TalkBack / Re: Metroid: Samus Returns Announced For 3DS

That's interesting, Azeke.  I played this as a kid and remember it being more combat focused than the first, but also easy with big attractive sprites.  It seemed much more straightforward than the maze of exploration from the original.  At the time, I liked it for that as a portable game and something a small person could beat with no help, but it also never made sense to me that people wanted a remake of a basic portable title that minimized some of what made the Metroid series so unique.  I guess the reason may be tied to the story, which had a memorable ending.

I shall get ready to hate myself for spending money on these.

This looks amazing.  The end of October is an odd time for me, because it means choosing whether to buy it then or enjoy it during Christmas break.  Hmm...

With this and Skyrim, we have the two of the biggest games people wanted on a portable.

The AM2R remake is highly rated and free.

I feel sorry for MercurySteam.  Imagine pitching a new Metroid game and being told to make a remake of a game that was already being remade and near completion.  Still, Metroid II was so basic that they could take a lot of artistic license.  It may still be a great game with a lot to differentiate it.  From the trailer, it looks like they are pushing the combat more into the vania portion of Metroidvania.

Love the aesthetic.  The gameplay seems targeted at young kids, which is cool.  They deserve something better than LeapFrog.

If you watch the Ubisoft presentation, they have gameplay near the beginning.  It is worth it to see Miyamoto walk out and goof around with yet another prop.

Ubisoft had some movie-tier game trailers this year.  It almost makes the games like The Crew 2 look worse when we see them in motion.  Whatever BGE2 actually looks and plays like, the characters seem fun and the overall vibe is similar to Cowboy Bebop.

I'm not sure that this game will be very worthwhile and the Rabbids are hard to endure, but it is always good to see Miyamoto on stage.  Strategy games are nice to have on portable systems, so that automatically pushes me a little closer to purchasing it.

It would be funny to go back to his roots and kidnap a human woman who seems to be under attack by rogue plumbers.  He escapes with her through jungles and into a city, finally scaling a construction site and defending her by throwing barrels.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Will the next Switch iteration have 3DS bc?

Ian, that is all logical, although I can personally say that I would only buy a first gen NS Lite if it had physical BC.  The Switch trend of adding a little polish and "DX" to the title, then selling a port for full price is already getting tiresome.  I purchased MK8 simply because there wasn't much else to play and I needed a title for multiplayer, but the grace period has expired.  I may be the outlier, though.  If they can sell ports of 3DS games for original price through emulation, I can't blame them for doing it.

Get with it, NickMitch.

Discord is only a couple years old, but seemed to immediately take over for voice and text chat in the videogame and Youtube community.  It is kinda a more streamlined version of Roger Wilco.

I really hope so.  As of now, I am skipping most 3DS games simply because it is too much hassle and bulk to carry two portables.  Perhaps a multi-cart slot that accepts both game types would help avoid too much space being taken in the case, and the 3DS should be easy enough to emulate without including a separate ARM chip.

I am hoping that Nintendo begins a tic-toc hardware cycle, with a portable update one year, then a "console" update the next.  As with phones, major updates would come every few years and games would be compatible over multiple generations, so there is no need to keep up with the cycle for those of us who can't afford it.  I think a steady march of hardware development would push them to continue refining and stay competitive, plus new hardware is fun.

TalkBack / Re: The Switch Pro Controller's D-Pad Dysfunction
« on: June 07, 2017, 05:02:05 PM »
Thanks for the article.  Let's hope there is enough noise for Nintendo to listen, even if it is just a quiet refresh without acknowledging the issue.  A Joy Con with a D-pad needs to happen regardless.  The handheld mode is crippled without it, and it also means free handing (my favorite style) is no good for retro or fighting style games.  For PPT, the separate buttons are actually okay in my opinion.  I guess it is because each command is distinct (left, right, drop), rather than making continuous movements.

I know there is the mobile game to talk about, but hopefully there is some good Switch news.  I wonder how many 3DS owners would buy the same game with the usual lagniappe treatment.  I'd say that I wouldn't, but I could easily be talked into it.

It's actually kinda heart warming to see everyone agreeing about something.

TalkBack / Re: E3 2017: Can Nintendo Ride the Momentum of the Switch?
« on: June 01, 2017, 02:40:10 PM »
One thing we also know is coming at some point is a Mario Maker port or sequel.  If they don't have anything else big to show (not sure if a Smash port counts), E3 would be a good time.

I guess the idea is to use Bluetooth headphones at home and hear the muffled sound from the TV through it.

My thinking is that #2 is more relevant, since what we've seen so far is a very minimal OS.  They might have just given almost zero resources to it.  Since the technology of the NVidia chips is quickly progressing, a smaller NSi could have plenty of overhead to run Switch games and still have a proper modern OS in the future.  Not that exciting now, of course.

In terms of legal issues, hopefully Nintendo just uses the clear precedent set by other companies.  There are also parental controls to monitor or disable online functionality for kids.  But, Nintendo does worry about things like this more than seems logical at times.

45
I appreciate that Nintendo likes to pretend that no other companies have solved problems before and come up with their own solutions.  It leads to a lot of great things.  Anything related to their online infrastructure, though, tends to be comically painful and outdated.  This is one category that I wouldn't mind them just copying from competitors or even partnering with Steam on.  I can't see myself ever using this convoluted solution.  It could just be a passive aggressive attempt to destroy voice chat in its infancy on the Switch.

46
I think it would be odd to reveal things about the e-shop, online, media streaming, etc. during E3, because they are still scrambling to meet the bare minimum for a modern console.  If they want to do anything related for their E3 presentation, maybe do a Direct unveiling the services before then and just toss in a mention of a free game download for everyone starting then.  There are also basic UI tweaks like themes to announce at some point.

Some easy goodwill could be created by porting recent 3DS releases to Switch, such as the new Fire Emblem.  There are also still plenty of Wii U ports left, although too many could make the system look bad.

For this year, the Switch already has a good big Christmas title.  Getting more portable developers on board with official game announcements would flesh out the lineup elsewhere.  Otherwise, they can coast a bit until next year, unless Sony or MS drop a surprise portable competitor faster than we expected.

TalkBack / Re: The SNES Classic Is Not The Product We Need
« on: May 19, 2017, 10:43:12 AM »
I agree that having games in a physical format is good, but I would prefer it to be completely physical -- the games would be on the cards.  No internet needed.

It is difficult to say what the right choice is, because these devices have different audiences.  The NES Mini was primarily a hot item because it looked like a little NES, which was great for people who grew up with one.  It was a collectible more than it was a game system.  But, that might not be an audience that will stick around for as long as the young audience you have in mind.

TalkBack / Re: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) Review
« on: May 08, 2017, 10:34:43 AM »
I would guess that most people will never even know it exists.  It will just be how they play the game.  If this is how Nintendo directs the series, it is changing the way future generations will see the game.

I am not saying it is good or bad, and Mario Kart has always been a laid back experience.  It is a big change that is going under the radar, though.

TalkBack / Re: Brothers In Arms: The 3DS and Switch in 2017
« on: May 05, 2017, 03:11:31 PM »
It seems like Nintendo is handling this in the same way they handle all new hardware categories: say that the new product won't replace the old, while internally planning to do the opposite, but doing the R&D for either contingency.  No matter what, they will do what they can to keep their monopoly on handheld gaming.

The smaller Switch that most of us expect to be the first post-3DS mobile (Switchmo?) will be more attractive for a double-dip if it has backwards compatibility with 3DS.
