Title: Forum upgrade 11/17
Post by: MegaByte on November 09, 2009, 05:27:24 PM
I will be upgrading the forum software starting tonight at 11:59PM PST.  The forums will be unavailable for around an hour again.

Update: Pushing this forward again due to too much New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

MegaByte can't seem to upgrade the forums because they've taken on a life of their own.  Nothing can stop us.  We are Legion.

I really like the look of these new forums. Just the layout makes things feel more alive!

Remember the last time the forums changed? Didn't like the new look, but got used to it. This I absolutely love! Thanks Staff!
Title: Re: Forum upgrade 11/17
Post by: Mop it up on November 29, 2009, 02:37:56 PM
Well, I don't mind the look, it's the layout I don't like. Everything is now huge. Less posts fit on the screen, less topics fit on the screen, less text fits on one line, etc.
Title: Re: Server upgrade 11/8
Post by: BeautifulShy on November 29, 2009, 02:42:29 PM
It doesn't look to bad.
I tried the search and I searched for a specific topic and I didn't get any results.
To add to my post the memberlists are now correct when you click on B you get the B's instead of somewhere in the mid c's or whereever.

Edit 2: Just checked who's online and before the switch if you clicked the user button it would make all the users online move up at the top and the guests and non regerstered users below the logged in users. Now I am getting a error message.Same when I click time.

If you don't like the new default theme, you can change it back to the old one in your settings.  We were using Babylon.

I'll give it a test run, but the NWR logo at the top should probably be altered. Maybe a transparent background or something.

Ah, thanks. I didn't know there were different themes to choose from. I'm going to try out the "core" theme, that one looks interesting.

Also, why is my autopager feature not working? Does the new forum not support it?

Then where are they? Usually they are right above the box where I can type my message and now they aren't there. I see the option for 'additional options' but all that offers is use of smileys and notification of replies.

And is the attachment feature meant to be an easy way to add pics? Are those stored on site? Pretty nifty.

That's probably a problem on your end, with your browser. I know I've had a problem like that before, though they came back in time so I don't know what can be done about it.

Have you tried the other themes to see if they are still missing?

Is there a way to determine if you have a new personal message from the main page on the new theme?  If so, I can't find it.

If there's not I'm probably going to switch back to the old theme.

lol classic maxi...

speaking of PM's though, i've got a question:

is there a way to turn off the message that pops up reading "you have one or more new messages. would you like to open them in another window?" cuz i've had this problem for a long time that constantly shows I have 1 new message when i don't, so now everytime i load the forums up i get that pop-up and its kind of annoying.

Title: Re: Forum upgrade 11/17
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on December 01, 2009, 02:07:49 PM
I have 2 issuses. 1 I'm sure Megabyte can either fix or explain.

1.) When typing up a post, when you use code such as [ url=] it applies it automatically. How do you make it not do that so that you can edit the code you used?

2.) I'm not sure how many people here use Autopager with Firefox, but it doesn't work with NWR 2.0 :(
Title: Re: Forum upgrade 11/17
Post by: MegaByte on December 01, 2009, 02:23:17 PM
1.) I don't know what you mean.
2.) This isn't NWR 2.0.  You mean it doesn't work with the new default theme?
Title: Re: Forum upgrade 11/17
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on December 01, 2009, 02:33:51 PM
1.) I posted in a talkback thread (I'm using core theme if that matters) and I quoted an article, bolded some text and hid the linked to the article in the title while also changing the title size to 3.

It applied the bold automatically in the quick reply window, I never saw the [ b][ /b] tags after I finished typing them.
I put a [ url][ /url] tag in the title to the article, and as soon as I finished typing it, it turned into a link in the reply window. same with changing the size, the [ size][ /size] tags disappeared and the text changed size in the quick reply window.

That is a good feature to have sometimes, since I don't have to waste time with a post preview, but I had made a small error in the [ /url] placement and wanted to change it, but now I'm not sure how since I can't see the forum code i used to do it.

2.) Autopager wasn't working with with the new default nor the core themes. :(
I'm pretty sure that's an problem with AP more than the site itself. I haven't tried changing back to the old theme to see if it still works though.

3.) This isn't NWR 2.0? This was just a cosmetic change? could we change the theme all this time and no one knew?
Title: Re: Forum upgrade 11/17
Post by: MegaByte on December 01, 2009, 02:43:51 PM
1.) Click the toggle view button (the mouse cursor with the red brackets).
2.) No idea.
3.) Yeah, you could change the theme, and many did.

Since this has turned into the bitch to MegaByte thread, I have a request.  :P

Is it possible to make hyperlinks more noticeable on the default forum layout?

This is a hyperlink. (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com)  This is not.

They look too similar!  The hyperlink text is a slightly different color, but it's not easy to spot.  Could you make hyperlinks underlined or a radically different color or something?
Title: Re: Forum upgrade 11/17
Post by: Pale on December 01, 2009, 04:17:35 PM
I checked to see if I have the power to do that Vudu, and I don't believe I do.

My guess is it may involve just editing the CSS for the them itself, which we may or may not want to do because it could reset every time the forum is upgraded anyway...

That's all speculation though so we'll see if MegaByte has anything else to say.  If we can change it, I suggest #006AA4.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade 11/17
Post by: MegaByte on December 01, 2009, 04:39:49 PM
I lightened it a bit in the CSS; I think it looks nicer now.  I didn't use Pale's suggestion because that's actually the color we use for staff colors and it doesn't quite go with the theme.  Long term, we'd like somebody to make a theme to go with NWR 2.0.  If anybody is interested, you can apply for a job.
Title: Re: Forum upgrade 11/17
Post by: Mop it up on December 01, 2009, 05:31:11 PM
Something seems different other than adding a new theme. With the old default ("Babylon") theme, things still don't look the same. The text for topics is slightly larger, the reply boxes are in different places, things like the post summary are different colours, etc.
Change is scary.

I'm sorry to complain so much, but the hyperlink text still looks too similar to the normal text.  If there's a hyperlink in the middle of a paragraph it just doesn't jump out at you; at least it doesn't jump out at me--maybe my eyes are just old.)

We're just pretending to see it so you don't feel as bad. We already know you are crazy ;)

Weird. Which theme are you using?

Edit: It works for me...
It seem that if you just type "pt" after the font size instead of random vague number it works, even for you...

Maybe he should just type his posts right the first time so he doesn't have to go back and edit them.

As for PMs,I'm still having a small issue, that I believe I mentioned here before..

It used to say I had 1 new message, even when I didn't.. now it says I have 2! I've deleted a bunch of stuff and marked everything as read and still, everytime I come on the site it says I have 2 new messages.

I'm gonna bring this up again, even though it seems it only effects me, but today it's been especially bad.

I posted 2 threads in the Nintendo console and the forums were messing with me so bad that I literally had to edit the OP like 2-4 times just to fix all the forum code that hitting the send button would just randomly add in.

It would make the entire post text huge, remove spaces or line breaks and bold the entire post (instead of the bits that I told it too). There were randomly placed [ b]  [ /b] & [ size]  [ /size]  all over the post.

I would go back to edit the post and literally have to manually remove all these errors and when I click send again, it would be a different set, but not as bad as last time. It wouldn't always do them all at once, but it is really annoying that it would just insert all that stuff in there randomly.

I've clicked the red A to turn off code before posting and when editing and sometimes that would help, but the minute I come back in to fix some issues, other issues would pop up.

I'm not sure if you can replicate it or not, but I thought I would point it out.

p.s. I'm using FireFox 3.6 and some parts of the post may have been copy/pasted from the source article if that helps you figure out what may be happening.

Could this also be why my text was small?
