Title: Shadow of the Tower
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on August 07, 2009, 02:39:33 PM
Interesting new concept from Hudson in platforming style

- pseudo-platformer
- reminiscent of Ico
- a giant tower sits in an abandoned land
- control the shadow of a boy as he tries to climb the tower
- walk on the shadows that platforms cast, and avoid the shadows of traps
- interact with shadows to move things in the real world (pull the shadow of a lever to move the real lever)
- boy has a black butterfly that aids him on his quest
- butterfly can move the light source to make jumps/puzzles easier for the boy
- no release date

Sounds interesting but also disorienting...

I'm intrigued by such concept.

It looks pretty but I'm worried the shadow casting architecture may obscure the playing field.

Here is a video of a different game that is using the same concept. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb5DjyoDObA)

Hopefully Tower of Shadow has a lot of the same ideas for creating diversity in puzzles as these guys do..0

Is this for Wiiware? If it is this is the type of game the service was made for.

It's actually a retail game and is about 30% complete.

I doubt it'll sell much but if they want to throw their money away so be it. They'd probably make more money with a good FPS instead.

Well they could've gone the HD route.

Hudson seems kinda poor financially to me, I doubt they can even afford an HD game.

If they know that, they're smarter than Marvelous.

Oh they don't seem stupid to me, just either unable or unwilling to make "AAA" titles (full multi-million investments).

Yeah, that's about the first thing I thought of when I saw the screenshots. Hudson basically CTRL+C, CTRL+V the art direction.

They made Bomberman: Act Zero.... I'll see myself out.

Seriously though, I think Konami became a majority shareholder of Hudson years back. With Konami backing them, they probably could make bigger HD games, but they seem content generally making Bomberman updates and Mario Party sequels.

It's been over two years since the release of the last Mario Party game and there hasn't even been an announcement of a new one. They might be moving away from that series.

Konami seems to consider Hudson their casual division. I think if Konami wants to make an expensive game they'll make it themselves.

Not necessarily. They're not developing the new Castlevania in house. I'm sure if someone at Hudson came up with an interesting concept, Konami would back them. Of course, that's assuming someone at Hudson is even that creative which is silly.

Mario Party DS came out Nov. 2007. Nintendo will release another Mario Party game. Why? Well, why not? People are suckers for those games despite how trite they've become. It sells so Nintendo will sell it.

I always forget about Mario Party DS. Still, that was almost two years ago, and Mario Party was a yearly release. Here we are approaching the two-year mark and there isn't even a word about a new one. It may come eventually but I think it will be a while, especially because both Mario Party 8 and DS are still selling (MP8 is the best-selling Mario Party).

Lately, Konami's development teams have been losing the spark which made their games awesome in the late 80s/early90s/mid90s.

Nowadays they just force Hideo to make MGS games. =/

There really is not enough 2D games these days.  Perhaps we are finally reaching the point in the generation that developers are getting it through their heads that realism is considerably overrated.  Or perhaps not.  Either way, this will satisfy me.

Oh, and hello.  The thought of introducing myself in the introductory thread is far too embarrassing, so can we just pretend we got that out of the way?  ^_^

NO. embarrassment is part of the process.

j/k, you can stay as far from that thread as you like. just be sure to swing by The Funhouse instead.

Fascinating conceit, although that alone hardly makes for a good game.  Not a huge fan of Hudson but still, this is intriguing.  At first it seems like just an aesthetic decision which wouldn't really affect the gameplay dynamics, but thinking about it more the possibilities open up.  They could have levels where the sun is setting and the shadows grow taller, or a place with artificial lighting or where maybe the light source moves, so the platforms change.  It's also an interesting rendition of 2D gaming, making it in a 3D environment but casting it on a 2D plane within that environment.  I'll probably check this game out, at the very least.  I always admire a company's willingness to do something different.

That was in the trailer that they released.

Is anyone bothered by the fact they're making players "platform" with much less screen real-estate than other platformers?

Your actions seem to take place in a distant view in only a definite fraction of the screen resolution.

An extreme case would playing Mario Galaxy in a PIP window on a TV; that's the feeling i'm hinting at.

New gameplay video. It is a very nice concept for a game.

NWR just posted some new screens and I'm surprised I missed or forgot about this game. It looks like a great concept. Can't wait to see more of it.

Quote
A Shadow's Tale is one of the Wii's most beautiful and interesting games, both understated and deceptively deep. It never overuses one element or another, never dropping in a particular type of light or switch puzzle too often and changing things up just as you begin to suspect it's getting gimmicky. The core novelty of its gameplay never wears off, and the artistic direction is a constant source of pleasure. What with this and Limbo, it's an excellent year for the reimagined 2D platformer.
