, and mod that case if I want to. It is really become a game in itself, case modding OCing, showing it off at LAN parties, etc. It is just a fun little hobby a lot of us have gotten into, and although most consoles are thousands of times better deals, they don't offer the same flexibility. I would say I spend almost as much time on the computer games as I do on console games, but that is just one category of it. I spend many more hours on the internet, and many hours messing with the parts in my PC to grab a little more juice from it. Anyway, enough of my rambling, where are the rest of your rigs?

I've got a P3 600 MHz 256 MB RAM 7500 RPM Maxtor 40GB HDD Geforce 2 MX 400 64 MB not sure what the rest is composed of but Speakers: My $400 Panasonic Stereo with Dual 6" Subwoofers, 450watts max power, makes Quake 3 BANG. =-)
I have a question for anyone with tech knowledge. My tech here at work said that I shouldn't buy a new motherboard/CPU/RAM combo to upgrade my computer. He said I would save money by just going to Dell, HP, or Gateway to buy a brand new computer, which I don't want to do. Out of all the ones I've seen built, you can't add much software to them before they start to crawl with lag. So, should I spend $400 to upgrade the motherboard/CPU/RAM on my PC, or just spend a few hundred more and get a whole new PC?
Also, my other speakers blew out (hence the stereo hook up), and I was wondering why. I live by an Air Port, and was wondering if I needed shielded connectors because of the RADAR. Sorry this is so long.

You could probablly save a little bit of money from a major distributer, but they charge mucho money for upgrades. If you are going to buy your own and build, do your shopping around. Look at pricewatch or pricegrabber find a site with service and good shipping and buy from them.

I found motherboards.com. anyone used it? I didn't mean to get the topic all screwed like this.

Don't go with a major distributor, as it's much harder to upgrade and repair them in some cases. I browse through pricewatch.com for good deals on parts, and I'd recommend them if you're looking for parts for good prices. You could find a good CPU/Motherboard combo there, even complete PC deals.

I'm something of an exception to that rule though. My computer specs are fairly high, and I am capable of playing any game out right now. I really only have a few games I actually play on my PC though. I am a console gamer, and proud of it. I keep a tuned PC around, so that I can have my bragging rights, and when I go to do something, it doesn't take 3 hours to do it. I just like to tweak my computer is all. I like tweaking it more than playing games on it.
The only PC games I have bought recently are PS2 ports actually. (Silent Hill 2, and Shadow of Destiny) The next game I want on my PC actually has really low system requirements too.... (Master of Orion III)

Uh...I think that's everything.
Oh, 2 case fans and a PCI fan. (I thought my graphics card was overheating, so I got one of these...turned out it was a problem with the RAM. Oh well.)

-AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (effectively 1900+) -256MB DDR RAM, Crucial Micron (@141)- I really should upgrade this... -Epox 8-HKA+ motherboard (Forget exact model number, truth be told) -80GB 7200rpm IBM HDD -Soundblaster Live! -Altec Lansing ACS-48 Speakers -KDS RAD-5 15" LCD -GeForce3 Ti200 -Lite-On 40(W)/12(RW)/48x CD-RW -Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM -Windows XP Home -300 Watt PSU -Microsoft Intellimouse Optical
That's basically it I guess. Those Altec Lansings are the best value 2.1s ever(20Watts/channel, 40 Watts sub), it's a shame Altec stopped making them. (And that no company makes 2.1s with those kind of power ratings these days...)

Do my Kodak dx4900 digi cam, and 5.1 a/v surround sound system count too? Maybe not. This is my first custom build that I did mainly in the summer of 2001, and upgraded the sound and video last sumemr. Yes, I can pretty much do anything with my computer, watch tv, burn cd, watch dvd, record tv, etc etc. The audio is routed vis SPDIF to my receiver.
