Nintendo Gaming / GCN advertisements - NOA gets it right

Nintendo - What kind of name is that, anyway? - I'm assuming you mean the European or Australian release dates?

Nintendo Gaming / Official Demo Disc Talk

I want one!  If Nintendo Power started giving out demo discs every few months, they've got my money.

"As for Donkey Kong, EAD is working on the next Donkey Kong game, so don't worry. All I know is that it's a platformer, but I don't know if it will be like the original DK or like Donkey Kong Country. My educated guess says it will be a DKC game (maybe 3D movement like DK64, maybe 2D movement like SNES games, who knows?). Miyamoto did say it will be "3D meets 2D", so I'm hoping it will actually be Donkey Kong Country 4...
And since the original DKC games were my favorite platforms and had about 100 levels each...This could be Kongasm! Imagine...200 or more 3D rendered levels of smoothly animated DKC gameplay, with new moves (I hope you can punch this time like in DK64) and animals and stuff! *Gamefreak goes giddy with anticipation*"

I need this game.  The DKC games were *excellent* (some of Rare's best work) and I'd love a new version with the same fast-paced, atmospheric gameplay... I just hope they can have music somewhere near as brilliant as the originals.  *suddenly has urge to  listen to Bramble Scramble or the haunted woods music from DKC2*

Nintendo Gaming / super smash bros melee talk

I don't really like Marth or Roy, not because they're bad characters, but because they're not that much fun to play, at least for me.  They don't have as much variety in their moves.  I like Link and Samus, mostly...  Bowser and Peach are good.  Fox is good, but I'm terrible at him (he's too fast for me).

Nintendo Gaming / 2D needs to make a come back...
« on: May 31, 2003, 07:19:53 AM »
I think there's a place for both 2D and 3D.  For example, Viewtiful Joe (though I haven't played it) certainly sounds like a game that would work much better in 2D.  The 2D allows for simpler directional controls and more complicated things like slow-motion effects and stuff at the same time (I also think The Matrix would work great in 2D).  Games like Zelda, however, I think are destined for 3D.  Though I loved LTTP, it simply can't capture the feeling of exploration as peering over a cliff to see a huge landscape before you with water stretching to the horizon... it just isn't the same in 2D.

"same with the Donkey Kong Country series AWSOME 2d series, donkey kong 64 well.. i didn't even finnish it."

I agree, but I think a *good* Donkey Kong game could be done in 3D.  Just cut out the collecting, and do it in a style more similar to Rayman 2.  Keep the flashy, fast-paced experience of the DKC games.  It's rather sad that almost all 3D platformers have been rather slow-paced and based on collecting things since Mario 64.

General Chat / Super Mario, a communist?

Haha, that link is hilarious.  I never thought about the red star thing.  And, oh yeah, Mario looks a LOT like Stalin... I mean, despite his head being perhaps 10 by 10 pixels, he has a mustache.

I like online games, but not really racing, so I don't care.

Wow, before I read your post, Paladin, I was about to put another LucasArts adventure game.

Game:  Curse of Monkey Island
System: PC

This game is a great, mind-boggling cartoon-styled adventure game.  The game's plot is that you are a rather bumblingly innocent pirate named Guybrush Threepwood (I defy you to come up with a better name than that) and you must save your girlfriend from a curse that you accidentally put on her. Many of the puzzles are quite clever (often funny in themselves) and the characters are unforgettable.  The conversations (which are all voiced) are often long, but you will begin to feel a compelling need to see all possible branches of the conversation.  The lemonade kid, the beach snob, the barbers,... all hilarious.  Simply looking at everything is often very entertaining, as there may be dozens of items in a room.  The game's a classic that can't be missed if you're interested in traditional adventure games on the PC.

Nintendo Gaming / New Zelda Look 2
« on: March 03, 2003, 07:30:48 PM »
This is a continuation of the thread that was locked:  http://www.planetgamecube.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=3&threadid=1695

I just had to reply to a post I read by Shocking Albert, showing the changing styles of Link.  These changes *were* due to technical design issues, not graphical style.  The original Link had to be able to stay in a tiny square.  Also, as it had a bird's-eye perspective, no other design would really have been possible.  In a side-scroller, however, you can see the whole height of Link's body, as opposed just a head and shoulders (oddly enough, you can actually see that Link walks in a weird sideways manner in the original so that you could see more than that despite the perspective.)  So, obviously, Link's body in LTTP is more of an SD-style to once-more reflect the camera angle.  This can also be seen in the different angles of Zelda II.  The artwork in these three games is similar.

Nintendo Gaming / Animal Crossing, what's soo good about the game?
« on: March 01, 2003, 04:58:48 PM »
Animal Crossing is one of those games you either like or you don't.  If you've read good reviews and can't identify them, you probably won't like this game.  And don't listen to crazy people -  one person liking this game does not mean everyone will!

Nintendo Gaming / Metal Gear Solid Discussion
« on: February 28, 2003, 07:19:56 PM »
Wow, a remake of the NES game would be great!  It'd basically be an entirely new game - it would give you a chance to really see the plot as it was meant to be seen.  I never thought of that.  I think maybe one "I feel asleep" should be made as a homage, but that's about it.

Nintendo Gaming / Metal Gear Solid Discussion
« on: February 28, 2003, 05:21:57 AM »
This is cool.  I just hope it's a new game or at least a MGS2 port instead of a MGS remake.  Metal Gear Solid was a fun game, but I already beat it.  I want something new.

Anyway, I'd have to agree that both Watership Down and Fahrenheit 451 are *excellent* books.  I love Ray Bradbury's surreal style and Richard Adams's  great sense of legend.  I never read A Wrinkle In Time, though.

Nintendo Gaming / Modern GameCube games Need Difficulty Settings
« on: February 25, 2003, 07:07:00 PM »
"Why don't modern games have this? For example, Zelda: Wind Waker could have an option to start with 1 heart instead of 3 to increase difficulty.... "

This is easy enough - just skip the first two hearts, it comes to the same thing.  Ever try to beat OoT with only three hearts?  It's hard.  But, actually, the fun in Zelda doesn't come from its difficulty in action, but it's difficulty in puzzles.  Action in Zelda games is, to me at least, basically a diversion.  Puzzles are much, much harder to change the difficulty of.

I think the reason games are easier today is because of a simple save system - you can try as many times as you want to beat that last boss.  It's easier, yes, but it's much less frustrating, and it's pretty redundant to go and play back through an entire game.

Also, as it's been mentioned, the difficulty in older games was often fairly cheap - one-hit kills, no saves, faster enemies.  I think the difficulty in modern games is more meaningful, with games like Perfect Dark (still can't beat all the PA levels...)

Nintendo Gaming / PIKMIN 2 screens (and kirbys air ride screens)
« on: February 25, 2003, 06:52:49 PM »
I can't wait for Pikmin 2.  I *loved* the original Pikmin, but it was too short.  If this game is long enough to be worth it, I'd gladly put down $50.

Multiplayer should be very interesting.  Personally, I'm hoping for something similar to the multiplayer of Zelda on GBA, from what I've heard of it.  It would work great with Pikmin, it would fit the style perfectly.  I just hope they go easy on the puzzles - the last stage of Pikmin seemed a bit too much like Zelda for me - too obviously designed as a puzzle - it didn't have that natural wildlife feel that the rest of the game was so brilliant at.

We need more PC games on this list.

Game:  StarCraft
System:  PC
Release: 1998?

StarCraft was my first real-time strategy game.  It is utterly addictive.  Although I am terrible at multiplayer, I can see its genius.  There are so many ways to play this game, so many tricks are possible.  The campaign editor is very, very powerful and versatile.  Watching huge battles taking place is fun.  The only problem with this game is that it seems too often I end up simply building two dozen Protoss Carriers (huge warship that launches little fighters) and kill everything, which isn't as interesting as using a balanced force.  But maybe that's more my fault than the game's.

Game:  Super Mario Bros.
System:  NES

Super Mario Bros. is the game that started it all.  Sure, Mario first appeared in Donkey Kong, but SMB gave Mario so many of its long-lasting features, such as pipes, mushrooms, fireflowers and lava.  When you think about it, SMB truly was a bizarre game - you were a plumber, who could become a Super Plumber and even throw fireballs, and your goal was to jump over gaps and onto platforms while killing turtles and evil mushrooms until you save a princess.  However, the game constantly tricks you - each time you defeat Bowser, you find some idiot mushroom instead of the real princess.  Eventually, you make it to the impossibly hard eighth world and save the Princess, only to have her happily tell you that you can do it all over again, if you wish, on a harder mode.  But aside from all that, SMB was (and is) great fun.  The controls are classic Mario - slippery and very fast.  There are lots of secrets to find everywhere, despite the fact that the game is totally linear.  The game's music has been repeated so many times that it is rather surprising that our ears have not yet melted into a steaming puddle of flesh - indeed, it is still catchy and brilliant when heard in the latest game in the series, Super Mario Sunshine.

Nintendo Gaming / Do you think Majora's Mask deserves a special edition?
« on: February 19, 2003, 05:58:50 PM »
It doesn't matter whether it deserves it or not - it only matters if it will make a profit.  Frankly, I very much doubt it - I mean, why do you think they are giving away Master Quest for free?  I don't think anybody bought it - it's just a very small expansion pack.

Nintendo Gaming / Advice on which racer to purchase

If you don't already have it, Wave Race: Blue Storm.  This game is awesome - the only problem is, it's a bit short (same size as the N64 version, I'm afraid)

Nintendo Gaming / Thinking about getting a GC
« on: February 19, 2003, 02:26:52 PM »
No, you don't.  I don't remember where, but I read somewhere that you don't.  That'd be dumb on Nintendo's part.  Basically, they lowered the price on the Mario bundle to $159.99 so that you're pretty much getting Super Mario Sunshine *as* your free game (along with a guide and memory card), and that's why SMS isn't on the list along with the other free games with a GC.

Nintendo Gaming / Marionette
« on: February 16, 2003, 08:58:20 PM »
"you sure it wasn't spelled like the marionette dolls or puppets. Those types of games are big in japan, where you control a character and teach it emotions and such. Or maybe i am wayyyy of and it is gonna be a bizzare Mario game. "

Er, what?  Why would you teach a marionette emotions and stuff?  You confuse me.

Anyway, yes, this is going to be a puppet game.  Personally, I think it's an awesome idea.  If you don't know, marionettes are puppets controlled by strings from above the stage.  The controls would be vastly different from normal games, but would allow for a great amount of freedom with the right physics.  Maybe it could be a fighting game, or a dancing game.

Nintendo Gaming / The new Pokemon Game for GCN

Real-time 3D battles.  Environmental effects.  No random battles if possible.  Zelda-style controls outside of battle.  National championships w/ real (cash) prizes.  Lots of breeding effects such as different colors and other slight variations.

Nintendo Gaming / Pokemon MMORPG
« on: February 16, 2003, 08:43:48 PM »
Eh, I'd prefer not to have the microphone...  I would find it annoying to hear all these voices of random people chatting.  I'd also prefer to order Pokemon using options (though, admittedly, some other options like dodge or dash would be nice).  It would be very cool to see Pokemon react in real-time to your orders, instead of following them out the next turn as if you were controlling their every movement.
