That is fantastic news, the thread title got my hopes up and luckily you delivered.

I can't wait, I just hope all the original cast and such comes back otherwise they shouldn't bother. The 4 seasons were excellent and a dip in quality would be dreadfully disappointing.

Futurama to pull a Family Guy?

But I did mean to post that update yesterday basically confirming everything that we said in the thread I just linked to.

I wonder if the show will be as funny when it comes back.  Family Guy seems to have lost something.  These new episodes are still funny but it just doesn't feel right.  There are too many references for fans and it seems like they're trying too hard to meet the "expectations of a Family Guy episode".  I think the time off hurt the show.  I find that TV shows lose their appeal when they start to follow a formula and they make sure they include certain character traits or catchphrases in almost every episode.  It's like early on they define what the show is as they go along and then later make episodes based on that definition.  It's common with shows that are on the air for way too long.  Hell we see it in videogames with series like Bomberman or Mega Man which basically just follow a routine formula now.  Another example is when an actor resumes a role they haven't played in years and their performance looks like an imitation because they don't remember exactly how to play the character.

I think this has happened to Family Guy and is likely the result of the layoff.  When the show was current they were always working on it so it was always fresh in their minds.  But when it was renewed those involved had done other things.  They had to get back into "Family Guy mode" and that involves a conscious acknowledgement of what defines Family Guy.  So they started being more formulaic because they had to analyze the formula to get back in the groove.  Maybe only I notice it.  I do still find the show pretty funny, just not as funny as before.  I'm just worried this could happen to Futurama.

I totally hear you there Ian. Family Guy is nowhere near the quality it used to be, and I fear the same syndrome in Futurama. I do have quite a bit more confidence in the Futurama staff though and I think the show was that much more solid that it should be alright. I feel you too Stevey, 2008 is still a long ways off, all we can hope for is a leak of the episodes early or something.

Another thing that got me thinking, are the movies still going to come out? Doesn't seem logical if the show is going to be aired again, but then again, one could never have enough Futurama.

Family guy lost that weird unconnected humor that it had before.  Where things would all the suddenly go random.  The new episodes are to predictable.  Take the one where Lois gets fat.  Peter at the end is doing stuff to the lard.  You expect that.  If it was from the first run I wouldn't be surprised to see Peter using the lard to make biscuits, when the door opens you see him making the biscuits, stops, and goes "This will make them Flaky. and that will please me."  Better wording though.  Family Guy was funny because you expecting one thing and they do something totally different.  I think they lost some supporting staff that was a lot more crucial then they could have fathommed.

Just watched the first movie, Bender's Big Score. Simply amazing. A true return to form and a simply magical experience. If you are a fan of the show, please support it and buy the DVD, you won't be disappointed.

Side note: The "new season" is just an airing of all the DVDs broken up into episodes, so this is the new Futurama we have all been waiting for.

Well... the first episode is the Movie broken down into 3 eps. each. So who knows, but it's great about futurama. However, I was hoping it would air on AS, It was the reason "Like Family Guy" That they were brought back AS doing what FOX Can't, Digging into their garbage and making it big! :p

Indeed they will be come 2008, However I hope they can as well promoting it as they do with South Park. Although I wish AS could've been the ones to end up with the new season. Like they had with Family Guy, Fox aires it then AS can air it. Plus I love watching Metal Apockalypse, Deathklok, and My favourite anime and comedies.

Bender's Big Score completely lived up to the greatness of the series and sets the bar high for the three (hopefully more) that will follow it. Hilarious, a great story, and 500% of your recommended daily allowance of in-joke references to the series. My fear that it would lose its greatness in its return has changed into my not being able to wait for the next one. Anyone who was a fan of the series needs to get the DVD when it comes out Tuesday and watch it, I give you my double-your-money-back guarantee that it is amazing.

So... once all the movies are released on DVD and once the movies have been chopped up and aired as episodes, will there be a season 5 box set released?

What should I do?  Buy the movies or wait and get some kind of box set?

Definitely a concern of mine. I think I've decided just to buy them in their original form now and support the show. I'm worried if they don't put up adequate numbers it could mean bad things for the show. IMO, Better off to just suck it up and spend the extra dough on the movies rather than wait for the most likely more reasonably priced box set.

They should include special PIN codes in each release like Nintendo does.  Go online and register them.  Then, if you register all four movies, you'll be eligible to buy a bonus disc with all the extras or something...

That would be a nice system. Unfortunately it never works out that nice. Right or wrong, I will download the extras from the future releases in the inevitable boxed set and they can screw off. If I bought everything on day 1 and paid more than everyone else, I am entitled to that content, whether the law says so or not.

Well, I picked up the movie and it was great.  I hated the package though - the disc just comes in what's basically a cardboard sleeve.  However, there's hope!  A slim pack DVD case fits perfectly inside of the existing package.  I got a two disc slim pack case (from cdprofessionals.com) to hold both the movie and the Best Buy bonus disc.  I made a crappy video to show what I'm talking about, in case you're confused...

Bump for movie 2. Hopefully I'll be getting it tonight, if not I'm using illegal means to watch it anyway with the DVD purchase to follow tomorrow.

Fun fact: The cutscenes from the game are being strung together to make Futurama: The Lost Episode and is being included as a bonus on the DVD. Win!

Well I watched it last night, and I'd say the first movie was better. This one wasn't bad, wasn't the best either, but satisfying overall. This one felt like an episode that ran too long IMO. Something that would've been great as a two part episode, but not a four part as this will eventually become.

Well the come back is sort of mixed blessing.

1st movie: Good overall 7/10 but way to convoluted and tried TO HARD to please.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssTFMhlgNCA

2nd movie: More laughs 8/10 but story ended in such an odd way and  overall its to random.

They are just trying to hard and working to many sides.  I'm not angry its back, just think they shouldn't be in such a rush it really feels like they are throwing things together really fast. Both movies I wouldn't rank higher than some of the episodes of the last season.

How can you hate Jurassic Bark? It's dolemite, baby! It may not be the best episode of the series (I'd put one here but there are about a dozen I'd consider for that) but I wouldn't separate it from the rest of them like that. The DVDs aren't as good as the series but that's not because the DVDs are bad, they're good, the series is just amazing.

No I don't hate Jurassic Bark because it's bad, I hate it because it's sad.

Poor Seymour, he waited and waited and waited and when Fry had the chance to bring him back he didn't, and Seymour was left only to wait more. It was a powerful episode but utterly depressing. At least the first movie made me feel better about it.

The second movie was the worst thing Futurama ever did, but it was still good. The series was so amazingly great, though, that the movie was disappointing. And Futurama did emotional endings quite a bit, just usually not to the degree of Jurassic Bark. I don't usually cry during animated sitcoms.

When a comedy makes a serious episode like Jurassic Bark, it often works well. When a "serious" show makes a comedy episode (see Irresponsible from Stargate Atlantis) they are truly truly terrible.

Watched this yesterday.  I have to say it had some seriously slow parts, but I enjoyed most of it.

Having never played the PS2 game, I also enjoyed watching that as a bonus episode.  Time parallax jokes are almost always home runs.

Stargate Atlantis is a comedy series according to its creators.  Bad episodes are just bad regardless.

Jurassic Bark and Luck of the Fryrish can usually make me tear up, and they're two of my favorite Futurama episodes.

I'm hoping to watch the new DVD with some friends next week.  I don't have terribly high hopes after the last one, which seemed like it tried way too hard to include as many references to past episodes as possible.

True, but something about their "comedy" episodes don't quite work. Serious shows cannot do it IMO without watering themselves down in the process.

I will give them points for making such a incredibly complicated story work, and not mess up anything around existing continuity at the same time.

Firefly (and other Joss Whedon shows) work very well...

On topic, the best thing about the first Furturama movie was the Everybody Loves Hypnotoad episode. Watching it all the way through was a preternatural pleasure.

Amazon screwed up my order for the new movie twice in one week.  They sent me the DVD, along with a softcover book, in this huge padded envelope with no protection whatsoever.  That order had to be replaced because everything in it was damaged.  So I got my replacement order today, and once again, they shipped it to me in a huge padded envelope.  The book is okay, but there are now two damaged Futurama DVDs on my dresser, thanks to Amazon's genius warehouse workers.

I'm just gonna download the movie now.  Maybe I'll buy it one day, but for now it's just easier to download it.

POSTAL FRAUD INVESTIGATOR

haha, I never said it was the post office's fault.  If anyone sends something small and soft inside a gigantic envelope, it's going to get crushed.  I'm just surprised it happened twice, since Amazon's usually good with packing stuff securely.

I ended up watching the movie yesterday.  I didn't like it as much as Bender's Big Score, but I'll definitely buy it the next time I'm at Best Buy or something because I really want to see the extras.  I thought the extras on the first DVD were really awesome.

The movies on average have been subpar. I think the episode where Bender is turned into a human is way more hilarious than any of the movies. That said I did like the first one; the second one was good but less funny; and the third was even less funny.

P.S. The Scary Door part was genius. It always has been, but I rewinded this particular one three or four times.

Hm i think you might be right, but to be honest i only saw 2 of the movies shown on comedy central so far; Benders Big Score and The Beast with...

of the two though, i don't think Benders Big Score really had that problem and fit quiet well in the movie format. My only real gripe about it is i never bothered getting the dvd so i've only ever seen it on Comedy Central so the commercial breaks are annoooying!

Does G4 still show Arrested Development? Does this breathe hope into that getting revived too?
Maybe more networks can pick up on past FOX failures and give them the success that they deserve.

GJ for Futurama though, I look forward to their return, but I bet FOX will add them into the Animation Domination Sunday Nite Line Up and make Comedy Central air new episodes a week or 2 later (like they did with FG & CN)

Futurama is one of the few cartoons I actually kind of like, since it isn't incredibly random (Family Guy), offensive for no reason (American Dad), growing stale (The Simpsons), or overly preachy (South Park).

Comedy Central bought the rights to new episodes, so as long as that contract exists Fox can't do that (Cartoon Network only bought syndication rights to Family Guy). I hope 20th Century Fox (which does own the show) reaches a deal to air it on FOX too since I don't have cable.

Family Guy is a mixed bag. Some episodes are great, others suck. I don't like how they always put down Meg, and I hate how Seth MacFarlane tries to make marijuana use look acceptable. How is American Dad offensive? They have jokes for liberals, democrats, men, women, pro-life, pro-choice, etc. They pretty much go to everyone. The Simpsons may not be at its funniest anymore, but it's still very good. South Park is rarely ever preachy and they still show that they will take shots at anyone.

As for the movies, I have seen the first 3. The only one I didn't like was "Futurama: Bender's Game", it was so boring.

Indeed. As Matt Groening and David X. Cohen even mention in the audio commentary that Jurassic Bark is cited by Futurama fans as one of the most emotional episodes of the series, and one of the few episodes of any series that made me get a tear in my eye during the end montage of Seymour spending the rest of his life in that spot waiting for Fry to come back (and I love how they reference this in the first Futurama movie).

It was never confirmed that Comedy Central would air new episodes in 2008. The only confirmation was that they would take the 4 movies and split those up into 4 episodes each (and those 16 "episodes" would make up the 5th season). This is the first actual confirmation of new episodes.

Out of the movies I thought they got off to a terrific start with Bender's Big Score, while not as good as the best Futurama episodes it was still right up there. It also dabbled in stuff that I wanted to see, like the Fry and Leela relationship also the ending was really promising (with the whole universe splitting open and stuff), but they really failed to follow it up with Beast With a Billion Backs. They never followed on with the whole Fry & Leela thing and the "Beast" was pretty lame as a whole.

Bender's Game was trash, I wouldn't have minded it as much if it was just an episode, but it was basically 4 which sucked. Into The Wild Green Yonder was good, not as good as Bender's Big Score, but it was definitely a more interesting storyline and the ending was good again. I want to see how they follow this up with the new series.

There's still the Arrested Development movie coming.  That could save the show.

Except that it's been confirmed that they haven't even started writing the script yet, so it's a long way off. I also doubt that they will revive the show (although I would love that).

As much as I love Arrested Development, I really wouldn't want it to go past a new movie. Especially if that pretentious twat Michael Cera is still in it.

I agree Dasmos. The movies started and ended great, but the stuff in between was pretty boring. I don't think the show lends itself to movie length material, so I'm looking forward to a return to an episodic format.

Sucks that it's going to be another whole year to see something, but man is it going to be great when it returns. I just hope that they still have the touch, and that they can continue to build on the great stories and characters.

Your missing out on alot if you keep with your pompous attitude. These shows are meant to be funny, first and foremost. Just take them for what they are and not what you would like them to be, and you will enjoy them.

It's great to hear they are making a new season (or is it two seasons?). I've been watching futurama like an addiction. It's really a great show with lots of creative story-lines and hilarious characters (I still laugh everytime I think about Bender yelling DOOM!).

That said, my favorite episode has got to be the very last one where Fry creates an opera. That episode was perfection.

I find this quote worthy. I think it's hilarious everytime they put down Meg. I distinctly remember a part of an episode where Peter's like "That's right, everyone. It's a Meg episode.......Here's the clicker. You could change it and no one would blame you." I almost spit out my drink watching that.

I remember reading a story in Rolling Stone where the writer just had to say they were in pain and the doctor just gave him a prescription (without actually running any tests or exams). It does seem a little to easy to get a medical prescription for marijuana in California. I don't think medical use should be allowed either.

why wouldn't you want it to be used for medicine?

You realize that is was only made illegal so that hemp couldn't be used as an alternative to paper. Lobbyist for the Paper Industry back in 19XX made sure of that. Marijuana has plenty of uses other than just getting high(which is also beneficial for many).

You are not gonna convince me to support illegal drugs. While their is some minor legit use for hemp, there is no legit reason to smoke it (there are other medications available for people who claim to need it for pain).

manufactured drugs that replicate things already found naturally in marijuana?

Nobody is trying to get you to support anything. Just trying to make sure you know that marijuana is more than just getting high. It has many medical uses and hemp has many many alternative uses too. Clothing, rope, paper, etc etc. Its a plant that keeps on giving.

Marijuana was never made illegal because it did harm, it was made illegal to help the paper industry by stopping an alternate and cheaper source of paper from being produced. It was a corporate agenda. Very much different from supporting the use of crack or heroine.

The only possible way I could ever support legalizing it (which I would fight against if they ever tried to do it) is if they did the same thing they do with tobacco and put extremely high taxes on it. The negatives to this drug far outweight the minor positives (when it comes to consumption).

Be careful, this is borderline against the rules.  That said, I don't mind the debate, you just don't want to get too much into politics, or else you'll get a clear "steer clear."

If it were up to me, I'd say make some aspect of it more legal, just to stop the flow of money from reaching drug-related criminals, and such.  It's a substance that alters how brain chemistry works, and there's several of those already available legally, what's the harm of one more of the "lighter" ones?

You're missing out on a lot if you keep with your pompous attitude. These shows are meant to be funny, first and foremost. Just take them for what they are and not what you would like them to be, and you will enjoy them.
I don't like what they are. Just because something is intended to be funny doesn't mean that it is. I've learned this through experience.

Fair enough. But I'm curious. What do you  find funny?

Also, do you drink beer? Cuz I hate how Seth MacFarlane makes alcohol use look acceptable. /end stupid statement

Here's the difference: one is legal and one isn't. Please don't tell me you support illegal drug use?

Ok. Let's for a second look at both of these drugs, shall we?

Alcohol is legal and is clinically proven to be a very addictive substance. It can impair your ability to think, talk, walk, and operate a vehicle. While low consumption actually produces more anti-oxidants to scrub your arteries, heavy use can lead to heart disease, nausea, dementia, and cancer (of which pancreatic and liver cancer are the most common). Alcohol is a depressant and can lead to feelings of depression and/or anger. You can overdose on alcohol, or alcohol poisoning, causing your breathing and circulation to your brain to stop. Every year roughly 75,000 people die in the US from alcohol related illnesses, not to mention 30-40% of all traffic fatalities are caused by alcohol (~12,000 people died in 2007).

Marijuana is illegal and has been clinically proven to not be physically addicting. It can impair your ability to think, talk, walk, and operate a vehicle. Consumption of the drug increases appetite and decreases nausea. However, since marijuana effects people differently, people could experience anxiety, restlessness, and paranoia. While smoking marijuana can damage and tar the lungs, it can enter the system in unharmful ways. Marijuana can be served in food or a beverage and if the active ingredient (THC) is harvested, it can be inhaled with vapor. You cannot overdose on marijuana. Furthermore, there has never been a report where marijuana has killed a person. However, the illegal nature of marijuana makes the drug more dangerous due to the nature of the drug trade. But unlike alcohol, Marijuana does have a lot of medical and societal uses. It can relieve pain without causing addiction (unlike all opiates). It increases the appetite and decreases nausea in cancer and aids patients (the number one reason for "wasting away"). It can effectively lower intraocular pressure (main cause for Glaucoma) more than a variety of drugs on the market. It's seed has all the essential amino acids and EFA's. It's stalk and leaves can be made into fibers to create stronger concrete and rope. In 1916, the US Agricultural department stated that paper created with hemp pulp was more favorable than those from wood. Furthermore, one acre of marijuana can produce as much paper as four acres of forest. It also only needs about 1/7 the amount of sulfer based acid (a pollutant) as wood pulp, and completely sidesteps the use of harmful chlorine bleach (which has been known to pollute rivers) with the greener hydrogen peroxide. Henry Ford created the first biodeisel with marijuana. Your founding fathers grew marijuana by the acres.

But I digress. The point I would like to make is that Alcohol use is more dangerous and less useful when compared to marijuana. So to answer your question: Yes, yes I do support a recently illegal drug. Marijuana is our prohibition.

Hemp - at least the type of hemp typically used to make rope, paper, etc. - is not the same stuff as Marijuana.  Do keep that in mind.

As much as I may disagree with it, I do understand the "rationale" behind outlawing marijuana.  There is no rational rationale behind outlawing hemp.

For the record, I don't smoke marijuana (or hemp, but that'd be crazy) and have no desire to.

Your right. Hemp and Marijuana are quite different. They come from the same plant but marijuana has very high THC and low CBD levels, while hemp is the exact opposite.

Still, combined they are even more useful; marijuana, for its proven uses in medicine, and hemp, for its proven uses in agriculture.

The fact is they outlaw both. I'd consider it a triumph if they were to at least repeal hemp law. It's undeniably effective. It grows fast, strong, and dense; not to mention cutting down trees is part of our carbon emission problem (on both ends). But law makers will never repeal one and not the other for trivial reasons. There are countries around the world that allow hemp to grow, but not marijuana; and they are better for it.

But that is where the dilemma is.

Futurama.

Sarcasm. Irony. Satire. That sort of thing, so long as they aren't overdone or offensive for no reason other than shock value.

Sight gags. Clever puns (emphasis on "clever").

If I had to pick a stand-up comedian, I would say Jim Gaffigan. He never swears and is pretty clean, which is an increasingly rare thing these days. Plus he has a lot of jokes about food. You might like him Kashogi Y. Stogi, if I remember rightly you said you live for food or something like that.

I like him better in his current form, he's my favorite stand-up as well, but he was really good before too. Most of the difference is the language, though he was a bit crasser. And the best episode of Pale Force is the Law & Order parody, which apart from a couple stupid jokes was absolutely perfect. I think that was one of the ones you could only watch online.

See, I'm the exact opposite. My favorite comedian after Dave Chappelle is Russel Peters. Dave is the king of timing; his stories and jokes are well executed. Russel has stereotypes down to a science. But while they both are offensive, they don't pick sides.

Furthermore, while you may find them insulting, I think they actually help the world. If you can't laugh at our differences, how will we ever get past them?

P.S. I've seen Jim Gaffigan and I found him funny although I never once laughed out loud.

As much as I love Futurama, and that's a whole lot considering it's my second-favorite TV show all-time, I'd rather they not bring it back than do this. I can't believe Groenig and Cohen would go along with it. I'd always thought Futurama was one of the very few shows that had never had a bad episode, I suppose that streak's coming to end.

Oh of course, but the simpsons have been out much longer than futurama has so chances of seeing one of those older episodes is slimmer compared to catching a re-run of something from futurama's first seasons. That's what makes it more evident, since i end up seeing those episodes more often.

Besides we're talking about futurama here not the simpsons :P

lol, in one class I had in high school we watched that episode of Futurama about 5 times trying to find all the "scientifically implausible" events and things. For instance the whole journeying to the moon in less than 10 seconds and stuff. I can't remember all the other ones, but the teacher took it pretty seriously. My firends and I just kept coming up with stupid things like "giant bugs don't give milk" and "crocodile don't live on moon" and things like that. He got pretty pissed off.

It was a good class though, we ended up watching the whole first & second season of Futurama over the course of the semester.

Futurama is GO!!!!!!

LOS ANGELES–The Star has learned exclusively that the entire voice cast of Futurama has just signed a new contract with Fox after weeks of intense salary negotiations.

As late as last week, the network was threatening to replace the original voices of Matt Groening's cult-hit cartoon, to the point of actually announcing a casting call for voice actors to replace them.

The Futurama voice cast includes John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Billy West, Tress MacNeille and Katey Sagal.

The compromise agreement, with the studio paying more and the actors accepting less,* comes after the announcement of a 26-episode pick-up here by Comedy Central. Futurama also airs internationally in syndication, has produced four bestselling straight-to-DVD movies (later cut into episodes) and an upcoming feature film.

"We are thrilled to have our incredible cast back. The call has already `gone out to the animators to put the mouths back on the characters," Futurama creators Groening and David X. Cohen said in a joint statement.

* The Studio is paying more than the Voice Actors were originally getting while paying less than what they were asking for.

I didnt even think of that. I loved it how they poked fun at being canceled in Benders Big Score.

Futurama Returns To Comedy Central in June
Quote
New episodes of the resurrected animation favorite "Futurama" will return to Comedy Central in June.

Comedy Central sources confirm to HitFix that Thursday, June 24 at 10:00 p.m. is currently set to be the premiere of the first new half-hour episode of "Futurama"since 2003.

"Futurama" launched in 1999 on FOX and aired through 2003. Adult Swim and then Comedy Central kept the show alive in repeats, with Comedy Central giving a home to extra-long "Futurama" episodes "Bender's Big Score," "The Beast with a Billion Backs," "Bender's Game" and "Into the Wild Green Yonder."

Ratings for the constantly recycled repeats, as well as DVD sales, helped to spur talk of a comeback and, in June of 2009, Comedy Central announced that the network had ordered 26 new episodes to premiere starting this year.

Fan enthusiasm was temporarily tempered by overblown reports that the vocal talent including Billy West, John DiMaggio and Katey Sagal might be replaced for the run of new episodes. Eventually, the full cast reached new agreements and Philip Fry, Bender, Leela and the rest of the "Futurama" gang will sound very much like you're used to them sounding.

Created by David X. Cohen and Matt Groening, "Futurama" won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program in 2002.

Query: how many seasons were there prior to this revival? I own four. I don't think there are any other ones besides the movies, which I didn't bother with.

I can't believe it took me this long to get around to watching these new episodes. I didn't want to watch them before watching the final DVD movie, and I kept putting that off.

I've watched the first 6 so far, and they've been up and down. None of them were bad, but most weren't up to Futurama standards, at least not the whole way through, though the last one I watched, where Bender had to come to terms with his own mortality, was great.

There have been some really great lines in all of them, though. One in particular I intend to use in my everyday life: I don't remember the exact context, but Leela said something about Amy, who said it was stupid, and Bender replied with "The truth is often stupid."

The other night they had a holiday themed anthology episode called "The Futurama Holiday Spectacular", including Coolio reprising his role as Kwanzabot and Al Gore as his head in a jar. It was a good special, and I hope the next season is longer than this years short season.

The producers are not giving up though, they said they will continue looking for a new home for it. And they joked that this is the 3rd time they have accepted the end of it (1st time after Fox canceled it, 2nd time after they finished making the 4 movies and thought that was it). Stupid Comedy Central had to spoil how it ends though when they announced the cancellation: The series finale will focus on Fry and Leela's wedding.

TECHNICALLY only the first season was 13 episodes. Comedy Central aired 2 seasons of 26 episodes each, splitting up each season over 2 years (i.e. the first 13 episodes of season 7 aired in 2012, the final 13 airs this year). I don't know why they consider them the same season (it's like how season 6 aired 13 episodes in 2010 and 13 in 2011).
