Anyon else having trouble with recent PGC WMV files?
« on: March 28, 2003, 12:41:18 AM »
I've been unable to play any of the WMV files posted on PGC in the last week or so.  This includes the "Direct Feed Game Boy Player" movies, the "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield" movies, and the "Link In Action" movies.

I *am* able to play previously posted movies, though.

Of course, I have downloaded the WMF files to my systems before trying to play them.

- On Windows 2000 with Windows Media Player 9 (the latest and greatest, downloaded on 3/27), I get sound, but a black screen.

- On Windows XP with Windows Media Player 8 with the WMP 9 codecs installed, I get sound, and one frame displayed every ten seconds or so.

Is anyone else having problems viewing these movies?

Well, the most recent movies I have watched (Link in action), have worked fine, other than having a bad framerate, and being in WMV format...

But yes, I agree that Divx or similar should be used instead of WMV.  I really don't see the benefit in WMV myself.

Ugh... divx requires a separate player.  Why not just use standard MPEG?  (just curious)

I used to have problems with WMV files, but then Media Player did an automatic codec download, and now everything's cool.  Maybe you just need a newer player?

Why not just use the Divx codec for WMP?  I have no problems playing Divx movies in WMP.

The main reason I am petitioning for a removal of WMV movies though is that it's not fair to Linux users.  I am planning on gradually phasing out my Windows partition, and I don't appreciate being forced to use WMP to watch gameplay movies.

MPEG is nice and large that's why. Divx is the way to go. theaveng you did not notice the date Alkettory gave did you? NM.

Ok, here's the deal with the WMVs.  They are encoded in WM9.  I thought they were encoded in 8, but my new puter has 9 already on it.  Yes, everyone wants their own specific flavor and unfortunately we can't cater to everyone.  Download the latest Windows Media Player.  They'll play fine for you.

I did make the latest SC movies in MPEG format, but you'll notice how much larger those are.  Size is the major reason we go with Windows Media.  Sure we could go with ____ Format, but then no matter what format, you still have to download some sort of codec, or what have you.

Hey, at least we're giving you free movies

If you download movies, you really need to make sure you have the lastest players and codecs.

Real One.
Windows Media Player 9.
QuickTime 6.

If you are asked to update, or get new codec's, do it.

One big codec is DivX, which is being used a lot now.

Billy, I respect your decision, as size IS a big concern, but I think you made your MPEGs needlessly big.

I don't like WMV because it's not nearly available on all systems.  If you are a linux user, it's not simply a matter of downloading the newest codec and installing.  You first must get Windows, then upgrade your WMP.  And from what I hear, Windows 98 users are also left out in the cold.

I installed the Divx codec, and Windows Media Player refuses to use it.  So I can't play divx-encoded movies.

Reduce the quality setting, and you'll get smaller files.

theaveng, try installing the Divx 5.03 codec, and playing this movie.  I would like to know if you can play it in WMP, as it works just fine in mine.

That's a player, not a codec.  The point was to watch Divx movies *inside* Windows Media Player, not to download a separate piece of software.

It's a package of the codec and the player.  When installing, deselect installing the player, and just install the codec.  Trust us.

Btw, does the staff care to comment on this at all?  I am thinking about creating a new thread about it, and in the interests of tidiness, I would like an answer.

Sorry, it didn't work (just like last time I tried).  Media Player says, "Class not registered," and refuses to play the Divx movie.

Oh well.  Right now I only have one movie player, and I don't really have any more room for more (too many MP3s).  ;-)  The number of times I run into a Quicktime or Divx movie is rare enough to not worry about it.

BTW, those Soul Calibur/Link MPEG files looked a LOT better than the WMV files.  WMV may be more compact, but MPEG has it beat for quality IMHO.
