Nintendo Gaming / Re: Animal Crossing 3DS
« on: June 08, 2011, 04:21:46 PM »
It's really weird watching the trailer for the new game and feeling nothing.  I wanted to get excited but I couldn't.  Animal Crossing is one of my all time favorite franchises but if they don't give us something new I just won't be able to play it any more.  That said, I think the online component might be the key.  I'm not sure what exactly I'm expecting, but so far Nintendo seems to be on the right track with 3DS internet connectivity.

Also, it's nice that the 3D screen finally forced them to get the interface right.  When I first imagine Animal Crossing on the DS I rejoiced that I could have the menu constantly displayed on the bottom screen, but instead I got the game on the bottom and the freaking sky on the top.  Glad to see that's changed!

TalkBack / Re: Pikmin Coming to Wii U
« on: June 08, 2011, 04:06:11 PM »
I remember suggesting this a loooong time ago, but I want Pikmin 3 to be more like Zelda.  I want a large, open game world with multiple environments.  Collecting ship parts (or whatever) would involve travelling to different areas and using Pikmin not only to battle, but to solve puzzles and explore.  The different types pikmin lend themselves perfectly to some clever puzzles and fun boss battles.  It could still incorporate every element of the previous titles but expand on the concept so much more.  I didn't explain that very elegantly but I think you get the point :P

This is my favorite version of Mario Kart.  I know that's an unpopular opinion but I had outrageous amounts of fun with this game.  Then one day I lost it on a boat, so it's probably in the ocean somewhere.  Free copy for those who wish to search the ocean for it!  I'll give you a hint: Atlantic.

This better come to the 3DS e-Shop or someone will suffer.

My "scratches" just wiped right off. It's still a little concerning but before you freak out and send your system back like the guy on neogaf, try cleaning your screen...

I hope they bring back stoned M. Night, E3 just isn't the same without him.

I like the old 3DS better.

I think some people will want to grab a new Lite just to always have a good working unit of the best-built gaming hardware ever.

But what will they do when both shoulder buttons stop working?

I SM64 you were given an open level and could usually find most of the stars no matter which you chose at the level select screen.  In Galaxy you really only tried to find that one star, and the level would often change significantly depending on your choice.  A combination of Galaxy-inspired environments with SM64-styled discovery would be pretty awesome.

I'll wait for the Steam sale.

Finally got 100% in Free Flight, the last ones for me were gold rings out in the middle of nowhere over the ocean.  Wish there was more of a reward to completing it though...

The Master Quest is an unlockable? Stupid.  I've played this game already, why do I need to play it AGAIN just for the opportunity to play it AGAIN AGAIN?  I want to play the master quest but I'll be tired of OoT by the time I get to it.

I'm not sure, but I think I read that when you play through it again it will indicate in some way which options you have and haven't chosen.  I just finished one play through (and got what I think is one of the worst endings...) but have yet to start the second.

Overall I didn't find the game nearly as gripping or atmospheric as others have.  The tedious explanations and rambling side conversations really killed any sense of urgency in the game.  The story is pretty interesting and my ending was certainly vague enough that I'll want to go through it again, but overall it didn't quite live up to the hype.

The reward for getting three stars in every mission is like a kick in the face for fans of the series.

I've got all locations, all balloons, and all trophies. I have one more stunt ring and two more gold rings left to find...and it's driving me crazy. Yet somehow I'm not bored with it, and I'm not usually a completionist.

It's been strange and inconsistent so far, at least as far as ghosting is concerned.  While I find that seeing the 3D has become easier, the effect of ghosting has gone up.  When I first played Pilotwings I got no ghosting at all and everything looked great.  Then when I played Rayman I got severe ghosting during the cut scenes but none during game play.  Now I get it on certain objects in both games, but only some of the time; other times it looks great.

Remember each Imagine game counts as its own title, so that just about fills out the rest of the list...

I tried out Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story on my 3DS and thought it looked great.  A little blurry, but nothing to cry about.  It's a higher resolution screen and they gave us the option of scaling it up or playing at the original resolution; what more could you ask for?  Some people...*grumbles*

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Favorite 3DS Launch Game so far...
« on: March 30, 2011, 11:47:05 PM »
I have Pilotwings and Rayman and like them both.  The ghosting during the cutscene in Rayman is pretty annoying and there are some audio issues, but other than that I like it.  It seems like the game was made for 3D all along, it's just a perfect fit.  Pilotwings is also very fun, though I still wish there were more areas.

So because I pre-ordered my system and Pilotwings on amazon I can pick up another launch title for $5...but honestly they all look terrible.

I'm not that into fighting games but SSF4 is obviously the biggest launch title and might be pretty fun.  Ridge Racer has also been getting good reviews and is said to really benefit from the 3D makeover, but I never end up playing racing games as much as I intend to.  Rayman 3D is also tempting because I played Rayman 2 on the N64 and loved it (and never beat it) but I also have a hard time supporting such a lazy launch title....then again, it's effectively only $5.

SOMEBODY MAKE THIS DECISION FOR ME.

So according to the linked page I have to wait to receive my credit until after the system ships...so I won't get to apply my credit on the game I've already pre-ordered? I have to wait to buy it?

Edit: According to Mashesh from Amazon.com the credit can only be applied after the system ships but it can be used for any video game sold by amazon.  This is NOT what the site says, but if they screw me then IT WILL COST MASHESH HIS JOB.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: I played the 3DS today - who wants to touch me?
« on: March 24, 2011, 05:36:25 PM »
I finally played one at Best Buy today (my superhuman strength let me pick it up!)

It's...interesting.  I guess I'll go with a pros and cons approach here, ignoring things I couldnt experience like battery life:

Pros:
-the 3D worked for me immediately
-the 3D slider is a stoke of genius...pilotwings with 3D set to max could probably kill a child, but around 30-40% was magic.
-the circle pad felt fantastic
-the start/home/select buttons felt fine to me (not really a pro, but certainly not a con)
-graphics were pretty tight for a launch title, I think people are forgetting how bad some DS games looked

Cons:
-low resolution screen.  This normally isn't something that would bother me but after playing with my gen 4 iPod touch for so long the 3DS looked kinda jaggy.  Like they forgot the AA.
-the 3D looked a little funky, but I remember thinking the same thing about Avatar for about 20 minutes before my brain got used to it and learned to love it.  not a really con I guess.  whatever.
-the sweet spot is a con only because game that require the gyroscope pretty much cant have 3D enabled...the sweet spot is very small, but at the same time pretty natural and easy to maintain.

Overall...I'll keep my preorder, but mostly because it's the next Ninty handheld and I want the software.

TalkBack / Re: Reggie Fils-Aime on the Garage Developer
« on: March 24, 2011, 01:53:58 PM »
Nintendo wants to keep games prices high, which means they don't want little 99 cent indie game experiments on their system.  The problem is I'm not going to stop buying those 99 cent games.  I'm still going to shell out premium prices for first party Nintendo titles but now instead of wasting money on a $30 throwaway game for my 3DS in between big releases I'm just going to download some cheap time waster for my iPod.

So the biggest problem is for third party developers.  Nintendo is trying to comfort third parties by telling them that they still have a home on Nintendo consoles.  Unfortunately most people own a console in a addition to an ipod or smartphone and those devices are only going to get more and more popular.  In my mind Nintendo (and MS and Sony, for that matter) should embrace the stupid little throwaway games and let third parties deal with it.  In the end the market will dictate the types of games that it wants, and I think there will be room for all sorts of different price points.

I think the best solution is to move away from the tradition of releasing every game on a console at the same price....right now it's $60 for an Xbox/PS3 games, $50 for a Wii game, $40 for a 3DS game, etc.  Occasionally budget titles show up, but even those are all the same price ($30). The App Store and Steam have taught us that lowering the price of games in general and providing a continuous spread of prices from $1 to $50 is the best sales model.

Wow I've gotten off topic.  IN CONCLUSION, Nintendo should support garage developers that sell 99 cent games, independent devs that can charge $5-20, and premium devs that can charge $20-40.  There is room in the market for all of them.

TalkBack / Re: Pilotwings Resort Review
« on: March 22, 2011, 01:22:43 AM »
It's not really the length of the game that bothers me as much as the scope.  Pilotwings only had around twelve missions but they were spread out over multiple areas and as you progressed you unlocked different vehicles that completely changed the way the game was played.  The birdman, cannon, skydiving, and...jump boot things...were all completely different game modes that added a lot of value even if they were "extras."

So yeah, Pilotwings Resort might actually be longer because it has twice as many missions and a free flight mode with actual goals, but they still limit you to one area (WHICH WE'VE ALREADY EXPLORED) and no extra game play options.

I guess I was a bit harsh earlier but I'm still pretty upset at the missed opportunity.  But I shouldn't complain about what could have been and instead enjoy the game as it is.  I know I'll have fun with it but at the back of my mind I'll always wish there was more.

This is the only launch game I am even remotely interested in and it's so fucking lazy that it might just make me cancel my pre-order.  I'm sure it's fun enough but there doesn't seem to be a lot of content and the whole thing takes place on the same stupid island that I already explored in Wii Sports Resort.  And they want $40 for this?  They started with Pilotwings 64, took out half the vehicles, all but one of the islands, and every last bit of the charm.

So much potential, such little effort.
