Nintendo Gaming / Will the next Switch iteration have 3DS bc?
« on: June 08, 2017, 05:30:29 PM »
The 3DS is still selling well and with it's latest version, the new 2DS, I expect those sales to continue for a couple more years.

In a couple years, the Switch could be due for a slight upgrade; mainly to make it more portable, ie better battery life, and maybe an updated look. If they make it more portable, however, this really could impede on their 3DS sales and instead of updating that handheld to its next generation, it seems highly likely that they'd combine systems, especially if the Switch sells as well as it has for two years straight.

So what I'm asking, are they likely to provide backwards compatibility to the Switch or simply drop it?

Nintendo Gaming / Is Snipper Clips a killer app?

This game will tell you more about a person in five minutes than a three hour conversation.

This leads me to believe that developers see the Switch as a 3DS successor, which makes me believe that so does Nintendo, which will likely release Pokemon for the console - instantly making the Switch a success.

NWR Forums Discord / Who has predicted it right?
« on: May 18, 2016, 07:11:17 AM »
It's been a long time for some of us on this forum and I'm wondering who has predicted what Nintendo would do the most?

Let's keep this short and expand on it later by starting with just the consoles and handhelds system features. Go ahead and post your own predictions or make fun of someone else's.

Nintendo Gaming / Not a hater but...is BotW gonna suck?
« on: February 12, 2016, 08:59:36 PM »
I mean...

It's Zelda, so odds are against it. Even so, there's a very real chance it could be pretty terrible.

We all don't like to admit it, but the jumping off horse back and aiming with the entire gamepad looked pretty shitty. It looked like Max Payne, which was amazing, but more discombobulated.

Is the game beautiful? Most definitely. They blended the best aspects of TP, SS, and WW into one delicious feast for the eyes.

Is the game huge? It truly feels like it. But so did TP's world and WW's world and they both left us feeling a bit ripped off in terms of things to do.

The only thing I'm hyped about truly, fucking truly, is the fact that this game is the first HD Zelda. I'm not talking about just the graphics, but the ability to pretty much put any kind of boss or puzzle up on the screen. The limits are broader than ever and with the team this large, this focused after five years of development, it could be the greatest game of all time...again.

Or it could be a complete let down.

General Chat / Programming 101
« on: October 24, 2014, 12:09:39 AM »
I'm learning how to program because like Chinese, it's the language of the future.

Gonna start with xcode so I can mess around building stupid little apps. I was wondering if anyone here programs for a living or as a hobby and would like to share any tips and tricks they've learned along the way. Anything at all would be appreciated.

That said, maybe I should start the discussion about programming in general. What language or software do you use and why?

General Gaming / I am a two year old gamer
« on: January 24, 2014, 09:44:47 PM »
Well let's just say it's very unlikely for me to buy a game that isn't a couple years old. (I gotta have my Fifa afterall)

I realized it with Skyward Sword. I was so hyped for that game, but then I just forgot about it. Life goes on.

Two years later, blankly perusing craigslist, I found it for 5 bucks along with several other games as cheap or cheaper. It was very easy to buy. I played it and I loved it and then I didn't care to play anything else.

In other words, my buying full priced or even half priced games are done. I just don't see myself doing it anymore despite how good a game is. Gaming has taken a backseat in my life except for the few times I get to play some form of drinking game involving a 64 or Fifa.

The upside is that if I do get the itch to play something, all the games I've skipped are right there waiting for me. Even the multiplayer games have their following online so I'm never without the online community either. Hell I still break out the first Modern Warfare (I still think it's the best) and there's plenty of assholes waiting to be shot.

Maybe when things calm down, I'll take more time playing games but as it is right now, I'm a two year old gamer.

Nintendo Gaming / When did consoles become so complicated?
« on: December 08, 2013, 06:29:36 PM »
More to the point, why is it necessary to become so complicated? And do all the features actually improve gaming?

I feel like Online is the trojan horse for all things expendable. Yes there is true value in bringing gamers together to play against one another or together, but simply because the system can go online, does it have to bring every feature an online product can?

Furthermore, innovations in gaming are rare these days. There are very few moments where something actually shocks me in the way its played. Does that dictate that more innovation is needed in how we interact with games? And are developers simply not able to expand genres or create new ones within a confined, traditional control scheme?

Lastly, is it the experience of gaming that has become more complicated or is it the framework behind them? And if either, is there a way to make them simpler or are we forever on a path towards something more complicated?

General Gaming / Is anyone actually buying a Xbone or PS4 at launch? Why?
« on: October 21, 2013, 01:40:45 PM »
So I want to get a feel of how many people are going to buy one of the new systems and why?

Is it the games at launch that interest you or just down the road? Are those games gonna be significantly better than those released for the PS3 and 360?

Is it the networking and online functions that interest you?

The Wii U is selling terribly mostly due to a lack of (compelling) software. Nintendo realizes this, as do their fans. But is there a silver lining to this debacle?

Nintendo is no doubt making all of our favorite franchises for the Wii U; Zelda, Mario, DK, and Metriod will all be on the console at some point. I for one would easily purchase a Wii U to play the next iteration of Zelda, even if the Wii U turns out to be a failure and forever lacks proper support. What can I say? I love Zelda.

But most people aren't like me. Most people won't buy a system for one game.....or will they?

Is the lack of sales the push Nintendo needs to release other games we don't expect? Is the lack of sales the push Nintendo needs to release games the entire industry has always wanted? Is the lack of sales the push Nintendo needs to finally be drastic?

Sales will surely pick up this half of the year with Pikmin, Wonderful 101, Mario World and WiiFit, but an objective look at the situation will tell you it may not be enough.

Nintendo has the greatest backlog of IP's that they could use to stir interest dramatically, but there is only one IP that would make everyone, excuse my french, "Shut the **** up." And that's Pokemon. A fully realized Pokemon with online tournaments and clans.

I feel like Nintendo has been holding onto this ace card for a long time for two reasons: technical limitations and they've been a highly successful company. There was never an actual need to make this kind of game as well as the infrastructure to do so. But now, those two reasons are colliding.

The optimist in me believes they are remaking Wind Waker not only because it is still one of the most beautiful games ever created, but that graphic style may be used again at some point. And what game would look fantastic cell-shaded? Pokemon.

Now I may be wrong (and I probably am), but Nintendo really has to do something unexpected to become relevant again. Making a console with all the usuals and a few fantastic new IPs maybe enough for me and those like me, but not to the rest of the world.

General Chat / Short Moral Stories
« on: May 16, 2013, 10:52:39 AM »
I've been fascinated lately with incredibly short anecdotes that teach a moral lesson. I would like this thread to become a place where we can gather many of them from places such as books, music, and even TV and movies. Here is an example of what I mean:

Envy and Greed, two of the seven deadly sins, were walking down a path one day when they were confronted by an angel. The angel offered one of them everything he could wish for. The other one would receive twice as much. Greed quickly asked Envy to choose first. After a little thought, Envy wished for one blind eye.

NWR Forums Discord / Nintendo should make this game.
« on: April 10, 2013, 04:39:46 PM »
No it's not a pic with a pun or an article that if read sarcastically explains why the gaming industry is up its own ass. Its just a hilarious idea that Nintendo would never make.

Meet Jeb.

Jeb is going to die at some point today. It could be a car accident, it could be falling down the stairs, it could even be an attack by a pack of squirrels. The point is, he is going to die, unless you help him.

You can't actively help him or manipulate him directly. You can only set the parameters for the day. Is it a sunny or rainy day? Will his car start? Does he forget his cellphone? Does he wake up late? And so on. If it's sunny and his car doesn't start, then he'll walk to work...and get attacked by a pack of squirrels. If he wakes up late and it's rainy, he'll drive faster to get to work...and die in a car accident.

There is a way to save his life. A unique combination of factors is all it takes to get Jeb through the day. And onces he's safe, you meet Mary.

General Chat / I have a pretty endearing story.
« on: March 26, 2013, 01:19:05 AM »
And would like anyone of you who likes the idea to help make it real if possible.

The story is about how screens are with us our entire life, from pre-birth to after-death. I don't have the story clear, but I want to show how one lives, grows up and develops a relationship with others, eventually marries, has kids, those kids have kids, then they die and finally their grandkids see media of themselves when they were young. So to give you an example of the first part....

Warning RUN-ON SENTENCE AHEAD.

If you can a imagine a wordless comic or something of that nature showing a picture of a sonogram of a young fetus, the parents cherishing it at home while they decide names, then the newborn pictures being shared via the internet with family and friends, then a camera filming the exploits of a young child, to a toddler watching cartoons, to a 6 year old playing with math on a tablet, then a 10 year old in a computer lab at school, to a teenager adding friends into a new cellphone, to a school dance where girls and boys are looking at their phones split across the dance floor....etc...then finally to a screen in the hands of young child sitting on a mother's lap looking at a picture of their grandparents now deceased.

I can imagine a short animation or comic or even a narrated children's book. I honestly think Pixar could run away with it.

If anyone would like to help at least build a draft of the story and illustrations, let me know.
