Tetris for Game Boy Coming to 3DS Virtual Console in Europe
« on: December 20, 2011, 03:31:21 PM »

Game will arrive on the eShop later this week.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/28742

The original Game Boy version of Tetris is coming to the 3DS eShop in Europe on Thursday as part of this week's update.

The game was a launch title for Nintendo's first cartridge-based handheld and was bundled with the system. It is given a lot of credit for the early success of the Game Boy. Its 33 million copies sold is still the most ever for a handheld game to this day.

That is... surprising.

Somehow, I figured licensing would prevent this...

Sweet! Nothing like the original! I actually STILL have my original Gameboy AND Tetris game. It'll be great to have it on my Nintendo 3DS also.

Cool. Since we already pretty much have Dr. Mario via the Dr. Wario unlockable in WarioWare, now we have my two favorite puzzle games from the NES era. Sweet!

Nintendo published the original game, so wouldn't they only need to contact The Tetris Company? Well, maybe Konami if they still have the current license.

Good news, although there are better Tetris games on DS/3DS (though I think Tetris DS is hard to find now).

The Tetris company has a list of rules for Tetris games which includes annoying game breaking **** like infinite spin.  Not only does the Game Boy version not have that but it's playing field is narrower than the standard due to the smaller Game Boy screen.  I'm surprised this is getting re-released simply because it breaks the Tetris Company's Tetris rules.

It's not like the player HAS to use stuff like infinite spin, it's optional.

The game physics were changed to accommodate infinite spin, and that's not optional (wall kicks, etc.). Anyway, that's absurd. It's not feasible to enforce that on yourself in high-speed situations, exactly where it comes into play most; you're sure to use it unintentionally.

The rule set for Tetris apply to all the games until they're changed. They're pretty official. The only optional stuff are things that alter gameplay like gravity and cascading.

That being said, this raises my hopes for Tetris Blast and Tetris Sphere.

Tetrishpere would be neat, especially if they made a 3D remake. I'm not sure if the fact that it's quite different from the other games works in its favor or not.

I'm sure it was part of the Tetris Axis deal.

Dare I say it.... This might very well be the killer app for the Virtual Console man! The only thing I could see topping this would be the pokemon classics, but even then you would have a debate. All I know is this game sold boatloads way back when, and I assume it's gonna do just fine in the Eshop.

Good job Nintendo, good job indeed.

Bet they will release DX version in a years time too.

Wont be buying this.

I don't know if I'd say it's a hell of a lot better, as it's basically the same exact thing, just in color. While color would be nice, it's not really that important to the game, it would have increased the price of it, and would have taken away from the nostalgia for some people. Not having played the original version myself, the latter wouldn't have bothered me, and I wouldn't have minded paying $6 instead of $4, so I probably would have preferred the DX version, but that's certainly not going to prevent me from buying it. And now I'm pretty pissed at myself for buying Tetris Axis.

DX was broken... you could wall climb, and the music wasn't as good.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the wall climbing. A lot easier to stop yourself from doing than the infinite spinning, but still stupid.

Actually, this isn't true. Tetris DX added three new modes, though this came at the price of removing the "Game B" from the original. It also was capable of saving high scores, though I don't think this will matter when it comes to the 3DS Virtual Console.

Yeah, the ability to save mid-game and to save high scores become irrelevant in this discussion with the suspend feature in the VC.

I am glad to see original Tetris coming out and hope this means a Tetrisphere release will be likely as I loved that game for N64.  I prefered the Tetris DX over the first Tetris for gameboy as it seemed to play better control wise, especially at higher speeds, and I liked the animations.
