Well the PSP has several western games on it. Like I said it probably has more to do with perception than anything, Nintendo handhelds are still seen a Japanese gaming system while the PSP is seen more western.

I agree, but I'm just saying that the PSP has more western games because of perception, didn't say they were actually great games (though there are several good games on it from western developers like God of War).

So in reality, those Western developers aren't making portable games. they're making console games that happen to be playable on a portable. They're basically treating the PSP like a Nomad.

I have heard that Wii Sports has passed up Super Mario Brothers as the "Most Successful Videogame", surpassing its 40 million copies. I'm not surprised to see this happen but I thought it would take longer than this; it's been out just over two years! I wonder how long Super Mario Brothers took to reach 40 million...

Well, to be fair, maybe Wii Sports has been packed in to an even greater extent than the NES' SMB ever was.

Is that true? Wii Sports isn't packed in for the Japanese market, not sure if SMB was packed in there though.

Actually, you're right. I don't know for sure. I just assume that since the Wii has had Wii Sports packed in during the entirety of its availability in Europe AND America, that more than covers it.

A better question is, why isn't Duck Hunt also considered to be tied as the "most successful videogame"? After all, it was a combo cartridge containing both Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt. I know that both games were available separately for a short time, but... how much did each of them sell? Shouldn't Duck Hunt at least be second (or now third)? And then there was the triple-game cartridge which also had World Class Track Meet...

An even better question: how important is topicality?

Dunno, the NES boxes I saw back in the day had graphics from SMB printed on them (over the whole box, not just small screenshots on the back), not sure if that contained Duck Hunt too.

The NES wasn't bundled with SMB/Dunk Hunt until November 1988.  When the system was released in 1985 there were two versions of it--$199 would get you the system w/ SMB and $249 would get you Duck Hunt (w/ Zapper) and Gyromite.  Wanna guess which bundle sold better?  ;D

It was also bundled with SMB/Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet, quite possibly the greatest pack-in of all time.

The greatest Pack in of all time was late in the SNES life which came packed with Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World.

Easily the great game/value of all.

It probably always will be too, as that was before Nintendo realized they could re-release their games separately rather than in a package deal and people would still buy them.

15th January 2009. Continued strong demand for Wii and Nintendo DS in 2008 has resulted in record sales for both consoles in Europe.

Sales of Wii continued on their upward trajectory – with over 8.3 million units sold in 2008 alone, a 58% increase on 2007 and the largest annual sales of home consoles in European gaming history. These sales take the total installed base of Wii in Europe to more than 14.2 million.

In its third year on the market, Nintendo DS continues to break all previous sales records. In 2008 over 11.2 million Nintendo DS consoles were sold – which is the largest ever annual sales of a gaming console in European history. This takes the total number of Nintendo DS consoles now sold to European consumers to over 31 million.

“The sales trend on both Wii and Nintendo DS, hardware and software during 2008 shows that more and more people in Europe are enjoying video games as part of their daily lives. This proves that Nintendo’s wish to expand the gaming population has strong potential in Europe,” said Laurent Fischer, Managing Director, Marketing & PR, Nintendo of Europe.
