In an interview with Nikkei, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata stressed that the Nintendo 3DS will appeal to the core gamers that might have abandoned Nintendo platforms. Iwata stated that Nintendo working very closely with developers in order to “expand into elaborate games targeting serious gamers.”

Iwata also noted that Nintendo is working very hard to incorporate developersÂ’ requests for the Nintendo 3DS in order to make it the best handheld it can be, reasoning that such “partnerships are good for both Nintendo and software developers.”

While intimating that the Nintendo DS primarily catered to people who did not usually play games, he explained that the 3DS and its more advanced graphics and gameplay – as well as its burgeoning third-party support – will appeal to hardcore player as well.

The Nintendo 3DS is scheduled for release by March 31, 2011.

I'll believe it when I see it.  It seems like a logical thing for Nintendo to learn and adapt to but they talk a lot.

The DS was very popular with casuals but I think it was still clearly the number one portable with core gamers.  It started off really rough but things improved.  The Wii is more where this needs to be addressed.  In the end the DS was actually a good example of a system that had a lineup that was good for both casuals and "serious" gamers.  If they want to improve it, go ahead, but the DS model is not that bad.

I overall agree. However nintendo didn't show Brain Age 3-D or even 'DS Fit" during E3 but showed off Kid Icarus and other more hard core demos. I think Nintendo knows they need to get the hardcore first and the casual will come later, because the 3DS is something you need to experience and casuals won't jump on board right away to new tech.

For example I got my Wii on launch with Twilight Princess. I brought the Wii to thanksgiving and the whole family enjoyed Wii sports. My brother, Sister all own a Wii now and I think allot of that is because I showed it to them first.
I think that antidote is similar to other people and that is why the Wii is so successful. So I'll buy 3DS on Day 1 to play some awesome 3d games, but I'll show off the 3DS to everyone and that will help other people decide to pick one up later. So focusing on the hardcore first is key.
