Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U Sales Rank Up 875% on Amazon UK
« on: May 24, 2013, 01:14:03 PM »
Using percentages to describe changes in rank is meaningless.  Ranking is an ordering system, not a quantity, and to compare a change in position just doesn't make sense - it's like saying Nintendo has 875% more "ranks" than before.

I could understand if they had chosen to describe the change as moving from one percentile of the total set to another, but that's not how it's being presented.

With respect to cause for the sales increase, I don't have an opinion.  It's only a single data point so it's tough to say what the cause behind it is.  But the math part just really annoys me.

Every console game MUST have a steady stream of DLC because, otherwise, guess what? It becomes traded in, or it’s just rented.
Or you could provide more replay value in your games.  People will hold on to their games if they know they'll be revisiting them in the future.  Artificially stretching out demand for your game through DLC will only reduce the initial value of your product, which could be maximized by actually aiming to create a "classic".

Remember, if everyone bought their games used there would be no more games.
Can't have a used sale without having an original new sale.  The onus isn't on consumers to support the game industry, the onus is on companies to make products which actually resonate with consumers.  This industry is ultimately going to continue destroying itself until it starts shifting the blame for their woes from their consumers to themselves.

I'm going to disagree with the majority, in that I agree with Nintendo's reluctance to show future titles.  First, it keeps the competition guessing as to your strategy.  But more importantly, it allows Nintendo to go all out next E3, stealing the attention away from Sony and Microsoft's next consoles.  Timing is as important as the nature of your news.  Could Nintendo have shown one major game to create a positive impression?  Sure, (and I don't think Pikmin 3 was this game) but I think having mostly tech demos to stimulate the imagination of your audience is sufficient for now.  The whole point is to not be forgotten next year when the competition increases.

The forumers at Penny Arcade are remarking that E3 isn't for "us" anymore with all the non-game and casual stuff that's focused on.  But then who is E3 aimed at?  Because the people excited about Usher being in Dance Central are sure as **** not paying attention to E3, or even know what it is.  They spend so much time on casual stuff at E3 but the casuals aren't there.  Reveal the casual stuff for like the Teen Choice Awards or some nonsense like that.  The geeks are the only ones that are ever going to pay attention to E3 so stick to the core stuff.
I have a feeling this is what Nintendo was trying to do yesterday with their video.  I'm predicting their E3 presentation will be more tailored to the actual audience.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Patents New Circle Pad Design
« on: May 18, 2012, 01:25:46 AM »
I find this somewhat interesting because based on a lecture by a patent lawyer I attended earlier this year, this 'invention' would not be patentable.  The lawyer explained that for an invention to be patentable, it must satisfy two requirements: 1) be new; 2) be novel.  In this case, the concentric rings aren't new because Nintendo already used this with the GameCube controller.

Could anyone a little more knowledgeable explain what I might be misunderstanding?

Mario doesn't even seem like it's made by a Japanese company, it's the one game that can truly be called a worldwide phenomenon.
Well since there's never been a game just called Mario, I guess we don't know for sure.  Mario as a franchise, is platforming, racing, sports, fighting and board games/mini games all together.  So which aspect of Mario is the one you are referring to here?
You've never played Mario?

...not trying to be a dick, but in Nintendo's heyday it was common to "play Mario".  And I agree that Mario seems to transcend culture.

General Gaming / Re: "Hardcore", "mature", "casual", "kiddy"
« on: April 25, 2012, 03:45:19 PM »
Strictly, no, I don't think they mean the same thing.  However, the sentiment behind them is typically the same.  Almost always their usage comes from a sense of elitism, with one term indicating a superior game (mature, hardcore), and the other indicating an inferior game (kiddy, casual).  If people were able to remove these judgments from the discussion, then I think I'd be able to treat these terms with respect.  To be honest, I've always felt that most 'casual' games are what we used to call 'arcade' type games.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2
« on: April 22, 2012, 11:26:48 PM »
What I'm wondering is why do so many people dislike the New Super Mario Bros. games? The art style isn't that bad. They basically took the 2D art and revamped it with 3D-ish models.

And the gameplay is exactly the same as any 2D Mario game. You run and jump through colorful levels, collecting coins, stomping baddies, etc.

I still play NSMB Wii and NSMB DS often, and I love revisiting my favorite levels time and time again.
I love 2D Mario, but I agree that the art style is a weak point.  It's not that it's terrible, it's just that it looks like that they didn't put much effort into it; it was an afterthought.  Compare that with the Galaxy games where serious work was clearly put into the graphics.  Why can't NSMB be treated with the same care?  Again, I'll always prefer 2D over 3D Mario, but I'd appreciate it if the team developing it showed at least some enthusiasm.

This may be gibberish from Google Translate, but I think it said UE4 is being demonstrated on Wii U

Since the opening of GDC Monday morning is the Nintendo Wii U which is usually in the middle of conversations, notes the media monitoring agency Clara, which closely follows the conference in order to award the main trends . "Of all the subjects analyzed, and what are the next Nintendo Wii that generate the most interest of the people attending the conference," the agency noted in a statement. Nintendo has already released details of the U Wii, but what are some developers who should be a little more in the coming days, while the studio Epic Games provides a demonstration of its next generation of game technology Unreal Engine 4 is designed for this new

It says that "Epic is expected to demonstrate its next generation Unreal Engine 4, conceived for this new platform [Wii U]."  But yeah, it sounds like UE4 is coming to Wii U.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Files for Personal Weather Station Patent
« on: February 28, 2012, 05:34:24 PM »
You know the actor that everyone loves and everyone wants to hear him talk about his most famous roles and yet he can't shut-up about his stupid band that nobody gives a **** about?  Or the musician who talks endlessly about his clothing line?  Sometimes Nintendo is like this.  They're the best videogame designer in the world and yet it often seems that what they really want to talk about is their weather station or weird video network or vitality sensor or software to learn English or whatever goofy ass gadget they've come up with to get grandparents playing videogames.  "Well I guess there is that videogame stuff but what I'm REALLY excited about is our new digital cook book!"  ARRGH!!

I can imagine this introducing realtime weather effects in games which sounds awesome for about three seconds until you realize that when it's a miserable rainy day outside you probably are playing videogames because you can't do anything else.  Do you really want the game to be raining as well?  "I will escape the bad weather by... playing a videogame where I'm stuck in bad weather."
They filed a patent.  That's all...

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Preparing New 2D Mario for 3DS
« on: January 27, 2012, 09:17:34 PM »
I will never say no to another 2d Mario.  They are simply fundamental to gaming.  Ideally each new console would launch with one.

That said, I hope a little more polish goes into these games, as opposed to the two NSMB games.  I didn't mind the backgrounds, but the character models looked like they could be dated to the N64 era.

In the case of Skyward Sword it's tracking pretty similar to what Twilight Princess did when it was released, so Skyward Sword could at least be able to hit the 500k mark.  Of course I wonder if because of Motion+ controls the game be too complicated for the Japanese audience which could hurt it's word of mouth.  3D Mario games sell less than 2D Mario because jumping around in a 3D environment with a joystick is considered too much for the Japanese, so I imagine having to move Link around in 3D and while swinging the Wiimote from different angles just to fight basic enemies is going to be a nightmare for a lot of them.
I'm not sure that Japanese gamers feel that jumping around in 3D is too much, could it be that those games just don't appeal to them like the 2D ones?  I mean, Nintendo's done plenty in the last couple 3D games making them "friendlier", without any noticeable response.

As for SS, I don't know what could be considered complicated about the controls.  Swinging the wiimote is pretty intuitive, and doesn't require any explanation...

General Chat / Re: Space News

Space isn't cold.  It's just mostly empty.  Not the same thing.  Being in a vacuum means no convection, which essentially means no cooling at all.
Space is cold!  Regardless of medium, you will still radiate away almost all of your thermal energy.  In fact, one scientist from the Canadian Space Agency told me yesterday that their tests showed that a particular Earth-orbiting satellite's temperature will stabilize at 188K (I think that was the number he quoted).  The further away you are from the planet, the less reflected light you'll see, meaning even more cooling.

For us Canadians, I noticed that walmart.ca is selling the 3DS at $198, both colours.  Not sure if there will be an intentional delay on them shipping the item, but it's currently listed as "in stock".

I noticed he didn't once mention "games" as a reason for why a system would be successful.  That's, in my opinion, more embarrassing than calling the DS a babysitting device.

Wait, you PS3 owners, did you actually buy your system for the hard-drive?  Maybe I'm the one who's out of touch...

I wonder how much battery life plays into this given how the tsunami in Japan has damaged the power grid, maybe steering people towards buying stuff that won't shut down after 2-3 hours?
Is there even a remote possibility that you're over-analyzing the situation?

Either way it wouldn't matter.  The world spends money at a rate much faster than any coin block could produce.

*Shakes head*  :(

I really wish Nintendo would simply not give Ubisoft dev kits. Just refuse them no matter what they say they want to put on a Nintendo system. They might present a handful of titles on a system that are decent but they put out far to much crap. Now if they want to waste the money that's okay. However their crap makes it worse for everyone else. It turns off casual buyers as they are more likely to pick up one of their games for themselves or their kids. Their games take away shelf space from more worthwhile games. Their games end up being copied by shovelware developers just taking away even more shelf space. I think Nintendo systems would be far better off if Ubisoft was somehow blacklisted.
Were the previous games really that bad?  I never read any reviews on them since they don't appeal to me, perhaps you could share some insights?

I think the point about Wii being a 'legacy' console is being missed.  It's not a direct comparison to PS2, as in it's from the same generation as PS2 (in any sense).  What it implies is that once it's successor is released, it will continue to sell well - like the PS2 did after the PS3 was released.

22
Didn't they admit that they priced the system based on the reaction at last year's E3?  Or that they at least factored it in?

They are the exact same game, what difference does it make how long the time between releases is?

If they are indeed the same exact game then Nintendo is ripping people off by forcing them to buy the same game over and over.
Forcing?
There's a sh*t-load of nicotine in SMB.  Don't you remember the US government doing anything they could to eliminate Nintendo during the NES years?

On a side note, I'm curious whether anyone believes people will still be buying re-releases of Black Ops, 20 years from now.  Kind of makes you think about what makes one game a classic, as compared to something else.

My only advice is to practice as frequently as possible.  In my opinion, it's much more important than getting a proper teacher.
