TalkBack / Re: Dark Horse to Release Hyrule Historia Limited Edition
« on: November 29, 2012, 11:48:48 AM »
Wow, vintage PGC user/pass worked :)
I think I'm gonna camp out at the Nintendo World Store for this one. I called them up to see if they're taking preorders, but it looks like it's a first-come first-served thing. They didn't have a set release date either.

jon- don't we already have one of those? i forgot what it's called though.
i'm still disappointed that we haven't had more original games along the lines of say, Okami and RE4 from IceCold's list. I just found about "The Conduit", though, which sounds promising.

As for what Retro's doing...they still don't have a permanent Creative Director or Senior Engineer, so I'd suspect that would hold things up there guys.

oh, and pap64 just spelled out why it is i don't pop in here very often anymore ';_)

...true those games themselves do not cost very much. However, it seems like they are what is driving Nintendo's investment in more immersive hardware to begin with. That Nintendo isn't following up it hardware investment with more games (not non-games) to showcase the hardware is telling. Why isn't Nintendo making "Shawn White Snowboarding"?

...Honestly though, I've basically come to terms with Nintendo mostly ignoring the old-style gaming it championed in the N64 years and earlier. That's why I'm happy my bros got a 360 last year, so I'm not totally out in the cold. I'm holding out for the $299 PS3 to round out the deal.

So I decided to stop by here to hear some reactions to the underwhelming press conference yesterday.

...honestly, I don't see how more people here aren't agreeing with Ian, this being a 'gaming' site. I understand if y'all drank the Nintendo Kool-Aid in the past, especially during the GameCube years, but honestly, I don't understand why people keep making excuses for this company.

The idea that Nintendo doesn't have enough resources to commit to everyone is laughable. They are the only hardware manufacturer making money right now, and serious amounts of it. Making an epic game on Wii should be a MUCH easier sell resources-wise than for other systems because people have basically been familiar with the hardware for a generation! Wasn't this one of Nintendo's main pitches for not putting gobs of expensive, overheated hardware in the Wii? I don't think it's too much to ask for Nintendo to try to appeal to everyone. Didn't Sony achieve this with the PlayStation and the PS2? If they're going to take the #1 mantle, they should be able to do that, plain and simple. They have the money, and what's more, they could further marginalize Microsoft and Sony by at least deigning to compete on their turfs. There is no reason why Nintendo cannot fund and promote a BioShock-style experience. And it's not like the games won't sell, guys...

FULL DISCLOSURE: I own 333.000 shares of NTDOY, and am looking forward to my $1.21/share dividend next week. So by definition, I actually have more of a stake in Nintendo's monetary success than most of the people here who drank the Kool-Aid and speak so often about Nintendo having to stay afloat when they're so well ahead of the game they could afford to take some 'risks'. (Really non-risks since these are the sorts of games that have traditionally sold well anyway.)

This is an unfathomable decision:

Check out these enhancements to the Photo Channel, which will be available in December, 2007.
Quote

Personalize your Wii Menu by making one of your favorite digital images from an SD memory card as the Photo Channel icon.
Consumers with MP3 compatible Photo Channels will have the option of updating their Photo Channel to version 1.1, which replaces MP3 compatibility with the ability to play AAC files. AAC files provide a greater sound quality than an MP3 of the same size. This new compatibility will work with MP4 audio files in the .m4a format. Additionally, you can now choose to have the songs play back in a random order.

*Wii consoles sold in retail stores starting in December 2007 should include AAC file support.

*Starting in early December 2007, Wii Console owners who do not have AAC file compatibility will have the option of updating their Photo Channel to version 1.1 by downloading the new version from the Wii Shop Channel. Please note that once the Photo Channel has been updated to version 1.1, the channel will no longer be able to play MP3 format music files. Wii games that currently have features which use MP3 music files will continue to use the MP3 file format. These Wii games will not be compatible with the AAC files.

Additionally, consumers who purchase a Wii console with the updated Photo Channel (ver. 1.1) already installed will not be able to install the previous version to support MP3 playback.

Um, wtf Nintendo? When getting so many other things so right, why do they insist on messing up no-brainers like this? This will cripple older older game titles (e.g. Excite Truck soundtracks won't work now!) as well, so this really makes no sense to me...Nobody should have to transcode their music just to play it on the Wii. (I really hope this isn't the beginning of an apple deal...)

I like nano...but so far at my uni,  I haven't really used command-line tools or a UNIX shell (just plain old JCreator).
I suspect that'll change soon as I'm gonna do a bunch of C and x86 assembler this fall, not Java so much.
...I've never heard of a uni using DOS though...is the CompSci department small? Maybe that'll explain reluctance to upgrade (that still baffles me though)

Ha...I figured I'd catch the late show at 11:30, but even that was sold out of course (opening night, forgot). I ended watching Chuck and Larry, which wasn't the disaster I thought that'd be either

Hahaha...I've actually owned this stock since mid April, and since then it's gone up 66%! (In 3 months, that's pretty damn impressive)
Whoever had the good sense to get in right before E3 '06 with enough cash could probably retire early now (I don't have that kinda money, just stuff I've saved up/gifts/etc.)

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Do you regret getting RE 4 on Cube?
« on: July 15, 2007, 07:09:44 AM »
...I don't regret getting RE4 on Cube one bit (got it for ~$25 used a couple months before the price break) I finally tracked down a copy of Wiivil at an eb the other day, as a sort of pick-me-up after the job I was supposed to get for the rest of the summer fell through. Needless to say it was a great way to blow off steam.

X-Men 3 was a travesty; Bruce Ratner should stick to Rush Hour. Only way I'd wanna see another X-Men movie is if they get the Bryan Singer/David Hayter team back on board.
As for Spiderman 3...dying to see it, though I've heard it's underwhelmed...I hope it worked out for Mr. $143

Honestly, this makes no difference to me. If they move a development team here, it'd be a lot more noteworthy. What would the marketing dept. bring to NYC or SanFran, other than a bunch of execs?

Hmm...well Peter can't be that owned. It may well be possible that Sylar won't be able to figure out how Peter ticks because he's so different., and we also know that he's obviously not going to die here... I'm lovin' the grandma and Missy Peregrym's character - really hot and really bitchy. I'm also disappointed by Lindermann's appearance a tad. Otherwise though, I'm looking forward to finding out how the season wraps up...

Yes, linderman is an actual person; he's going to be played by Malcolm McDowell a.k.a. Alex DeLarge in 'A Clockwork Orange'....I really hope he's the evil bastard I'm expecting him to be; the man seems to have a hand in everything, godfather style

...and don't give me crap about Javits being too small and expensive

It needs *a lot* of work: fixing the stupid sloping screen, fixing the scrolling to be more wii news style. Have a url bar in the corner, add tabs, add better jvm/flash support, better/faster page loads...and that's just the tip of the iceberg; there's a lot more that could be done here...

I just started watching this show a couple days ago. It is insane; I've already caught up to this weeks ep. I love how we're basically watching a comic book in motion, and it's amazing that the show is actually popular nonetheless. Of course, almost all the powers are stolen from the Xmen/earlier shows. Still, there's a different emphasis here that makes the show appealing, I can't figure out what it is.

Anyone else psyched for Linderman next week?

Wow...the news channel is pretty slick, but they have to parse the news items correctly. News about a basketball game in Athens, GA turns up as a news item in Athens, Greece ;]

Sorry, invalid argument. No reason that one level/stage demos - at least - are impossible so that the two or three programmers that Nintendo spared to 'port' the game don't starve...

Now I'm really sorry I brought it up...there's enough political bs on the Internet; it doesn't need to spill over into PGC. Really, I'm shocked it stayed civil this long, kudos.

That said, maybe we should steer this thread back on to discussion about how good/bad this implementation is. Did/can anyone actually try it?
