The DS *IS* hardcore gaming.  It's like the SNES reborn.

A) The DS has more girls and women and casuals and grannies playing it than the Wii

Thanks for pointing this out Deguello. Let's not forget that the DS is a Primarily Female Platform.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

DS is TOO hardcore...It needs to share its RPGs with its younger sibling...

The DS can keep its SRPG to itself though. *hmph*

Chris Kohler at Wired has more rankings
http://blog.wired.com/games/2009/01/top-10-games-of.html

Nice to see COD:WaW Wii made the overall top 20 and Wii top 10. So did Shaun White Wii.

Sony is kind of going the opposite of Nintendo. Seriously if you can still look at Nintendo's profits for TEN years and still tell me they do not know how to run a business or what they are doing but are instead just "lucky" that is, well, sad.

Regarding NPD December sales, LBP is now known to have sold 255k copies in December. Since LBP did not chart in the top 20, it can be assumed that all the games in the top twenty sold over 255k units in the month of December, including Link's Crossbow Training, CoD:WaW for the Wii, and Shaun white Snowboarding for the Wii.

Wow...I can totally see why people were claiming Nintendo needed to stop making consoles and go 3rd party.  Look at those profits...Nintendo obviously is not making any money, they are screwed.

(By the way 2007 is absolutely hilarious to me.)

Nintendon't know how to take a loss?

'07 Sony -1.9mill
Nintendo +1.9mill
Microsoft -1.9mill

How odd. & Sony actually lost more than MS did...

What's scary is Nintendo posting these record profits going into a recession.  They have a gigantic pile of money and game-related things are going to get really cheap in the very near future.  They can afford to be extremely aggressive in pursuit of technology and 3rd parties, while their competitors will be forced to turtle up and cut projects, jobs, and funding.

Nintendo's dominance is very scary indeed. The Nintendo 64 showed us what happens when Nintendo gets arrogant; I just hope they learned something from that era. The Wii may be selling out in record time, but their success can be taken from them just as quickly if they make another big mistake.

Does this mean that Nintendo should take this chance to forge exclusive deals with third parties or acquire second party studios?

No, it means Nintendo will continue to bleed the industry of its "wealth" and "sustaining lifeblood" in an effort to force its competitors and high-profile cow-milking 3rd parties to FIGHT for their SURVIVAL.

Buying their way to superficial success by buying exclusives and big budget male-centric advertising will not work as well as it used to.  They'll have to rely on MERIT.

"It seems more and more people are enjoying games instead of traveling or eating out to save money," said Iwata. However, he realizes that the current recession is a rare occurrence and stated that Nintendo is closely watching the market. "Nintendo workers who know only the good times of the company are increasing," Iwata admitted, "I hope to give them a sense of the potential critical nature [of the economic situation]."

Words words words. What Nintendo says and what they actual do are sometimes two very different things. Besides, just because they're cautious now so soon after becoming the market leader doesn't mean all of that success won't go to their head at some point in the future.

"Market Leader Arrogance" is a common news storyline trope usually started by the supporters of the trailing consoles.  Anything that can be taken as an arrogant slight will be interpreted as such in the coming years.  But in reality, very few times does a market leader exhibit such arrogance.  In fact, only recently when Sony basically demanded their fans get two jobs to buy a PS3 and said they made it hard to program for the PS3 on purpose for some reason.

Nintendo probably won't exhibit such stupidity in the future.  The only reason Nintendo's dominance would be considered "scary" is if you are one of those "Competition is always good" guys that neglects to mention how prices for everything from systems to games unilaterally went up despite the "competition" between Microsoft and Sony.   (this was when Nintendo wasn't even considered a contender.)

Nintendo sticking with cartridges for the Nintendo 64, that wasn't arrogance? They made a system which was difficult to develop for, and the games were more expensive than those available on other systems. They assumed that companies would make games for it and people would buy it because they were the market leader going into that generation.

This is the kind of thing which could happen yet again. If Nintendo refuses once more to upgrade the hardware of their next home console and either Sony or Microsoft makes a strong showing with a system that attracts Nintendo's new found costumers, they could easily steal the market from them.

Not necessarily true because Nintendo will have brand recognition which goes a long way to helping them (then again it isn't a sure thing). It is kind of like the iPod, there are "better" MP3 players out there but Apple still has strong brand recognition. Also I think you are mixing stubbornness with arrogance. Nintendo stuck with cartridges because they felt it was the best medium for what they were trying to do with video games. Cartridges were a proven success and they stuck with them. Sony on the other hand crammed lots of expensive hardware into the PS3 and tried to use it as a means of pushing their Blu-ray market agenda, not really gaming.
