That would be the most cynically evil move Nintendo could make.

I love it.

Looks like PS4 could catch and pass Wii U in six months time.
Vita is doing much better than I thought keep hearing it is doing.
Wii U is slipping though.
Xbox One might as well just give up there is no way those numbers are profitable.
Looks like PS3 is winding down in Japan too.

Dreamcast cost much less at launch and was only $50 a year and a half after launch.  If the Wii U was only $200 at launch and being sold for $50 right now it's sales would be a lot higher.

If Wii U was $50 it would only because Nintendo is going bankrupt. It is overpriced though, and too late to hope for a surge in sales. Dreamcast was $50 18 months after launch because it was discontinued and it was a fire sale. It's not a good milestone at all...meanwhile PS4 is at over 30 million sold, and it costs as much as 8 Dreamcasts.

22 months. I assume you're talking about the GameCube, because technically the Wii U is the Nintendo's worst selling (real) console. It's at nearly half of the GameCube's LTD sales, but 6 months further along than the GameCube's halfway point, and arguably a year or so away from being discontinued (or at least no longer supported).

GameCube was also heavily discounted at this same juncture in it's life, Nintendo is being uncharactaristically stubborn by not dropping the price. To me that signals they are desperately trying to squeeze as much profit as they can before dropping it for the NX which all signs point to happening next year hopefully as soon as August or September if they can make it work.

I like the Wii U, it has some amazing games, and unlike Wii it had greater potential, it just wasn't what the market wanted. But yeah, surpassing Dreamcast in sales shouldn't be a bench mark, hell Xbox One has already achieved that and it's taken half the time. Not to mention it has also surpassed Wii U LTD totals.

It does sound like Nintendo is still super focused on Japan so there is a chance they might still screw up with NX.

The Dreamcast and Wii U were very different situations. The Dreamcast was actually somewhat successful for Sega, just not anywhere near enough to pull them out of the tailspin they were in from the 32X, Sega CD and Saturn. They were desperate, and doing anything they could to salvage things.

The Wii U, on the other hand, was coming directly off a time where Nintendo was the most successful they had ever been in their over a century of existence. Nintendo has enough cash reserves to operate without any revenue whatsoever for several years. They can afford to take their time, and don't need to rush things in the short term.

Xbox one has surpassed Dreamcast (and Wii U sales), but they didn't do it in half the time. Faster, but not in half the time. Luckily for Nintendo they also sell this other device called the 3DS, otherwise they'd probably have dropped the price on Wii U long ago and either would be putting out a new console now, or boarding up their windows. Then again, they probably have a lot of money in the bank from the Wii still.

Splatoon really might hit 1 million sales in Japan by years end.  Nintendo should be very pleased with those numbers for a new IP.  Can't wait for the sequel.

MS is making a big push this holiday seasons with the Xbox One.  Some might call it desperate, but it's working, I know 5 people buying one last weekend alone (GS promo, $250 Xbox one bundle+CODBOIII+second controller after $100 trade-in value for last gen).

Do we know how well the first one did in sales?

I'm interested in seeing how the series develops and expands.
