Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 18 - Who Are You?
« on: February 06, 2017, 07:18:55 PM »
Yup... scalper! Love how you almost weren't sure you wanted to admit (again) to it, but decided after a pause, hell, the cat's out of the bag!

But anyway, the show is still really solid, keep it up. The Warioland Shake It segment was swell.

Re the dirty rotten scalper.

Sorry, you're a scalper. And you know it. That's why you spent as much time explaining why scalpers aren't wrong as you did attempting to explain why you weren't one.

This was my first listen to your show. Brilliantly done. Went back and listened to a few older episodes. Good rapport and topics. Keep it up, subscribed. A nice breath of fresh air.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo World Report Announces Patreon Campaign
« on: April 27, 2016, 03:59:20 PM »
What I'd support: a flat goal pledge drive that is equal to last year's hosting and domain cost, plus maybe 15%. Compare your alexa rank over time to nintendolife, a much newer site. You don't get Patreon pledges and then a 'renewed commitment to creating original content' follows. It's the other way around. The site has history and talent, yes. Let's freshen up the drapes. And it's the same cabal of posters commenting on every article. The community is stagnant.

People that repeatedly claim to be misunderstood need to either work on being clearer or accept that their subtext was correctly identified and disagreed with. Especially if they sometimes post on Neogaf, too.

The point was either of those headlines could be taken as clickbait, especially coming from a big Nintendo fansite. I don't have a problem with the articles (or the headlines).

Qbert's suggestion of "click bait" has drawn a lot of feedback from the NWR establishment. I'm sure the ad revenue from additional metacritic clicks is minimal at best- although I'm also sure having the lowest score on metacritic does generate additional traffic. I believe Neal that that wasn't his goal, and I appreciate that he's been mostly even in his replies to the feedback. Also, the redone video review is an improvement. But is the idea that the site might use a big game to provoke interest and maybe "stick it" to a Nintendo perceived as dangerously conservative so outrageous, given that last month the site published "Three Reasons Why I'm Not Excited For MK8" and "MK8's Use of the Gamepad is Disappointing?"

So Zach, why should this site have reviews if they don't matter, and why should the reviews have a talkback feature if the comments shouldn't reply directly to the review? I mean, I know you're still working through your anger at the n-Space guy, but looking past that…?

This little clubhouse thread where you talk about other discussions is really childish.

TalkBack / Re: Mario Kart 8 Review
« on: May 16, 2014, 12:27:31 AM »
The review uses the word 'recent' repeatedly. "Recent Mario Kart" I, for one, don't own a 3DS. Mario Kart Wii came out in 2008 -- SIX years ago. I don't consider that recent in video game terms. The review says that many of the tracks are new and unique and extremely fun, yet says the campaign - the structure within which you play these extremely fun tracks - is boring with the ONLY saving grace being essentially co-op. Wouldn't playing fun, new-feeling and unique tracks be the 'saving grace'? The review barely mentions what effect zero gravity has on the gameplay in terms of shortcuts or 'spin boosting'. And there is no discussion about the new power-ups, time trials, nor a a description of the kart parts to unlock. These are some of the reasons, aside from the tacky closing, that the review falls short. Of course some of the long time fans and staff might say this is a complaint about the numerical score, but it's anything but. The fact is this review does NOT meet the standard of detail and usefulness this site should have for the biggest game we've seen and will see in many months on WiiU.

And the video has been removed. Or as Neal would say, it has been colored over like the gray hair of a 30 year old woman.

I just watched the Youtube review. I have RARELY seen a video on Youtube with so many thumbs down. More than 20% of the viewers have rated the video, and it's currently at 85% down vote. And the analogy at the end about a woman in makeup was nothing short of embarrassing.

TalkBack / Re: Second Opinion: Mario Kart 8 Review
« on: May 15, 2014, 01:57:04 PM »
The changes to battle mode and not allowing a second player to have an exclusive view on the gamepad (ala Sonic Transformed) do sound poor and worth a score penalty. I also highly question the wisdom of a review from someone (the other reviewer) that wrote an op ed mere weeks ago about all the ways the game will ultimately disappoint.

« on: May 13, 2014, 10:07:42 PM »
I really didn't agree with most of the host responses during the Tomadachi Life discussion. The most rational step for Nintendo to take with the next iteration would be to remove any romantic elements in the next installment, if there is one. Also, Gui needs to talk more.

It's human nature to be more vocal about negative reactions. Heck, that's why I'm even bothering to reply to this thread.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Wi-Fi Games Get Offline Reprints
« on: April 29, 2014, 07:48:51 PM »
It is a variant and people will pay for it, more for the trolls who use the VGA service so they can try and flip near perfection in a sealed box for hundreds if not more.

That's as ignorant as saying only little kids play Nintendo systems. Most current generation graded games top out around $200-$250 unless they're a score 100 of the absolute most popular series. Considering the original cost of the game and the cost of the service, plus listing fees and shipping, it doesn't approach "hundreds if not more" of profit. And, the overwhelming interest is in first print / black label versions. A variant could even be worth less than the first print, or it could be worth about the same.

I hope Gui didn't excuse himeself from the Episode 400 chat, because he sure went silent at the end of this episode.

My thoughts? Recording in the studio isn't that compelling to me. You already have an OK workflow with local recording in tandem with Skype (though I stand by my early comment that some of the editing leaves the conversation sounding overly dry). I'd sooner you borrow from the community a mixer and multitrack field recorder to use in someone's basement than record in a studio (have a computer taking a stereo downmix recoding too as backup). We should also get a couple activities out of the meetup. The kusoge idea is a good one: have James freak out on something with a couple guys watching. Another idea would be hitting a couple swap meets and Game Shops on the prowl for vintage games that are so in vogue now. What about a visit to a barcade, where you could probably find a couple DK and Mario Vs. cabs to play? All of the above could be captured as video in addition to audio. Less developed ideas: record someone's Mom's first reactions to multiplayer Mario 3D World (I realize that's a slightly sexist and ageist premise, but...); record prank calls to some of the former and irregular RFN crew (let's coax out some more spurned Nintendo hatred from old hosts);  host a Mario Kart 8 tourny at a local Gamestop; DON'T record yourselves rapping.

Good game. It's like Prince of Persia crossed with Space Ace. I played it on the GBA flash cart.

They should have done a Remix 1 discount as in Japan. I'm not buying this for $15. This isn't a second game, it's the last third of a single whole game called 'NES Remix', which I would pay $24.99 for.

TalkBack / Re: Three Reasons Why I’m Not Excited for Mario Kart 8
« on: April 24, 2014, 10:25:02 AM »
Actually, for me, Mario Kart in HD is kind enough of a reason to be excited. I never really cared for the look of MK Wii. But I would like to hear about a blue shell toggle and a reversal on the dual-view-tv-and-gamepad two player omission that Sonic Transformed already set as the standard.

With that being said, I would welcome a little story. Of course, that's as far from Nintendo's usual style as could be, but I think R Racing Evolution was on to something. Or, car customization in single player. Either of those would be more interesting than "anti grav".

NoA's Tomodachi Direct video for this is one of the most funny I've seen from them. Some of the editing timing is perfect, enhancing an already amusing game. One of the best clips they've done since Grill Off Ultra Hand for WiiWare.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Can anyone help a Skylanders newbie?
« on: April 10, 2014, 10:41:38 AM »
I've played the original on Wii and Swap Force on PS3. As far as I know, every do-dad is forward compatible, but only a handful are backward compatible. Overall, I like the games more than I thought, and I did break down and buy more than I expected. The light up ones are especially nifty. I think Toys R US has them on sale this weekend, too.

TalkBack / Re: Mario Kart 8's Use of the GamePad Is Disappointing
« on: April 03, 2014, 07:47:14 PM »
Confoundingly dumb. I literally traded in Sonic Transformed last month because I assumed that MK 8 (which I have preordered and paid off at Gamestop...) would also feature the screen + pad two view / two player mode. Sonic Transformed is a 30 fps game and a darn fine game at that. If Nintendo is willing to drop to 30 fps for 4 players, they should have gone ahead and dropped to 30 fps if the play selects screen + pad dual view mode. I actually think this is worse than DK, because the whole "fit a fifth person in" or "each have their own screen" modes that the pad offers is actually a very valuable gameplay option. Though I still think DKTF should have had soem stats, powerups, speed runs and a world map on the bottom screen.

This is just said. They had a comment recently about how they didn't allow player-made courses because the player courses wouldn't be to the standard. So what?! OK, so all the player made courses would have generic backgrounds and billboards, big deal. The gamepad would have been outstanding for dragging out courses on. And they couldn't think of a single multiplayer mode that has someone playing god or ref or joker on the gamepad as the TV split-screen players are driving? BLARGH

I'll give my opinion on the original question without stealth derision of the two-screen concept or class warfare. My favorite so far is Wonderful 101. Although the "on pad" camera control is sometimes flakey, the idea of solving a puzzle with your characters inside the pad while seeing the effect or feedback on the TV was really neat. My honorable mention is to Deus Ex HR DC, since the map is critical in that game and the WiiU gamepad map is _MUCH_ better than the normal game's on-screen, in-corner map. In fact I just ordered Mass Effect 3 for cheap because it was ported by the same team and has a similar 'super mini map' on the pad.
