Futurama to pull a Family Guy?

Matt Groening has faith in the relaunch of Futurama, writes Michael Idato.

Nearly four years after it was cancelled, the popularity of Futurama on DVD could breathe life back into the animated television series. On the subject of a rumoured resurrection, creator Matt Groening, best known for his other animated hit, The Simpsons, says, intriguingly: "You never know."

Such a trail was blazed in 2004 by another animated series, Family Guy. Fuelled by DVD sales and high-rating reruns, it spawned a direct-to-DVD film and two seasons of television episodes.

The move caught the television industry by surprise, and left several lost properties, including Futurama, ripe with possibility.

"Three months ago, I would have said we were going to start tomorrow," says writer David X. Cohen, who collaborated with Groening on Futurama. "And one month ago I would also have said we were going to start tomorrow. So ..." He pauses. "My current estimate is that we're starting tomorrow."

The series, relaunched on Ten earlier this month (it previously aired on Seven), was something Groening and Cohen tinkered with in the writer's room at The Simpsons for more than two years. Cohen's background was in computer science, but both, Groening recalls, had a passion for science fiction. "What Matt is saying," Cohen interjects, "is that I stood out as the nerd on The Simpsons writing staff, and that is really saying something."

Not trying to get your hopes up, but it is something to look forward to. I liked Futurama better than the Simpons anyway.

Yay! Although Family Guy is better than Futurama, almost to the point where the two shows shouldn't be compared, I want this show back; I don't care if its on Fox or not.

The return of Nibbler!!!!

I love both The Simpson's and Futarama about equally.  Family Guy is funny, but not a show that I want to watch every time it's on, like with The Simpson's.  Don't care if it's a repeat, it's still funny.  I hope I get the 7th season of The Simpson's for Christmas, if not I will buy it myself on the 25th (we open presents of Christmas Eve.)

Nice this is an Australian news story. I picked it from the channel 10/channel 7 ramblings though, the URL just confirmed this. I also think Futurama was better than Family Guy, but yes they do have different styles of humour.

I love Futurama, but personally I think the show had a good run and I'd like to see something new instead.  Basically I'm afraid of Futurama going the way of The Simpsons.  I love The Simpsons and I think the last couple of seasons have been pretty solid, but the show has gone downhill and had a few really mediocre seasons around 2000-2003.  I like that Futurama never had a chance to go rotten.

Old Family Guy is better than Futurama in my opinion, but Futurama is way better than the new Family Guy.

I agree, but Futurama is also better than The Simpsons, so you know what that means about the Old Family Guy

No really, I did that. I have the four boxsets sitting right next me right now. To think I can buy a FIFTH one tickles me in a way I can't describe without getting banned. Classic Simpsons pwns all, but Futurama would be my second choice.

Old Simpsons > old Family Guy > Futurama > new Simpsons > American Dad >>>>> Baby Bob > new Family Guy

edit: on topic, I'm ecstatic that Futurama is coming back. Hopefully the series will come back newly improved instead, of say, horribly tarnished and no longer any good ala Family Guy.

I found Futurama ridiculously predictable.  Same with the Simpsons.
I dunno, I just always see the jokes coming before they're told.

Well, I'll agree that they aren't great comedies... in the sense that they don't, for the most part, have jokes which both come out of nowhere and make you laugh for several minutes. But how many TV shows can you say that about? ...apart from Monty Python?

This is great news. Season 4 finished like it wasn't meant to actually end, and all the people speaking on the DVD commentary were still eager to keep on working on it.

I found the best part of Futurama was that it was very fast-paced, had some excellent writing (very funny at times, very emotional at others) and the voice acting was top notch. Billy West  took a small piece of my soul with him when he did this show, and the characters he bring to life jump off the screen, such as Zoidberg and Zapp.

In short:
YOU WATCHED IT, YOU CAN'T UN-WATCH IT!

The Episode "Jurassic Bark", fits in the very emotional part.  It also happens to be my favorite episode because it is also the most heartbreaking.  The ending is what really made it so memorable, because it was so sad, had Fry known he wouldn't had done what he decided to do.  And it also fits the YOU WATCHED IT, YOU CAN'T UN-WATCH IT!, because you can't forget it either.

Apart from Monty Python, I've watched Arrested Development, which probably has the best writing of any show I've ever seen.
It was also cancelled, and might return.  I've also seen other shows that I've liked, but they're about on par with  Futurama.

Arrested Development could very well be my favourite show of all time, if not that it's Faulty Towers (which in my opinion is better than Monty Phython's Flying Circus, but only just). But Futurama would have to be my favourite animated show.

When did random humor become the only form of comedy? Hm.... I pretty much agree with Wandering's rankings, but I'd switch Old Family Guy and Futurama, as Futurama holds up better to multiple views and was more consistent through its run. But we've discussed this before, multiple times even I think.

Looking forward to Futurama's return, in the hope it doesn't suck. Better not be on Fox, though.

I liked "Futurama" but only because of "Dr.Zoidberg" and his crazy antics. The "Family Guy" is ok sometimes but other times it is just a pointless waste of time. My favourite old-time comedy would have to be "The Black Adder".
