Square Enix Talks Nintendo DS

You already know that FFIII will make its US debut on the DS.  See what else they're cooking up for the system.

Yesterday we learned that Square Enix was bring the former half's legendary Famicom classic Final Fantasy III to the Nintendo DS.  Along with that announcement, SE also talked about some of their plans for the unit at Nintendo's press event in Japan.

Aside from III, Square Enix producer Akitoshi Kawazu also had something to say about Crystal Chronicles, also coming to the DS.  "Crystal Chronicles was a game that was played with both the GameCube and the Game Boy Advance, but this time it won't have that kind of a mechanism; you will play the game with the DS alone."

Shigeru Miyamoto was also present on stage, and joked with Kawazu that he was competing against Crystal Chronicles with Nintendo's own Zelda: Four Swords DS, as both will use the dual screens and wireless functions in similar ways.  He then wondered if Square Enix was thinking about using the DS's integrated wireless internet capabilities.

Said Kawazu, "I'm not sure if we can just bring our Internet games directly to the DS, since that would be rather difficult...a lot of people are still saying that the barrier to playing network [games] is too high. But I'm hoping that the DS will help lower that threshold, by bringing mobile games to the DS."

Square Enix has been quite active in the mobile game market, and will be releasing a Final Fantasy VII game spinoff for mobile phones (just for Japan at the moment).  Time will tell if the developing giant can use its mobile phone experience to propel the DS to places it's only dreamed of reaching.

They're probably taking a "wait and see" approach.

Egg Monster Hero's is actually the first Square game i've ever been interested in, I can't wait for that. Everyone seems to ignore it...

Square has already revealed that Egg Monster Heroes, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Final Fantasy III, a new Secret of Mana, and an edition of the Dragon Warrior slime spin-off games are in the works for the system.  Considering that those five games almost equal Square's entire GBA output, I doubt that any new games will be revealed until E3 2005, if then.

anyway ff3 should be fun and sell well but sales could be low if they release the java version around the same time (since 1 and 2 are ment to be released next june), ppl might just go well I will just pay a few bucks bucks and skip a 30-40buck game

Square-Enix will announce a port of FFVII: Advent Calander Children is underway for DS, soon.

Amen to that, Koopa Troopa!  I want more real Dragon Warrior!  I'd also love Dragon Quest VIII for the Cube, but that's a real pipe-dream.  At least there's an outside chance of 4 and 5 on DS.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Indeed, I dare not even dream of that =\  It is really stupid, Enix OWNS Japan, they make the console... why not Nintendo's?

You're right, for some reason I transposed that with DW VII ( I've never played VI =( )

I'd love all three.

Enix has always had a wait and see approach.  They let the console makers fight it out for a year or two, and then they make Dragon Quest for the console with the highest installed userbase.

For all intents and purposes as a GameCube owner, that is true, since that is what their current position is. But technically, that hasn't always been their position (despite what they currently say). There's always been a bit of a story behind why they do what they do.

And I think it also partly depends on what Enix's different "member groups" want to be doing at the time.

With Sony currently being the "unstoppable juggernaut" of the console world right now, and with all the consoles being so very close in their capabilities, I should think that every major third party who's not currently being "bought" should want to take a "multiplatform" stance and at least port their games to the underdogs, but Dragon Quest 8 is largely being made for Enix by Level 5, which pretty much assures that it'll be a Sony-exclusive product for quite a long time.
Poor people should eat wheat!
I'm about to go punk up some 3rd parties so they don't release games on other hardware, ciao!
