Can anyone answer my question!
« on: March 06, 2003, 05:06:43 PM »
Ok, my brother has a game called counterstrike on our computer, well, for some odd reason he decided he didn't want me to play it anymore.  So he hid the file, he might have renamed it, but i have no idea where it is.  Is there anyway that i can locate the game on my computer.  I have Windows XP, and im pretty sure that there is some sort of trick to figure out where i can find it, so pleaaaase tell me what it is!

HEHE! is it hidden as in the file is invisible?

cause if it is,  you could go to the top of the folder you think it is in,  click on tools,  and click on folder options.

after you go into folder options and the window pops up,  click on the tab that says view.

THere should be an option that asks if you want hidden files to be shown or not.

If that doesn't work maybe you'll need go 007 on him and stat spying.

Well, if he moved the file over into his Documents in his account, then unless you have his login password, or have administrator rights, you cannot get the file. It may be just a simple as it being hidden, as was noted above. If you do find it, make your own copy of the files, and hide them. You could always just reinstall the game. If you have the rights to do that.

I think i have the solution right here:
www.linux.org

I am 100% sure that if they wanted to, the US gov could get on your computer right now. I KNOW they have backdoors, heck windows 98 had a secret- not hidden but SECRET where you had to hack to get to it- file that had EVERY webpage you've ever been to in your entire life. Hows that strike you? I wouldn't put anything on an Xp machine I didn't want the world to see.

As for your counterstrike problem, go to folder properties, and make it say show all hidden files. Then go under the search tool and type in *.exe. He could have named it to something else so typing "counterstrike" might not find it. Now scan down the list until you see something that COULD be CS, then run it. Trail and error, you'll find it.

OR you could just tell him: "Damn it I want to play CS, where did you put the file?" That seems easier.

Can you do that if Administrator has a password?  I'm doubting you can but I'm curious.  I'm to lazy to reboot and test it on this computer.

By the way, if all he did is get rid of the shortcut all you have to do is create a new shortcut.  Better yet, does the CD autorun when you put it in?

Edit:
I tested it.  If the Administrator account has a password set, you can't break in even with safe mode.  To set the Administrator password:
1.) Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete on the logon screen, or if you have the classic logon, you already have to type in a user name.  Now, type Administrator as the user name and leave the password blank.  Log on.  Now, go to the control panel and change the password.  If you want your stuff protected, leaving the Administrator account without a password leaves your computer wide open.

Note, even if you protect you stuff, there are ways for ANY user with administrator status to get at your files, since adminstrators can take ownership of anything.  You have to really know what you're doing to do that though, and I'm not sure it applies to XP Home (I'm using XP Professional).  Note that XP Home and Professional are mostly the same.  Home simply has some disabled/removed features.

We use to do that at school to get on porn (Sad, right?) and other sites that were "banned" like Yahoo.  What the hell are they banning yahoo for?
Anyway, it didn't work anymore once they upgraded to Windows XP.

Zach, sorry bud.  My older brother was the same way. I used to crack his password all the time until he turned into ultra-nerd and made it some type of Kata-kana.  Thank god my brother moved out.  My advice is to try and guess your brother's password (I'm assuming he's the administrator of the computer), its almost always a girl's name that he likes, and sometimes, and less often, something he likes to do, or something characteristic and unique to him.

Ooh.. and if your mom is the admin, its probaly her favorite pets name, or her best friend's name.
it was time for a change.

Yahoo! doesn't censor its members, at least as far as Yahoo! groups goes.  Good for freedom, bad for schools that don't want to be sued.  It's up to parents to control their kids' activities, so the school can't provide a way for the kids to avoid parents' rules, not to mention the vast array of legal views on the matter.

Speaking of "nerdish" ways to control Windows XP, it's possible to move a user profile somewhere strange, and to remove it from the logon list.  Combine that with Windows XP Professional security management, and you have an entire user profile that's practically invisible to the average user, and who's files are only available if another administrator takes ownership and gives him/herself permission to access the files.  Not that I necessarily have such an inviso-user on this computer, mind you.  Hehe.

Bah.  Why would anyone want to play Counterstrike?  Play America's Army instead.  A much better game all around, and it's free.  It's member's intelligence is a lot higher on average as well.

TFC is better than both of them.   You just can't beat running around poisoning people as a Medic.
