DS Lite Gets a US Release Date
« on: May 04, 2006, 04:55:20 AM »
The DS Lite finally comes out in the US on June 11, 2006.

NEW NINTENDO DS LITES THE WAY FOR MARIO

Lighter, Brighter Hardware Follows Latest Version of Top Franchise

REDMOND, Wash., May 4, 2006 - Millions of people around the world already enjoy playing Nintendo DS™, and the system's future looks even brighter. On June 11, Nintendo DS™ Lite joins Nintendo's video game family when it launches in the Americas. The lighter, brighter version of the hot-selling Nintendo DS is expected to be priced as low as $129.99 at retailers throughout the United States. The inaugural color is an elegant Polar White with a raised DS logo on the cover.

Nintendo DS Lite arrives just in time for players to pop in the latest version of one of the most storied franchises in video game history. New Super Mario Bros.®, launching May 15, updates classic Mushroom Kingdom action with new features and fun.

"DS Lite and New Super Mario Bros. represent a double shot of gaming excellence," says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "We've got something for both lovers of beautiful, new gadgets and fans of old-school gaming."

Nintendo DS Lite comes with a variety of distinctive changes that set it apart from the original - and from all other hand-held video game systems:

  • It's less than two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and more than 20 percent lighter.
  •
  • Its two bright screens can be adjusted to four levels to adapt to different lighting conditions and to extend battery power.
  •
  • The microphone sits in the center of the unit, and the LED lights are clearly visible whether the unit is open or closed.
  •
  • The stylus is 1 centimeter longer and 1 millimeter thicker than the stylus of the original, and slides into a side storage slot.
  •
  • The Start and Select buttons were repositioned for easier access.
  •
  • A removable cover keeps the Game Boy® Advance cartridge slot clear from dust and debris when it's not in use.

New Super Mario Bros. is just one of the many Nintendo DS games that look great on Nintendo DS Lite. Players set off on a side-scrolling platform adventure bursting with the style and superb game play that got many people hooked on video games in the first place. The Mushroom Kingdom is populated with friends and foes, both new and old, and tons of power-ups, including mushrooms that make Mario mega- and micro-sized. The Super Mario franchise has sold more than 184 million games worldwide, which makes it one of the top-selling video game franchises of all time.

Ever since its November 2004 launch, the original Nintendo DS has helped to redefine perceptions of what constitutes a video game. Many systems have been sold to people who are discovering video games for the first time. Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo's wireless gaming service, has seen more than 1 million connections worldwide. Thousands of people every day log on to battle one another in Metroid® Prime Hunters or see who has all their Tetriminos (falling blocks) in a row in Tetris® DS.

Nintendo DS continues to broaden the market for video games. Nintendo DS has software that appeals to older gamers, hard-core gamers and even lapsed gamers. Brain Age™: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day went on sale in the United States on April 17 after encountering massive success in Japan. Nintendo will continue that momentum by introducing two upcoming titles that require more brain power than firepower. On June 5, Big Brain Academy™ arrives to challenge users with a variety of mental tests designed to evaluate various skills. Then on June 26, Sudoku Gridmaster will keep number crunchers busy with more than 400 sudoku puzzles, each one sanctioned by the original creators of sudoku.

Totally.  I was thinking the same thing.  129 is an excellent price point to sell at.  That basically cements the fact that they will sell tons.

I'm a bit dissapointed that there is only one color to be had, but it's not like it's a bad color, and the price makes everything better.  I just now have to find out how to afford it.

Only white?

This makes me not too sad that I won't be able to get one at launch (50% because of the price, 50% trying to convince my wife that I need a second DS, or, in her case, yet another thing to play video games on... )
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

I've been waiting for this announcement.  I actually held off on buying a DS because of the announcement for the DS Lite.  Sweet!

129 price point puts that at an almost impulse buy range for me, the only thing that would kills that is that it will only be in white at launch. im relieved though. nintendo is always making me buy things on impulse (just picked up brain age two days ago cuz it was 20 bucks and i had 30 on me...21 for brain age, the rest for food) and because i havent had my ds for very long, i dont want to buy another one right away. I am picky when it comes to colors and i didnt like the blue or gray ds's out, so i waited. when i found out mario kart was coming bundled with red ds i turned into a little school girl and started jumping up and down. that wasnt all that long ago, so why replace it now?

unless i can hint to my girlfriend to buy me one for my birthday later in june, i dont see gettin the White Lite

I guess this is good for me.  I'm getting married on June 10 and so will be on a plane while this is selling out everywhere.  That way, I can just use my GBA on the plane and not worry about wanting to play my DS while on my HONEYMOON!!!  Yeah, I'd be an idiot if I gave myself that temptation...and gave my wife that same temptation. :P

$129.99US=$143.94CAD? Cool! It's a pity they only have white for now so I'm not getting it. And about the price point, I expect that FutureShop, EB, or BestBuy will charge it at $149.99 because we know they care about us...not.

Congratulations, Louieturkey

In other news, awesome!  I don't really plan on getting a Lite, except for maybe my mother and sister (I like my heavy DS, plus it has a custom skin done by my friend), but great news nonetheless.

if I can wait I'd rather hold out until the midnight blue version releases bundled with new super mario, that would be a sweet deal (and paying $150 for that sweet deal wouldn't be a bad thing but I can see how they wouldn't do that seeing as how the higher price tag would drive some people away)...  except seeing as how they only announced the white lite that does kinda make me wonder if they'll not release midnight blue in the states at all, that would make me sad, but in that case I guess a white lite would be okay...
At some point, I'd think Nintendo fans would get sick of the anticipation and just say "screw it," but Nintendophiles are odd, odd creatures indeed.<BR>—Chris Carle, IGN

I'm shocked at this great price point.  I'm less shocked at the single color choice, as NOA continues to offer fewer color choices than are available in Japan.  And having just one color makes even less sense, considering that they are clearly waiting until June to make sure supplies will be adequate to meet demand.  But whatever; the white one looks great and will sell like crazy, and it deserves to.  DS Lite is a great system, one of the best Nintendo has ever designed.

Aside: I wonder if Nintendo is sticking with white because it looks the most like an iPod?  (Of course, my nano is black, as will be my Wii and eventually my Lite.)

What's so shocking about the price? There is no sane reason to charge more for the Lite than the standard DS, in fact it should be cheaper because there's less material involved.

You're buying a new Lite when it comes out in black?  Can I have your old one?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I'm not surprised by the price. The DS wasn't selling at $130 in America. NOA had two choices, they could either offer another price drop, or an upgrade to the DSLite. They can't just bring out the DSLite and increase the price, the way Nintendo did in Japan.

I figured that NOA's voluntary "stepping aside" on the DSLite and letting all of it's stock get gobbled up by Japan was a pretty clear indicator that they weren't going to try and charge the same as Japan.
Poor people should eat wheat!
I'm about to go punk up some 3rd parties so they don't release games on other hardware, ciao!

At the press event a few weeks ago NOA told us the price would be 149.99.  Glad to see they went back and thought it over again.

Price drops on the other stuff seems possible now too.

Well at least that burning question is answered. So one month and one week left until domestic release. I can't wait to challenge PGC'ers on WFC.

June 1st for the Aussies? Did Nintendo Australia *GASP* do something right? There's hope for them yet...
